Alternative Nation: The Fediverse's Alternative and Indie Music Community
- [30 Day Song Challenge: Alternative Nation Edition] Day 4โฆ An alternative song that reminds you of someone you'd rather forget.๐ฅบ
DAY 4 of the 30 Day Song Challenge, alternative music styles!
Challange four gets a little deep and darkโฆ.
Each day Iโll post the challenge and you share some of your favorite alternative & indie songs that meet the challenge!
- Welcome to Alternative Nation! Notes on Posting in our Community.
HELLO & WELCOME to Alternative Nation, the Fediverse's largest alternative & indie music community!
We are all so happy you are here. You love music, we love music, and here we are, headphones on, in our own little world happily outside the mainstream while also supporting the growth of Lemmy, Kbin, & the Fediverse at large. ๐
Figured it was time to talk about recommendations on how to format your posts for maximum visibility & engagement and also let you know the different ways you can post to the community.
Sound good? Let's go!
. . .
โ๏ธ POST FORMAT RECOMMENDATION ๐๐ต
Key word here is "recommendation". I don't think we need strict rules to post, but here's what I recommend:
-
Band - Song or Album Title: At the very least, this should be included in your post title. Pretty standard way of identifying something. No worries about quotation marks, the text and the dash are more than enough. Obviously, if it's an article link, the article title would go here.
-
[Description Brackets]: Totally up to you, but personally I've been enjoying adding [Fresh] if the song or album is pretty new within the last week or two or so, or adding [Stream] if it's a link to an album stream link on Songwhip. I also sometimes use brackets to indicate the source if it's an article like [BrooklynVegan]. Not a rule, I just think it's nice to give some cred out.
-
Dates or small commentary after the title: Again, you do you. Year of release can be nice for older tracks & albums, or if you have a strong emotion about the album that you think needs to be in the title, go for it - though I think the caption section is probably best.
-
Album Art/Image or Link?: Lemmy is set up to share an image or a link as the primary content. Personally, I love album art or a cool image of the artist and would rather share the link to the music, video, or article in the caption. Lemmy's auto-thumbnails seem hit or miss, so to me it makes a richer post. But again, you do you!
Great! But let's say you aren't posting from Lemmy or Kbin?
. . .
โ๏ธ POSTING FROM MASTODON, FIREFISH, & OTHER FEDIVERSE MICROBLOGGING PLATFORMS ๐๐ถ
While having a Lemmy/Kbin account is the best way to not miss any comments, you don't need to be on Lemmy to post here. By tagging "@alternativenation@lemmy.world" in a Mastodon, Firefish (Calckey), or other federated microblogging platform post, you also actually post to our community! How cool is that!
But the format of your post can get real janky if you don't follow a certain format. My recommendation is set up your Mastodon et al post in the following way:
-
Make the 1st line of the post the title like "Band - Song or Album Title" - no hashtags or account tags here, they get real messed up on Lemmy.
-
After the line break from the title, include your caption and any links. Feel free to add hashtags in the caption area (I know people follow hashtags on Mastodon et al)
-
Include "@AlternativeNation@lemmy.world" in the post (just not in the first line, please). This is how the post gets posted here!
-
Finally, I recommend adding an image to the post - this will be the thumbnail on Lemmy!
. . .
๐ค HAPPY LISTENING! ๐ง
That's it y'all! Hope this helps. Please spread the word to all your alternative music fans here, on Mastodon, and even on Reddit. Let's build something special together.
Cheers,
ren ๐๐

Nirvana never had the best track record when writing decipherable lyrics, but when it came to women's rights, Kurt Cobain never minced any of his words.

The Breeders are on a US tour, and on a few dates, they're playing Pod and Last Splash, in their entirety and in album order.
This YT channel posted their shaky phone vids for both; this is the Last Spash second half.
I just saw them in Denver and it was great. That was prolly the 7th time I've seen them live and they seemed more into it, really focused on putting on a great show. I could listen to Kim & Kelley talk about anything for hours I'm pretty sure.

New track from Amyl and The Sniffers. Love the visuals. Much more low-key than their usual singles - but one of those tracks where it's worth paying attention to the lyrics.

@alternativenation Hey there! My name is Chelsea, I'm very green to Mastodon but just came across this community and figured I'd share some of my music. Comparisons include "Joni Mitchell meets Nirvana," Hole, and Patti Smith. I'm also a fan of alt from the 80's thru today - some favorites include The Replacements, Pavement, Bully, and Jimmy Eat World.

Another new discovery for me. This band is from Rouen in France. Have been listening, today, to their new album that just came out. This is the lead track. A pretty good racket, don't you think?

I am liking the sound of Stockholm's Girl Scout. A little bit like Sprints, perhaps. Here's another of their recent tracks that is a bit more jangly. Would go to one of their gigs if they played near me.

I have absolutely no club at what genre I would classify this. It kinda feels like Extratone/noise but it is neither of both. Its a rather sad song, but this is a song, that actually tells something without the lyrics. A very good song where lyrics and melody are working together to create a very atmospheric song.
- Dum Dum Girls - Coming Down [2011]
While finding more about The Linda Lindas, I discovered that Kristin from Dum Dum Girls was involved in their genesis. Hereโs a track that reminds me of Mazzy Star. I only recently made that connection but it seems quite obvious in hindsight.

- Cordrazine - Crazy [1998]iv.ggtyler.dev Cordrazine - 'Crazy' (Director's Cut)
'Crazy' is the single from Cordrazine's 1997 EP 'Time To Leave'. Directed by Brad Lawson & Ben Keenan Stream 'Crazy' here: https://open.spotify.com/artist/7H3NXY4n3p7BwmOL3zIeUK
I was reminded of this tune today. Cordrazine had a moment in Australia in the late 90s, with this song being reasonably prominent at an "alternative" level, even getting to #42 on the mainstream chart. The corresponding album reached #9.
The band was fronted by Hamish Cowan who had previously been in another indie band called Blindside with Cordrazine guitarist, Nick Batterham. I was socially acquainted with Hamish at the time, but don't know where he is now.

The album came out a year ago, but even though they are from the city I live in (Melbourne), I just discovered them today. I like the sound of this track and have queued the rest of the album to have a listen to.
Here's what a review I read said about them:
>Frankston's The Belair Lip Bombs deliver their genuinely unique brand of left-field indie rock with complete poise. > >At one moment you'll hear shades of Interpol and The Smiths, at others they hint at PJ Harvey and Best Coast. Ultimately, the band's infectious take on a well-traversed genre is their own. > >They will have truly cross-generational appeal, giving their younger peers the kind of guitar-driven indie rock many of them crave, and offering older fans something fresh that still taps into something a little nostalgic. > >They're honestly a band too difficult to describe, but one that indie rock fans must be across. They've already signed to Jack White's Third Man Records, so now is the time to get on board.

We are happy to announce that Bandcamp Fridays will continue in 2024.
Hey y'all... I know some folks have issues with the new owner of Bandcamp, but I still like to support bands via their platform.
If you have some money and a favorite band on there, go support them, eh.
> Bandcamp Fridays began in March of 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic when the shuttering of venues led to a loss of vital tour revenue for artists. Bandcamp Fridaysโon which we waive our revenue share and pass the funds directly to artists & labelsโhas resulted in millions of fans paying over $120 million directly to labels and musicians they love.
