wtf GitHub?!
Hello dear Lemmy Community,
I have a very nice story to tell you all. I was having a blast over the last few days setting up a home server with completely open-source software. As usual, I encountered some small problems with specific apps, so I wrote two issues and one feature request on their respective GitHub pages. After a few days, I received no responses in the very active communities, but nothing too strange yet.
Today, in the evening, I used my phone to check if a specific issue had gotten any reactions by now, but I couldn’t find my issue at all. I just saw "23 open issues," and none of them were mine. After logging in, it miraculously changed to 24 open issues.
Well, after a bit more testing, it turned out I was shadow banned. After discovering that, I tried to contact their support, but I was told I need to activate 2FA via an app or phone number first. "No thanks," I thought, and went ahead to try deleting my (not so important) GitHub account. But surprise, surprise: the
I love right wingers, I love privatization. AN ETERNAL POX ON THE HOUSES OF EVERY RIGHT WINGER, THEIR ENTIRE FUCKING FAMILIES, EVEN THE DOGS AND THE EMBARRASSED LEFTISTS WITHIN THEM IDGAF
Not once, not twice, not thrice, but FOUR FUCKING TIMES IN A ROW has the incumbent right wing government shown its fucking ass and gotten reelected. The same government that has overseen the privatization of the electric grid. We can’t elect the independence party because of CUBA AND BENEZUELA, we would have miraculously become communist overnight (if only there was a just god) but somehow the compradors who’ve been in power for thirty thousand years haven’t managed to upgrade the island’s status from US colony to permanent circus members.
On New Years Eve, virtually the entire island is without power. The gaggle of buffoons that runs this joint, a Canadian energy distribution racket known as LUMA, says it’ll take two days to restore electricity. 2 days LOL HOW CONVENIENT? Just in time for the entirety of New Years festivities!
Am I, along with every person who hasn’t been bitten by right wing bullshit, at the center of some cosmic joke?
It would be so funny if all these newly ele
What's wrong with lemmy.world federation?
I'm on SDF Lemmy myself. SDF used to have its fair share of outgoing federation issues, and whenever one of my posts wouldn't make it to a non-SDF instance a community is hosted on, I would rant about it in the local SDF venue.
But for the past few months, I really haven't had any issues, save for the occasional post that would never make it across. And today I realized that all of them, without exception, are posts I make to communities hosted on lemmy.world.
Here's the latest one: it shows up on my local SDF Blender@lemmy.world mirror alright but is nowhere to be seen on the primary Blender@lemmy.world community page. It's possible that it will show up there late eventually, I've seen it happen many times on other instances as they synchronize, but if this one is anything like the previou
I just went to the carwash.
It was closed for maintenance. Very disappointing.
Mount Balrior Raid Expert is the worst that could happen to raiding
For those that don't know: Mount Balrior Raid Expert is an achievement of the new W8 raid. To get that achievement you have to obtain 100 points for each of the bosses of the wing. You obtain one point for each person in your squad for whom it was the first kill time ever that they kill that boss.
- It is a pyramid scheme. By design, only about 1/11 players can get it (at best).
- It encourages people that don't wanna train to do trainings. They are irritated more easily and are way less patient towards new players. Because they don't wanna train new people, they only want to get the achievement.
- It will only be harder as time goes on to get this achievement, further increasing the toxicity of it, as people rush to get it.
- It makes non-training runs worse. If there is an underperformer, you can't kick him because people will get angry that they wont get points for the achievement and they will leave. If you don't kick him, you'll both waste time on easily preventable wipes and
I want to fuck everything up and stop my meds
Obviously I won't because it's dangerous, but the side effects are too much especially from antipsychotics. My old psychiatrist used Olanzapine to stop my suicidal thoughts and help my depression which it did but I was on 7,5mg now I am on 30mg with my new psychiatrist. I gained so much weight, I sweat like crazy, I sleep 14 hours and have a hard time waking up even with an alarm clock next to me or far from me I just go back to sleep. It absolutely blunted my emotions and I am not motivated to do the things I used to like doing : walk in nature, natation. So basically it makes me hungrier while making it impossible for me to do a physical activity.
I got a second opinion and I am now on 15mg Olanzapine and I sent an ultimatum e-mail to my psychiatrist telling her basically that I'll keep working with her if she agrees to find other options than antipsychotics or at least find one which is weight neutral. We've tried Abilify it gave me akathisia, Quetiapine and Risperdal and she stop
everytime i give it a chance, btrfs lets me down
i've instaled opensuse tumbleweed a bunch of times in the last few years, but i always used ext4 instead of btrfs because of previous bad experiences with it nearly a decade ago. every time, with no exceptions, the partition would crap itself into an irrecoverable state
this time around i figured that, since so many years had passed since i last tried btrfs, the filesystem would be in a more reliable state, so i decided to try it again on a new opensuse installation. already, right after installation, os-prober failed to setup opensuse's entry in grub, but maybe that's on me, since my main system is debian (turns out the problem was due to btrfs snapshots)
anyway, after a little more than a week, the partition turned read-only in the middle of a large compilation and then, after i rebooted, the partition died and was irrecoverable. could be due to some bad block or read failure from the hdd (it is supposedly brand new, but i guess it could be busted), but shit like this never happe
Can't focus
My attention span has been complete and utter shit. I can't even focus on a movie without having to touch something or use my phone while watching a movie. When I was younger I was able to focus more but for the past 1 to 2-ish years my attention span has gotten much shorter. Waiting for anything is difficult. Hope I can focus better soon.

My Zionist Aunt Is Really Trying Me Today
This is the same aunt I got into a screaming match with many months ago, the same aunt my grandmother defended while claiming I was influenced by the devil and I was forced to apologize to. She is technically my great aunt (grandma’s sister in law) but I call her aunt because it’s easier.
Anyway when I got home from school I noticed my grandma wasn’t home and was told she was out with the aunt. I immediately felt dread as I knew that meant when my grandma came home the aunt would also be here visiting. She does this all the time and I usually just ignore her (with a cordial hello but that’s it), but I knew with the election results she’d yap away.
Almost immediately after she arrived at my house she was cackling, calling my name and telling me she was going to make me mad: “my friend trump won! Haha! My friend trump one!” Says the Portuguese immigrant in Canada. I just replied in the most deadpan voice “okay???” And left it at that. My grandma laughed and I was screaming in my head.
It's getting hard to use youtube
Invidious instances work less than 10% of the time, and it's annoying to keep hopping instances to get on to work
Now ghostarchive.org seems to be blocked too?? I submit something and it stays 'archiving' for a very long time, seemingly indefinitely.
I want computers to become personal again
There was a golden age when computers were something you owned, not like before when they were big machines your employer or university would give out access to, nor like after when they went to the cloud, you bought what was essentially a thin client and every software became a service.
At least in the olden days the computers weren't forced into every single damn part of society!
Now in order to talk with most of your friends and family, you have to sell your soul to every one of the thousand ToS's. It's impossible to meaningfully use your personal device you bought with your own money without the internet, as every app and their mom needs to call home for some reason. For some reason, it is morally acceptable for a company to prevent you from being able to have someone you pay to replace parts of your device with third-party components you bought with your own money!
Now, of course, you can simply install some Libre operating system and use Lemmy, or Mastodon or wha
Marcus fucking Crassus set my (M, XXXVI) house on fire
So, the other day I thought I smelled smoke somewhere, and my house was on fire. There happened to be some of Crassus' slaves around and they refused to put out the fire until I sold my house to him for a ridiculously low price. My atrium is ruined and now he's charging us an unbelievable amount of rent.
Something's wrong with my ears for the past week and it's making me quite uncomfortable
Sorry, not sure if there's a more fitting community for discussions, but 196 doesn't have specific required content ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So, last Sunday I suddenly got high-pitched tinnitus, mostly in my left ear. I thought it would be gone when I wake up next day, but it was still there. Then on Tuesday and Wednesday I had some pain and pressure in both ears. Unfortunately, I'd need to get referred to ENT by my GP, and she was on vacation. The substitute was there for "acute cases only".
So far this was just... quite annoying. I tested for possible changes I haven't noticed with frequency generator on my phone. With medium volume, both ears went to 19.5kHz just fine.
Thursday it improved. Or so I thought. The tinnitus got quieter. Later during the day I went to check again. I started with 16kHz at lowest volume. Suddenly, I could only hear it on my right ear, so I started panicking.
Left ear fell from 19.5kHz to 15.5kHz in just 1 day. This was a fairly sudden change, and I am not ex
Xbox "Support" is absolutely useless
In all the years I’ve had an Xbox account, which going by my first achievement is a little over 15 years, I’ve never had to contact their support department.
Unfortunately that changed this week when I tried to buy my daughter a game using the Ask to Buy system.
If you’re not familiar with the system it works by making child accounts ask a parent to buy games for them. They click the buy button and I get a notification on my phone that they want a game. I then log into my account and buy it for them. Sounds great.
However the game I bought for her still showed as needing to buy it on her account despite me having the receipt email and the money taken from my bank.
So I request a refund which was instantly approved. This was last Friday. Today she gets an email saying “upon your request this transaction is under investigation.”
Woah hold on, I requested no investigation.
So off I go to the Xbox website expecting to speak to a real live human being.
After filling out a form tell
A few days ago, I asked if Mint would run okay on a Lenovo T460 (I appreciate all the advice). I got it working, but the installation was a big pain and I totally blame Lenovo.
I got the T460 refurbished and I really didn't want to run Windows 10 on it. I last used Linux for any real length of time a good 20 years ago, so I'm pretty inexperienced with it at this point and I had to figure out how to install it myself.
They made it unreasonably difficult to first install an OS from a USB stick. I had to go into the BIOS, turn UEFI to legacy, turn off secure boot, reboot to boot from the USB stick, install Mint, then turn legacy back to UEFI to get it to boot from the hard drive. This took about 2 hours of trying to figure it out by doing a lot of forums reading.
I do not blame the Mint community or the Linux community as a whole. There is absolutely no reason that it should have been that hard to install Mint on that notebook.
I don't even think getting into the BIOS once time should be necessary, but changing a BIOS setting so you can install the OS and changing it back so you can run the OS off the internal drive is just ridiculous and I find it hard
I'm fucking tired of this job hunting shit.
I'm applying to jobs constantly, filling out applications like a machine, tailoring each individual submission to the company I'm looking at. I'm getting jobs that just don't say shit, no response, so I follow up and then they suddenly act like they give a shit or they just outright tell me the position is no longer available. I call these places, and I don't get an answer. I email them, and I don't get an answer. This is often leaving me to have to go there in person, only for them to tell me "lolno", and what the fuck is decent about that?
Listen, I understand company managers can be "busy", but is there any shred of decency in you that can make you hold the empathetic viewpoint that maybe people applying for jobs are looking around for jobs constantly? We don't have the time to hunt you down to get a definitive answer. It's no pain to shoot an email or a text and just ring my phone to spare me from some bullshit.
This emotionally daunting process is the worst. It's only made even
For me the last good version of the OnePlus 8T was Android 11
Why you may ask? Simple : Bloat, battery life and the UI (the last one is subjective)
Since I updated my Oneplus 8T to Android 12 I felt like something was wrong. The constant notification to access location for nearby devices despite me not wanting to (no option to disable that easily). All the fucking preinstalled apps. And the ColorOS layout.
Since this version I searched and searched for a good custom rom with good battery life and for now I settled with Jaguar. It's based on Android 11 and the developer is very security conscious. You can even lock the bootloader if you donate.
The problem for now is SafetyNet. I can't launch all my apps because of that.
Am I the only one who felt like this since this update ?
I just want to say FUCK DAVID ZASLAV
David Zaslav is the CEO of Warner Bros. and cancelled Coyote vs. Acme for a tax write off. I was so excited to see this film, but no, corpo pig David Zaslav has to go and ruin everything yet a again. All he ever does is cancel and remove shit to fatten his fucking wallet.
\
David Zaslav has killed Final Space, the Bat Girl movie, Scooby-Doo Holiday Haunt and has removed countless more. Why? Because he's a greedy bastard that hates the audience and artists alike. He removes content purely because he doesn't want to pay the artists as is.
\
This shit shouldn't be fucking legal.
Casual acceptance of "othering", transphobia, discrimination
I guess most of us deal with this at some point:
The thought occurred to me, I want to take self-defense classes. So I'm thinking, well those may be segregated by gender, so I'll just join the men's group to avoid making a scene, stirring up tensions. Even though my body, mannerisms, clothing, is indicative of a woman. I don't pass all the time, but I'm getting much closer.
But I was willing to be casually misgendered, to be othered, to accept less than what I'm fighting for every day (recognition, equality), so other people wouldn't feel uncomfortable.
How is that OK?
I feel like it's a common issue for all minorities. Stay out of the way, try to fit in, deny your identity, settle for less. You'll be safe, you'll survive. For what?
Is this the reality I'm risking everything for?
When I vacationed with my partner, I deliberately chose porta-potties and unisex bathrooms. Nobody told me too, I wasn't forced. But what if a "Karen" blew up at me and caused a scene in the wo
