What is your favorite retro console?
  • Favourite as in the one I love the most. Model 1 Genesis, or Virtual Boy. Love their aesthetic.

Favourite as in best Library. PS1/PS2. Massive library of games which are still being enjoyed decades after they were launched.

Favourite as in still using. By my books, I’d consider the PS Vita as retro now, if not then the Nintendo DS/PSP.

  • It’s fun to zoom in on the GameCube icon on the controller spool. At 4K it doesn’t look like there will be detail, but there is.

  • I happy to hear there shape are unique enough to recognize their wireframe. I was a bit worried that they were a bit too generic.

  • Made a wallpaper based off of some icons I made
  • Bold assumption to think that I have a Neogeo pocket color. (I'm broke)

  • Fun part, since I've made each stylus for each system, the icons are all unique. There shouldn't be (I hope) duplicates.

  • Made a wallpaper based off of some icons I made

TL:DR, made some Icons for 3D Models, turned them into a banner for social media, liked it so I made it into this wallpaper.

So over the years I've made various icons for controllers and systems for my 3D Printable Display Stands. These Icon and cut into the model to know which part belongs together.

Anyways I needed a new Banner on YouTube so I took them, threw them into Inkscape and turn it into this.

I am very pleased with the results, and kind of wished I had more icons to make it more detailed.

    All your for $49.99/year.

    LOL JK.

Nah, made this for a banner image, and just loved how well it turned out that I just kept that wall paper. The icons are designs I made in FreeCAD that I've turned into SVG and made into this wallpaper.

I got an (almost) internal Floppy Drive working on my Mint Desktop
  • I have a dell laptop with that port too. Upgraded my CD drive to a CD/DVD combo drive

  • Recommendations on casual GB/GBA games?
  • Pokemon Sapphire/Emerald/Ruby/Leaf Green/Fire Red were my goto especially for grinding. From sound and memorization along you can play pokemon without looking... Or at least I could.

Zelda Oracle of Ages is another game which I found calming. Its more puzzle than combat, but there is still combat. Not goof got meeting but good for afterwards.

The GBC Harry Potter games or Prisoner of Azkaban are fun RPGs that I played before Pokemon. A fun time too, and can almost be played under a desk (don't ask how I know)

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, rogue like endless(ish) dungeon crawler. Amazing story, but the post game is just a grind perfect for fiddling as you are just doing the same thing for 99 levels... Until you find the boss. Better on DS with Blue rescue team, but red on GBA is a good choice.

Outside of mega man battle network, the rest of my games are platformers which don't fit the bill

  • I got an (almost) internal Floppy Drive working on my Mint Desktop
  • My desktop is now unplugged, I am too terrified to plug it back in. Send help

  • I got an (almost) internal Floppy Drive working on my Mint Desktop
  • At it's current pace, it might take 7.5 million years

  • I got an (almost) internal Floppy Drive working on my Mint Desktop
  • As I said above

I have a Floppy to USB adapter inside my rig, and since my motherboard has an unused set of USB 2 headers, I just plugged it into that.

So 1 adapter and 1 usb header, and it reads it as a USB Floppy, which I believe Linux has drivers for.

The device is shown as /dev/sdd (sda is 1TB SSD, sdb is hdd#1, and sdc is hdd#2)

  • I got an (almost) internal Floppy Drive working on my Mint Desktop
  • The drive has been making noises since yesterday and it's still not loading. I'd say I'd get back to you, but I don't think it'll load.

  • I got an (almost) internal Floppy Drive working on my Mint Desktop
  • The world may never know :D

    And totally not password123!

  • I got an (almost) internal Floppy Drive working on my Mint Desktop

So why did I even want to do this? Because the front panel of my PC has a 3 1/2" drive hole and I wanted to populate it.

    !

Fine, real reason is because I have a few legacy machine lying around and having a floppy drive accessible is nice to have.

How does it work? Well I have a Floppy to USB adapter inside my rig, and since my motherboard has an unused set of USB 2 headers, I just plugged it into that.

Otherwise, it was just plug and play... almost.

Why the drive works as Plug and Play, linux mint pokes the USB to see if it's still there, so I have a small script at boot that disables it for that internal header.

I am just socked that it works, and while it sucks that I need to be root to read the disks, I am just happy that the whole setup works at all.

    Let's discuss: Nintendo DS
  • Honestly since the New 3DS screen is so small, the slight blurring is negligible to my eyes. So long as there isn't certificating in the image, like shimmering and or screen tearing, I don't noticed it.

  • Let's discuss: Nintendo DS
  • My first system I could call my own (not sharing with siblings) was the fat Nintendo DS. It will always be my favourite out of nostalgia.

But my primary DS is my New 3DS, does everything want and plays everything.

For me the DS is the Pokemon machine, from the mainline series to the spin offs. Such a good time to be a fan of Pokemon. Even the knockoffs were fun like Fossil fighters.

The DS was also a good rpg power house the first system I beat Chrono Trigger on.

Then there was the slog of platformers, from new Mario bros, to license of game dubious quality, nicktoons unite anyone?

The 3DS was just an overall disappointment in comparison, game selection was limited and 3rd parties just didn’t give it the time of day. Don’t get me wrong love my 2d Zelda and Metroid revivals on it, but outside of Nintendo games, it didn’t offer me anything.

  • How to install Minecraft on Linux Mint?
    1. Minecraft is officially supported on Linux through deb or snap here: https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download/alternative

    2. Unofficial some one packaged it up as a flatpak which can be found here: https://flathub.org/apps/com.mojang.Minecraft

    3. As for ease of mods and other things, Prismlauncher is my go to, though I primarily use it to avoid the endless login requests from MS on the base launcher.

It can also be installed officially via flat hub here: https://flathub.org/apps/org.prismlauncher.PrismLauncher

  • I have been getting into emulation (discussion)
  • I love Emulation since it can be on completely different ends of the spectrum. On the one hand you have ROM collections on modern system, like Capcom Arcade Stadium, or TMNT Cowabunga Collection.

On another you have complete reverse engineering project like PCSX-Reloaded, and community developed emulators with retail games are based on, all open sourced and technically legal, so long as you have the hardware, and tools to back the ROMs, BIOS's, and other material required.

Then you have the complete black market, where the ROMs are illegally obtained, the BIOS's are just downloaded from a random server, and the emulators are paying to get access to the latest retail games patches like Yuzu.

All 3 of these interact and play off of each other, like arcade collections using MAME, being able to extract the ROMs from collections to use in emulators, and Nintendo using someone else's ROM dump of their own game for Wiiware. That it's just interesting that emulation works at all.

I personally love it, and try my best to get my ROMs, ISO, and BIOS's without resorting to downloading it.

  • What Linux distro surprised you the most?
  • Can't remember any more, either it was installed along side another package, or it was installed because of intel openCL support. Either way it's been over a year since my last Manjaro install borked, and I've been running (and upgraded) Linux Mint.

  • Should I buy fallout 4 goty from GOG?
  • Why you shouldn’t buy FO4 on GOG: On Linux it’s a bit more work, installing the game via steam it’s just one button and you are good. GOG you need a third party game manager like Heroic or Lutris. From there you can add it to steam, you’ll also want to download art as the ones provided by lutris are low res.

You’ll also have a hard time with online saves as you’ll need to also install GOG galaxy, which isn’t fun and is very buggy.

That said, from an application perspective, it’s running on Proton regardless, so it’ll run the same. And since the folders are easier to find (more structured like windows), I personally find modding in general easier.

The reason you want to buy the GOG version is that it’s drm free and yours to keep. No launcher required. Not something you’d care about on a steam deck, but on a PC it’s nice to have.

  • What Linux distro surprised you the most?
  • For me it was installing apps from the AUR, like Intel Compute. Had dependency issues and errors every time other packages updated and when I tried to fix it, other modules would uninstall, and break my DE, or put my machine in an unrecoverable state.

It’s not as bad as that time my btfs file system broke randomly in Fedora, since I was able to recover my data. But it always felt like an endless battle with the distro to keep it going. Which is why I moved to mint.

I know it was a Manjaro issue since when I attempted to move to EndevorOS the issues were gone… though I dont like it as a distro (I.e. why isn’t a package manager gui installed by default)

  • FIXED: I've been getting this "Unable to mount" error ever since I've upgrade from Mint 21 to Mint 22. Anyone else getting this/know how to fix this?

H1_SD is the name of a MicroSD card I'm connecting, it does connect a second later, but it's annoying to keep dismissing this error every time. I am also getting it with regular SD cards and USB Drives regardless on which USB Port I've connected it to, and which format it's been partitioned too. NTFS, exfat, fat all respond similarly.

EDIT Welp, I was able to brute force a "fix". There appeared to be an issue with the Nemo configuration between 21 and 22. Not sure what the issue was specifically, but deleting the users ~/.config/nemo and a reboot fixed it for me.

Tutorial, learn how to install DaVinci Resolve 19 in Linux Mint 22. It's not easy, but it's possible.

How to Install DaVinci Resolve in Linux Mint

I run Davinci Resolve on my machines and I've had a heck of a time trying to install/run it on Linux Mint 22.

So I put off upgrading my main rig until a good enough resolution came around. Which turned out to be this. I followed it and it worked for me.

Apparently this is an issue caused by Ubuntu 24.04 so this guide will help if you have issues on Ubuntu too.

    Love replaying PixelJunk Monsters

This is the Ultimate HD version on Vita, and man it has been my goto for just relaxing strategy games. I just wished it explained the controller better, like pressing Square to drop bombs if you have 5 gems.

It's available on Steam and I can only image how good it'll be on a Steam Deck, as the game was fantastic on the Vita and PSP.

Melting 3D Printed eReader cases on my deck.

I made a 3d printable eReader case for my wife. Wanted to test what would happen if we water logged them and left them in the sun to dry.

Two of the cases are made from PLA while the other is made from PETG. They are all held together by thread and leather.

The test here is to see if moving from PLA to PETG was the right move since the last time I did this, the case turned into a banana.

My eventual plan once I've finished with my testing is to sell these cases and make their designs available for others to print.

I took me 8 hours, but I finally finished building no my MK4 and did a few prints

So far I am happy with it, though I wouldn’t make another kit at least not without a drill.
