I personally know 3 people who started learning Mandarin yesterday. Exaggeration or not, there’s some legitimacy to this.

All of these threads are like this. The Americans on this app are struggling and they’re telling everyone who will ask and many people who haven’t asked (as is our way). People had no idea how expensive everything was here. There was a whole thread about how Americans have to work 2 or 3 jobs to survive and the Chinese users were appalled. We tell them about people working 72 hours a week who make minimum wage and they call it slavery.

There are a lot of Chinese lessons on there but I’m starting up Duolingo myself

So far, adding subtitles to videos and what language to type in. Not so much in a “hey you’re bad” sort of way as in a “hey this is important and everyone’s talking about it” sort of way

Nope. Almost all of the English language content I’ve seen is about being a TikTok refugee and attempting to make dialogue with Chinese users. There’s a lot of comradery and honest discussion, honestly. There’s also the occasional MAGA loser but those are generally reported and mocked from what I’m seeing.

I’ve been “trying to learn game development” on and off for years and it really does seem like the sort of thing where you have to continuously learn for a long period of time without having much output or without having output that would feel good to anyone but yourself. But then again I suppose that’s true for a lot of things. It’s just that I can’t spend a decade becoming a great musician to do the soundtrack and then also spend a decade becoming a great artist to do the sprites and also spend a decade becoming a great programmer to be able to code the game logic and also spend a decade becoming a great game designer to be able to put it all together.
