  • I used to think this was bad, all these bills to wreck the internet and control those who use it. But… I now think not only do these all fail miserably, it drives innovation making the internet more robust and healthy.

Of course, that may change, but I’m an optimist

  • Nothing stopping meta from adjusting or hiding the vote count later. Hundreds of ways to fiddle with that thing, some really subtle and would not generate drama.

I’m pretty sure the current reason to remove the fact checking is so the company is not put on a collision course with government, a government that will lie so much daily it will break all records.

So, just because they can alter the community notes does not mean they will

  • Being self employed, I have the most unsympathetic clod, who does not work sometimes, and then yells at me demanding I work overtime for free to make up for stuff he did not do.

I may talk to myself in the mirror sometimes too

  • I think nobody debating knows either way unless one takes the official counts at face value.

In a regular democracy, like most of Europe, this is easy, the counts are publicly vetted by all the candidates or their representatives beforehand.

Here in America this is done differently. The majority of the votes in many states are announced to everyone at the same time including the candidates. Nobody can say “here is a proof I can understand so the vote is ok”. We have to trust several private companies without verification or understanding how they did it. Nor do we use secondary verification in many places

So it’s a matter of faith. It you trust, really trust all these private software companies to get it right and not be compromised or corrupt . Then that is the end of the conversation.

If you don’t trust them I’d think they have ulterior motives that is another thing.

But again, who knows? Which is why doubt has been able to exist here

  • It’s hard for me to get excited by the label of “election denier” . Ignoring the partisan labels and all the loaded meanings behind the term.

It’s very hard to deny or defend the vote counts if they are not publicly counted. Mail in ballots are publicly verified.

Election machine counts are done by trade secrets. Often by conservative owners. We take these on faith, and ignore exit polling or other checks and balances.

So this election denier stuff has all the hallmarks of some talk about God, faith and county; which is great but everyone has an opinion with no facts to back them up

  • Like everyone else I was very excited by what happened that day. But now, looking back, my attitude is .. meh.. because what lasting consequences did it have? The people who would have benefited from that event are now in power again, and I have seen no evidence the country is better or worse off from it now four years later.

If anything, it highlights the ineptitude of the so called justice system that goes after the little people caught up in events, and ignores the congresspeople and other office holders who tried their best to kill their fellows by using an easily swayed and excited crowd.

And the saving of government seems more like a rain check on faulty merchandise than anything else

  • 25 years ago I noticed the trend in the movies in the theater, and realized the USA was becoming fascist. I was sad, but surprised later at how long it took. I rather thought it would be faster and more dramatic, and not this creeping sorry mediocrity seen later in politics

  • America went through huge population shifts, and changes of economy the last two generations which was much greater than the original Industrial Revolution in the 1700s.

It sort of broke the neighborhoods being sociable places, destroyed grassroot movements, and prevented new parties from developing.

Politics that is new, these are created in the communities and transition from the local to regional so to national.

New parties cannot be developed on the internet.

  • Not only are there different character sets that seem like it’s Unicode, but the set in MySQL can change based on the session, the client, the server, the db , the table and the column. All six of them can have different encodings.

Just make sure all are using the same 4 byte Unicode. Different collation is ok when backing up because only important when comparing strings.
