If you're still on Lemmy...
Inception bitch!
You left Reddit because you wanted to tell a message
I left because I was banned on a game subreddit
We are not the same
Wait, what's wrong with Lemmy?
If you know you know
I mean, I presume... I don't know, so I don't know
People don't actually want to engage with different opinions
There are many communities still on reddit for which there are no alternatives on lemmy as of yet and if you want it to surpass reddit you need to stop with the toxic attitude and the false sense of superiority especially since a lot of the content on this platform is just reposts from 4chan, x, reddit. If curious folk come here and all they see is toxic threads and reposts why would they stay here? This is mostly in response to the comments I've seen on here not the thread itself.
Lemmy’s biggest problem is how aggressive and uncompromising the people can be.
So what’s the alternative to Lemmy? IRC? It seems like every social media platform has problems.
I'm a big fan of IRL, personally.

Its true. I have friends still using it and they can't seem to break free. I used Reddit since its inception, but left it immediately during the api-pocolypse and never looked back. I did the same with Proton when the CEO praised the GOP. I have no loyalties to tech companies.
I will die on this hill - the Proton CEO was right when he praised GOP in the context of the time, and situation.
The situation was: GOP accidentally* going against Big Tech and pro-citizens, while Democrats were defending Big Tech (just to be in opposition-by-default to GOP). Specifically, the CEO's tweet was about how Trump nominating a fairly loudly outspoken anti-Big Tech person to a very high position in the DOJ was a good thing.
The time was: just before Trump 2 took office and showed what a shit-show his admin, and GOP have become.
The guy was ONLY talking about Big Tech and anti-trust policies nothing else. He never said "GOP is good for the US" or "GOP is good for the world", he said "GOP are doing a bunch of anti-trust and anti-Big Tech moves right now and it's good".
People dropping Proton for this reason are the epitome of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
it was because Trump was throwing a hissy fit at Meta and Twitter for allowing people to express anti-Trump opinions.
I've been trying to break free from Reddit ever since the api-pocalypse and subsequent ai-pocalypse. I mostly found my home on Tumblr for a while but it's taken a long time to find replacements for some things.
That's why i left too though I only did it recently bc the app i used only stopped working like a month or two ago.
Neither of these are true lol. Someone has to tell the right wingers they deserve the death penalty for treason.
Keeping away from X is more of a health thing honestly,
I know at least for me, it leaves me worse off reading through posts on there even if I've tried to fight them
That’s legit. If this post were a call for good self care and mental health, I wouldn’t have commented. I tire quite easily of individualistic solutions to social and institutional problems.
Reddit has become practically unusable. Mods censor EVERYTHING even if it doesn't "break the rules" it's worthless trying to have honest discussions.
Not even censoring, also outright stealing for karma farming. I've had perfectly normal photos being criticized as not within the rules for bullshit reasons. An alcoholic drink aggressively marketed in two "variations" for men in women in pointlessly gendered was taken down with the bullshit excuse, that men and women have different metabolisms so it wasn't pointless. A week later there was a post about this drink with a lot of upvotes and my exact photo from our local supermarket. It was posted by one of the very active accounts. Mods are taking down promising content in some subs just to post it themselves.
Mods censor EVERYTHING
This is not a Reddit issue, this is a "subreddit I'm subscribed to" issue. I'm not seeing that problem.
The problem I AM seeing, though, that's ACTUALLY making it unusable is how they fucked up the latest UI redesign. Ctrl+Enter no longer works, spellcheck is force-disabled when using the Markdown editor, posts no longer open in a panel, you have to open each one in a separate tab or reload the main feed every single time, everything is slow and clunky... It's just badly written, badly optimised and badly designed overall.
old.reddit.com is still the best client.
I once said on /r/nintendo in the context of Nintendo increasing the price of games that even if you enjoy their products, there’s no excuse to defend their anti consumer practices and that there was way too much “corporate boot licking” among Nintendo fans. It wasn’t a statement directed at anyone specifically, but I got a temporary ban for “derogatory name calling.”
Like…I fully understand it’s going to be a sub of Nintendo fans, and I also consider myself a fan of a lot of their games, but if you aren’t allowed to be critical…then banning me for that post kinda proved my point, lol.
I got an instant permanent auto ban for joking about pushing someone down the stairs. It was 'supporting violence'. I appealed and it was auto rejected. It's become absurd.
i got a ban for reporting a sub too often where people sold CSAM
Dude im so tired of bans and creepy tracking that ensures you cant engage on the site... I do enjoy the reddit user friendly platform but im so sick of the overreach from the mods.. i have had an account up for a while that just got permanently banned because I accidentally engaged with a sub i forgot had banned my og account.. and because of that old account that had an IP ban it was somehow tied to my new account made a whole year later! Even though i use duckduckgo with full protection and cleared all my data.. but Im done.. its not worth the headache..and trying to use lemmy world now feels better. Still getting used to it here

I fucking hate Reddit.
DuckDuckGo doesn't hide your IP. Your IP is a fundamental networking number used to route traffic to your computer. It can also change for many home internet service providers over time, so it's a bit stupid of Reddit to use them, though they might be using more advanced fingerprinting mechanisms and merely saying IP.
I hear you. Right there with ya.
Their threshold for "calls to violence" is ridiculous. Got a ban for commenting I'd slap someone just like the person who got pranked slapped the person who jump scared them.
My ban was for saying there should be mass protests outside the building in which that American judge was held and that these protests should prevent anyone from entering or leaving until that judge is released. Apparently, that's "violence", even though it's self-defence against the violence of a fascist state.
My ban. A bloke purposely ran over a 12 year old boy that was riding his bike. Seems a group of youths had verbally hassled this bloke so this was his reaction. Thankfully it was caught on film. This happened about 50 miles from me here in Australia.
Well anyway my comment was that if he had run over one of my two boys he might have ended up in hospital, there might be broken bones and I might end up in prison. I mean it was an angry knee jerk reaction to a horrible situation.
Well I got a site wide ban for threatening violence. I didn't actually threaten anybody. No warning, no temp ban, not just banned from that one sub. Appealed but it fell in deaf ears.
It's me, I'm the problem... (Sorry I'm old and couldn't help it)
Sorry I’m old
Anti-hero was only 3 years ago...
They will follow us everywhere. If the medium is commercial, the capitalists will capture it. If its public, the extreme social interest groups will capture it.
“Extreme social interest” like universal healthcare / basic income, human rights, being anti genocide, pro-human rights, basic privacy rights… list goes on.
My good fellow, extremists are not here shitposting, they’re running the biggest economies of the world. World’s richest man did 2 nazi salutes a couple weeks ago. Twitter is full of nazis. Spotify is hosting Andrew Tate podcasts.
“Public/open source = bad” is exactly what those people want the public to think, because it can’t be monetized and easily controlled.
If you're still on Lemmy...
...you're supporting the solution!
I do not see how Lemmy helps with anything other than allowing people another excuse for escapism and scrolling on the internet over actually developing life skills, seeing new sights, socializing with humans, getting better at understanding people, and actually making an effort to communicate with others, doing some small part to make the world better.
This shits so funny bruh, stop using social media as your excuse for not developing skills, yeah its addictive but you make an active choice to not delete these apps, if I want to get shit done I delete tiktok, there you go, no longer distracted by easy scroll dopamine. Went i want a break from learning skills, seeing new sights, I redload it, wtf do you think social media is, there is less small talk and more proper socializing on lemmy/reddit type platforms than any other
Then why are you here?
I actually enjoy talking with others on here. My worldview has expanded because of it.
Sounds like a YOU problem.
I think the 'problem' the meme is referencing is supporting centralized social media run by corporations. I think the 'problem' you are talking about is more along the lines of tech addiction. Something can fix one problem without fixing every problem.
with reddit the CEO ad shareholders control what gets promoted or silenced; with Lemmy they don't have that power. that's how it helps
Link aggregate sites do perform an actual function outside of the use case of doom scrolling. It's a way that I engage with my niche hobby groups, aggregate news, and troubleshoot niche tech issues. There's a reason why you Google a question then add "reddit" at the end.
The only thing Twitter has over something like Bluesky is the fact that Bluesky is so milquetoast and nice that you don't really get any of the drama you get on Twitter. Like, I never see comic fans going "Black Bolt would DESTROY Saitama in a fight!" and anime fans going "Nu uh! ONE PUNCH!" on Bluesky.
Same with Lemmy tbh. Lemmy is 80% politics, 5% memes about politics, 5% memes about Lemmy being better than Reddit, and 10% Linux.
It used to be so much more Linux, but replacing that with politically charged statements parading as memes isn't a much better alternative. My two least favorite parts of Lemmy are how every conversation is somehow just one degree of separation from Linux or Nazis. Meme about dogs? Now the conversation is about genocide.
Honestly I've become so disillusioned with Lemmy over the last few months. Almost all of the discussion I see is liberals saying all conservatives should be executed, leftists saying all liberals should be executed, and tankies saying that anyone not willing to self-immolate in protest of the genocide in Palestine should be executed (but don't you DARE mention any genocide not perpetuated by the West.)

Is this image from something?
Reddit is like CNN, which is Fox-lite, while xitter is ( oan and newsmax)
If you're still on Earth...
they are here now
Don't we still have a few years before lemmy somehow enshittifies?
The fact that this is being upvoted so much I think demonstrates a big misunderstanding of how the fediverse works.
Nobody owns Lemmy and if a instance does something shitty it costs hardly anything to change instances. Nobody owns the lemmy software, and other softwares like mbin/piefed exist too with the same content.
It's impossible by design. If an instance enshittifies people will just leave the instance.
The protocol itself could surely start its journey if enshittification? In which case different, possibly incompatible, branches would spawn fragmenting the Lemmy space. Still miles better than the whole thing burning to the ground. But with no shareholders looming around (yet) we can hope it won't come to that.
if .world says being a minor is bannable suddenly there's no minors anywhere on Lemmy. A minor example that is understandable, sure, but it's just to show that a single large instance can cause a lot of change if they decide to.
Isn't that the exact same argument for Twitter? If Twitter gets shitty, people will just leave? Because I feel like we're not really seeing that.
Not really. It's not a centralized platform by design - unless you're talking about the flagship instances, which are a common problem with federated projects
It'd be pretty difficult, any instances that start that shit would be defederated with a quickness, but I don't want to be too optimistic lol
I don't want to be part of a problem. I want to be the whole problem
Apparently if you want to do that you have to buy Twitter
have you ever seen Lemmy
ON WEEEEEEED
Surprisingly, no. I should do that sometime. The only time I’ve been high in the last… forever, I drank a THC bev and went through a game bundle I bought, started up Cow Life Sim RPG and ended up playing it all day. It’s an insanely amazing game for what I expected was a shitpost game. Pterry4lyfe
Bro, I've been high basically every fucking day for the last 5 years for sure but we're getting on a decade here.
There isn't much shit I haven't tried on weed because raw dawgging this timeline is a guaranteed shotgun slurpee.
Bro I'm one week into a tbreak and it's painful
There's some weird shit going on, man. Beans flying everywhere, dudes who don't want to shit for 3 days. Who's that sending pictures of dead girls to everyone? I don't know! Mod team, go! Mod team, go!
love me some half-baked
Lmao well I found this place cause they won’t let me on Reddit anymore. They didn’t appreciate my colourful thoughts on Musk.
Honestly you could get banned for upvoting someone who stated someone seemed agitated and should try following dear leaders advice and take a shot of ivermecrin, a shot of bleach, and take a nap.
Watching reddits fall over the span of 12 years was certainly a thing.

Your not gonna like the fact that Nobody likes a grammar Nazi

If you're still using the Internet in any capacity...
If you're still using written word...
If you still are
Well other than politics reddit is quite good. It's the best for asking stuff about unis, degrees and jobs
Which part is your favourite? The ads every few posts, the lack of meaningful discussion, or the constant barrage of notifications with no purpose?
Well I used to have good posts on my feed because I built my algo that way
I have reddit turned shit in the recent years. And they even banned for saying my country needs gender neutral laws. so yeah I guess overall it's bad
No it isn't. You can't talk freely in there at all without being banned.
Being banned for saying your opinion is the worst part
I was banned for saying my country needs gender neutral laws
I think OP means "the mediocre, least bad intersection between critical mass and topical discussion."
Like, you can probably find users/subs about universities/fields and actually find people in them to respond. Lemmy is great, but good luck finding a mass of discussion around a niche location/field.
Reddit is horrible and deteriorating, yes, but still.
Sweet, are Advice Animals back?
What if I'm on drugs?
That's fine, you're supported by a problem

They won't come here, and they're on reddit because
I'm doing my part!
Bluesky is far far too left.
Would rather be too left than whatever the fuck is happening on twitter.
