  • Bit of a health scare for the ol' girl yesterday. Fainted, collapsed went to bed. I was in the garden and had no idea. ol' boy was down the bellarine gave me a buzz to see where she was. I found her completely out of it with fever symptoms. He comes racing back directing me on what to do / look for over the phone. Fuck she's lucky to have a medico hubby.

but jeez ol' boys language / demeanor changes when there are problems like the ones we've seen in the last 6 months. Shit gets calm, direct and accurate. He's normally a grumpy old bastard. We have our differences but with mum's polycrisis, we're both on the same page which has completely surprised me.

    • Damn, just saw this. What a lot to go through mate, I'm sorry you had to go through all that (and sorry for your parents too). Mum is indeed very lucky to have a medically trained husband. And it's good that he's able to see what matters and put the grumpiness aside in this sort of situation. Lucky he was not the one to have started losing faculties/abilities first...

If you feel okay with sharing it I'd be interested to know what happened to your mum to have gotten so acutely ill. I do worry about my mum because of her living alone and the kinds of things that can befall her

      • Yea sure.

About 15 years ago she had mouth cancer, a doc nicked the carotid artery, along with radiation therapy led to her losing her teeth over time as the jaw became necrotic.

Then she had glaucoma. They buggered one op over many, and she lost vision in 1 eye.

Then the rona hit and she didn't do any real exercise for 2 years

Another mouth op, made eating difficult..

Then she had a fall 6 months ago, her remaining eye ruptured, another 2 ops and the pressure was fucked both low then high, okay now but less vision than before

So it's a thing where it's difficult to eat, drink, talk, see, hear (which is unrelated to anything), exercise.

And it's compounding. Not getting enough to eat, lowers appetite, hard to eat anyway, makes exercise harder, which lowers appetite.. not being able to see clearly and poor stability / mobility due to lack of exercise and nutrition, lowers app... and around we go. The fainting yesterday was probs due to new blood pressure drugs and lack of water (hard to drink), which will increase risk of falls.. and around we go.

It's not really 'acutely' ill, it's just everything that's happened to her is working against her pretty quickly together since that fall and decline is x2 speed now. Personally I think she might have had a little bleed as her personality changed a bit afterwards but no one is investigating that.

There's also a lot of refusal which isn't helping her but what can you do.

She's had a lot of expert advice, but now it's hit a hard limit.

    • I'm really sorry to hear what's happened mate. I hope she'll be OK soon ❤️

      • Thanks man.

I just wasn't prepared for all these things to hit at once. Vision (and the shitload of drugs), teeth / food, physical mobility (and the risk of falls), hearing, memory, depression. It's hard to know what's feeding into each problem.

Used to visit my gran all the time at a 'well to do' nursing home and I really didn't like what I was seeing. The thought of it for the ol' girl scares me as there's a bit of complex care involved and I'm not sure they (or she) would cope and decline would be rapid.

I suppose age comes for us all, if we're lucky or unlucky.

    • Oh your poor mum, and you & yr dad. Hope she’s ok and is on the mend soon

  • DOOM. For I am blind to my most important need and ran out of coffee on this fine morning ...

...guess after such a long time I shall treat myself to a cuppa outside, at the laundromat. And then promptly pick up supplies on the way back.

Because of the sunny days I've been able to resume my prematurely terminated data collection for uni - definitely finishing today and then tomorrow I head back to some of the initial sampling sites out west to see how the readings might've changed from the same time of day between early March to now.

I'm so glad I'll be seeing a friend for dinner tonight. I would hate having to spend the entire weekend on uni.

E: I have finally finished PHM. Face may have leaked a bit near the end when somebody went back to find somebody else. Fist my bump! 😭 I found out they're doing a movie adaptation, I won't get my hopes too high as to how they'll pull it all off but I have to watch it just to see how they depict Rocky!

  • Skipped out on a family event because I'm just not ready for it, so went paddle boarding for hours and am now having wine and cheese in the back yard. Cheers all!

  • City excursion with family today.

Always a great bonding and sharing experience for us.

Both kids confided in us about different things.

    Parenting win.... hopefully.

Korean BBQ for dinner and jamming out to 80s music on the ride home.

Life isn't perfect but this was pretty close

  • Up early, washing done and on the lines, fresh brewed coffee from the stovetop made.

Ahh time to relax then make lunch!

  • another lovely day here, will go into the city 🙂

then back home for more unpacking and cleaning 😐

  • I just realised I'd forgotten about cancelling the insurance on my old car. Sorted now and a refund should be arriving shortly. Not exactly a windfall given the new insurance is nearly three times as much, but good to have back in my account anyway.

  • Lovely walk this morning and crashed out into emergency nap when I got home. Now. up. Quick shop and tidy up and then to a friend's for drinks in the sun.

  • I have just bought myself a second hand portable air conditioner on eBay. I'm a bit spoiled where I am with airconditioner coverage in most of the house, but the rental places generally don't have more than a single room covered. I have seen some stuff about adapting vent covers to pull intake air from outside to make the portable units more efficient, so it will be interesting to see if that works - apparently a major reason they don't work as well as inbuilt is because the hot air being exhausted outside causes a vacuum which pulls fresh (hot) air into the room, many units sold overseas have a second vent for that air intake, but for some reason they don't sell them with that configuration in Australia.

Even if that doesn't work out it should be efficient enough to let me sleep in hot weather, and it was a good price only 5 mins away from work to pick up. Now I just have to actually get a property to put it in. They have contacted references so that's a start, but it is one of the places you apply before you can inspect the property, so even if approved at this stage it is still just a short list. It does indicate the application wasn't just thrown in the bin due to having pets or something though, so I guess it is positive news. I'm trying not to become too attached to the idea of this specific place, but I'm mentally working out where all the furniture goes and how I'll decorate, so I guess that's not really working 🤣

  • Hot damn it's Not Cold At All out there. Have a tank top and very light cardigan on and feeling warm... friggin confusing...

Well if it's going to be like this can it stay warm until just before Anzac Day? I don't want it to get cold again before I have to go to the Tropical Soup.

    • I foolishly hoped for a warm Easter, so we'll be blasted by cold next weekend!

      • So far 25C and possible rain next Friday... It might end up cooling down again. Look as long as we can avoid max 16C days before I leave I'll be happy. Don't want to do deal with going from 16C to 32C and 90% humidity and 27C overnight...
