Also, when we control the house, senate, and presidency it is still their government somehow!
I think my favorite lib phrase is "razor-thin majority". I saw that or versions of that quite a lot in 2021 to 2022 when I was still bothering to talk to libs on a daily basis.
Incidentally, House Republicans (and even Senators by Dem standards) have one of those right now...
You are a major political party. You govern half of the states and at-risk populations are already moving across the country because they scramble towards a sanctuary. You are well-connected to unions, civil rights groups and other orgs about to get fucked over by the federal government. You regularly recruit tens of thousands of campaigning volunteers. You run the second-largest political fundraising network in the world. A metric fuckton of government employees from all possible backgrounds are about to get fired. The half of the country that isn't gloating over mass deportations may be at the most mobilizable moment in their entire life. And there's millions of people that need protection because they are about to get hit by the seething rage of a fascist government.
So yeah, what could you possibly do?
Don't even get me started on the amount of dirty tricks they could play. The congressional building staff are probably anti-Trump. You could team up with them and fuck with Republicans.
There is no end to my fucking pettiness and you best believe their lives would be fucking hell. That's not even getting into the physical threats and battery that would come next. You can throw lots of sand in the gears. I'll make LBJ cry.
Incredible democracy in which one side has 49% of the vote and yet is reduced to shidding and crying
βwe canβt do anythingβ
Comrade this feels weird, I am not trying to call you out but respectfully I feel your estimates of the popularity of deporting undocumented workers is too high. This is a recent poll shows the base question of βdeporting all undocumented personsβ, while it has a plurality, is only at 43%. I like that AP poll because it asks a number of questions that show Americans are all over the map on this issue. Like, Americans seems to distinguish quite a bit between deporting recent and not recent migrants. Strongly against separating families. Yeah Americans are very very in favor of deporting βviolent criminalsβ but put yourself in the shoes of a typical American trying to answer that question when asked.
I only push back on this because I believe strongly that there is a tremendous opportunity for the left in the US to seize on the opportunity and do the right thing: boldly take a stand for undocumented workers and push for their rights, and I think it will be more popular than most realize.

This is exactly what's playing out in real world organization right now.
yeah, the question gets remarkably different answers depending on how it's asked (naturally) as do trans questions and others. it's really reductive and misleading to just blanket buy that 80% of the country is in absolute lockstep on trump policies and it will lead to strategic errors in organizing for those who are actively involved in it if they don't take advantage of what will clearly be growing unrest because they've resigned themselves to inaction against some nonexistent mandate
in short, communists should not be taking cues from hakeem jefferies
The half of the country that isn't gloating over mass deportations may be at the most mobilizable moment in their entire life.
But the problem is this is just not true. Deportations have between 60-66% approval. So it's not half of the country opposed, it's a third. And of this third, most of them are in a position of defeat and shock, not in a position to fight and mobilise, which is why the resistance to Trump is much more subdued this time round. The very uncomfortable truth is that Trump's policies (and Trump to a certain extent) are just that much more popular than they were eight years ago, and the Democratic party's mandate is not and never has been to stand up for human rights, it's to win elections. When standing up for human rights was popular, the Democratic party was prepared to work with these unions, civil rights groups and NGOs. But this was always a very unhealthy marriage used to launder the Democrat's image. Now that this is unpopular, the Democrats aren't going to waste their political capital on pesky things such as "human rights". These unions, civil rights groups and NGOs sold out for almost nothing in return. Many on the left, as far back as 2008, were warning these groups about the consequences of getting into bed with Democratic party as a shortcut to achieve their goals, but unfortunately not many listened.
Remember when filibuster was the word of the year? Democrats controlled every single branch of government but still couldn't do anything because of the dreaded FILIBUSTER. Republicans never actually did it, of course, they just threatened to and the house trained dogs of a party dems rolled over and submitted like good pets.
But wowee imagine if they even thought of the option.
Letβs cut through the bullshit and say it for what it is:
The Democrats wonβt βresistβ this time because the role of fascism is to discipline labor/voters - here, the goal is to discipline the voters who think they can just sit out of an election because of various reasons like Palestine and refuse to follow the system and vote for Kamala.
Jeffries has already said it as clear as he could have: βwhat can we do? they control the senate, house and presidencyβ = βyou didnβt vote for usβ
Theyβre not going to put up a fight this time, at least not until the voters have been sufficiently disciplined.
In their view, the voters were children throwing tantrum, and so theyβre gonna punish the children by letting them see for themselves βwhat happens when you choose to defy the rules we set and donβt want to let the Adults in the Room to be in charge. letβs see how long youβd lastβ.
If enough voters are scared enough by Trump to start voting for the Democrats again, then the system is merely functioning as intended: fascism as a disciplinary tool.
The Democrats went from starting a civil war because they wanted to keep slavery to whatever the fuck this is. It's almost like there's absolutely nothing redeemable about the Democrats and they should be relegated to the dustbins of history like the NSDAP. At least Republicans have a coolish origin story even if it's completely irrelevant to how they are today.
democrat origins are that they want free money
republican origins are that they hate non-white people (and will use it to get free money)
republicans basically wanted slavery ended because they wanted fewer black people
nothing has changed in 200 years
republicans basically wanted slavery ended because they wanted fewer black people
I really don't think this is accurate. The early Republican party was full of serious radicals looking to restructure society along more just lines. Their party got co-opted (because no demcent Marxism Leninism), but the people who drove the early days of the party were legit and worthy of respect as early fighters for liberation.
sigh
It's amazing how effective are when they need to do ghoulish things
But stopping conservatives? Aw shucks, we can't hold them back (except for all these checks in our system, like shutting down the government by not helping pass the budget)
Well you could always start assassinating republicans if you're so desperate for ideas. Blow up the supreme court. You know, the things you do to people in the global south all the time?
But the norms.
They're waiting to hear back from the parliamentarian if that's allowed or not
organising strikes like in any democracy would be too much trouble
I am once again begging democrats to just crash out.
The GOPβs whole shtick is being in a six decade long temper tantrum over the civil rights act. Now itβs your turn to crash out.
Why can't Biden just shoot Trump before the inauguration and then pardon himself
The Supreme Court already endorsed a scenario where a president could legally send SEALs or something similar to assassinate anyone. As long as it's "official" then it's legal... that's what they said.
It's a really good thing for the world, probably, that I'll never be told I can order a few consequence free SEAL raids. That's practically begging for "testing." You know, "just to see if they'll do it."
He would kill a million people before harming one cell in trumps body
Maybe y'all should have figured that out back when you still had the presidency
They did nothing to "trump proof" the government when they had power. Now he's doing exactly what he did last time and they are still surprised.
But yeah it's entirely the fault of people saying fucking do something or asking is there a plan?
The GOP may be evil but they know how to fight. You wouldn't catch them saying this, the opposition under Obama was constant and laid the foundation for Trump. They didn't let Obama confirm a judge to the SC during his own term
Even when the dems haven't controlled the senate or anything republicans will still say "GOD GAVE US THE SECOND AMENDMENT FOR A REASON, OBAMA IS LITERALLY A DEMON."
Damn if they can't even do anything then maybe none of them should be allowed to hold office ever again, huh?
they are somehow rapidly devolving into whiny bottom opposition. which is crazy, i kind of thought bratty sub opposition was the floor on this thing.
the floor on this thing.
I don't think there is a floor. I think that this year (perhaps just months from now) - Trump will start ignoring all court orders. When court orders are ignored - the US Marshals are brought in to force compliance. The problem is the US Marshals work for Trump's DOJ. So Trump stops being just a president and he becomes a dictator.
If god forbid this happens - the dems will go into quisling mode and I guess they'll beg Daddy Trump for crumbs like allowing elections to continue.
oh yeah i'm not talking about there being a legal floor, of course there isn't. my point isn't that they're an effective opposition at all. it's that i didn't think they'd just completely give up on the #resist aesthetic quite so immediately
You could listen to what people actually want and lead.
I like how the entire dem establishment is fantastically polling brained. Except times like now when the public is screaming for them to do actually do something.
And where did that bring you?
"And like my momma always said, 'If you can't beat 'em, join 'em'. Sooo, yeah..."
Whatβs the parliamentarian doing these days?
If they're smart - they are busy saying how great Trump is on social media. Can't be too careful.
The big problem Democrats have is that they are currently deeply unpopular, while Trump is relatively popular. Trump's approval rating is at 53%, while the Democrats sit at 31%. 70% of Americans are also saying that Trump has kept his campaign promises. Trump has also managed to get himself on the popular/majority side of quite a few 60/40, 70/30 and even 80/20 issues, which plays a huge part here, even people that don't like Trump, like quite a few of his policies by large margins. Trump is ahead of the Democrats on basically everything except abortion. So the big problem for Democrats is that if they double down, they are doubling down on being deeply unpopular, doubling down on a losing position, while their opponent is popular and in a winning position. Which is why they're not doing much and trying to recalculate for now. The Democrats are in a crisis of entirely their own making and failures.
This is also why the #Resistance has been so pathetic this time round compared to 2016, there is effectively no one willing to actually resist by comparison, because Trump and his policies are significantly more popular now than they were in 2017.
The Democrats are in a crisis of entirely their own making and failures.
I don't understand why people are so butthurt at Dems? Two things can be true at a time
The Dems can be ineffectual selfish spineless milquetoast wussies, AND the American people can be too stupid and violent to vote for them even if they were any good.
I genuinely just don't understand this charade where 99% of leftists pretend everything is the democrats' fault
Trump and his policies are significantly more popular now than they were in 2017
Why do you say this? Things seem about the same to me.
The polling data on his approval ratings and his policies seems markedly different this time. IPSOS has deportation of illegal immigrants at 60 - 66% approval, and Trump's anti transgender policies at 70-80% approval. YouGov has Trump's approval rating at 53%, a net 6% positive, pretty much an all time high for Trump, and historically quite high for re-elected presidents. Before the election, IPSOS had Trump beating Harris on almost every issue except abortion. If you time travelled and showed these numbers to someone living in 2017, hell even 2020, they'd be absolutely shocked.
Have you considered
Is the filibuster still a thing? So Democrats have to vote on Republican things for them to pass? How many times will they do that? Like what's crazy is they will not even do nothing if doing nothing would be helpful
Is the filibuster still a thing
It still exists but Trump is doing all this shit entirely out of congress so the filibuster - at least for now - doesn't matter at all.
Sucks to suck
So if you canβt do anything, resign?
