Stop drinking bottled water: Experts warn of health and climate impacts
  • I'm not saying we shouldn't have safe drinking water provided to us by our municipal water supply.

What I am saying is that between the choice of purchasing expensive bottled water which this article and others say is effectively contaminated, is horrible for the environment, and largely comes from the same supply as municipal water does, vs purchasing a point of use filter system which can remove most harmful thinks in tap water, you will largely come out with better water for less money in the long run, with a point of use filter.

You are also doing better for the environment by doing that and getting a reusable bottle to take it with you. If you are worried about water on the go, look at something like a grayle travel filter or one of the other options out there already.

  • OceanGate’s ill-fated Titan sub relied on a hand-typed Excel spreadsheet
  • If it was setup properly, you just us an if statement like, "if communication lost to control for t>5 seconds, release balast" or something like that. I had 0 issue with the controller being an ots consumer good. The rest was an idiotic design, I won't even say it was engineered.

  • [DISCUSSION] Techniques That Changed Something For You
  • Buy a proper instant read meat thermometer and learn about carryover heat. Seriously, just cooking meat to where it needs to be and no more makes such a difference when cooking.

Along with that, learning when things need to be cooked to higher temps for structural reasons.

Finally, learning how to get good browning or crust formation. Its all prep and heat control but damn a steak with a good crust is life changing.

  • How much do you all pay for Power?
  • Its got some older fiberglass in the attic but it needs to be replaced as well since it is mildly compacted. Trees are in the plan too but that is waiting on the soil to recover a bit and the temps to drop off. Solar is a long term goal for cost and backup power but that may be a next house thing depending on how long we stay here.

  • How much do you all pay for Power?
  • I know where the losses are, the house and windows are from 1980 and there is a sunroom on the house that are just huge heat sinks. We are just waiting on funds to correct that stuff. We had some awesome shade trees but they were Ash trees and fell victim to beetles and disease so we had to have them removed so they didn't fall on the house.

We added a radiant barrier when the roof was redone in 2016. The ceiling penetrations were all sealed and all the can lights were replaced with sealed LED fixtures.

The ac is a newer variable speed high efficiency one with new ducting that was installed 3 years ago and other than needing a minor room rebalance made a big different in our electric bill.

  • How much do you all pay for Power?
  • Between 14.7 and 15.4c / kwh. Gexa in Texas. My last bill was $285. We have a gas stove, water heater, furnace, and dryer. Our gas bill is about $50/mo. The lowest our electricity goes is about $90 in the winter.

  • Twenty percent of hard drives used for long-term music storage in the 90s have failed
  • Drive failure in the 00s was really common. I lost 2 or 3 separate drives from different mfg over the course of a couple years. Newer drives are better but even in modern nas setups, I planned on losing at least 1 drive per year on a 4 drive nas even fresh out of the box.

Always keep data your care about in at least 3 places and in at least 2 different mediums with one preferably offsite. I like to have one drive in use, one backup that sync's daily, and one that I keep in cold storage unplugged. Then swap the sync drve and cold storage drive every so often.

  • Florida is disappearing from the national political map
  • Part of it is because our congressional districts are drawn like a bowl of spaghetti. In statewide elections it matters less but congressional districs were specifically drawn to pack and crack votes here.

  • I picked up a 5 v a couple months back because nothing else fit in that niche. Its a damn good phone. Only thing missing for me is a removable battery. I'd like a slightly smaller size overally but compared to everything else in the market, its small already.

Croup can eat a bag of dicks.

My 7 month son got croup and has been in an out of the ER twice this week. Its currently midnight and is getting another nebulizer dose before we get moved to a room. Hes doing better but its been rough. We are gonna be here at least another day for observation this time which is way better than getting sent home again to see how he does. Here's hoping he kicks its ass and gets over this quick. It sucks seeing my little guy sick like this.

Edit: he's doing a lot better today. They were doing the nebulizer every two hours and its been almost 7 without it now. Fingers crossed we are over the hump. Thanks for the support y'all.

Sound off, how is everyone doing through the storm?

We lost power around 4:30 A.M. and have one fence panel down but are holding on okay otherwise.

    Doing Butt stuff today

Happy Father's day y'all. To celebrate I am doing a 9ish lb boston butt on my vision smoker with hickory chips and oak charcoal. Its been on for about 4 hours so far. I have some wings waiting on this lovely hunk of flavor to get closer to done so I can pull it and wrap it before getting the chicken on.

Custom "Explorer" partscaster I built a few years ago.

25.5" scale neck, poplar body, coil tapping pickups, knockoff floyd from guitar fetish. The body was dyed using angelus leather dies (recommended by BigDGuitars on yt) it was a good first project to learn on and a lot of fun to make. Picture was taken before I installed the control knobs but it really pops in the sun.

PWC (jetski) thru hull bearing centering fixture. Printed on a creality halot one.

I am swapping a seadoo rotax 255hp motor into a kawasaki stx hull and I needed a way to set the axial, angular, and radial position of the thru hull seal so I printed up some guides to hold the tube on the driveshaft while I fiberglassed it in. It worked brilliantly.
