While tens of thousands of people have joined Facebook groups in Sweden and Denmark calling for no longer buying American, Norwegian company Haltbakk Bunkers has announced that it will stop supplying US military vessels with fuel.
This first US company they (and everyone) needs to boycott is Meta.
I'm in Canada and Facebook is huge for my business. We get more bang out of a free social media post than paying for advertisements anywhere.
I fricking HATE IT.
On a personal level, I almost never use facebook. I refuse to put it on my phone and really only use it not to post stuff for the business - which I do through a 3rd party social media app.
FB is huge in Canada for personal stuff too, me and my friends do not post meal pic or vacation or things like this, but damn marketplace and some hobbies group are strong there. Just the "Made in Canada" FB group grew from 50'000 members to 1.1 million in less than a month.
"All it takes for evil to succeed, is good people to say, "it's just business."" - Janet Leahy, Michael Reisz
Don't feel bad for using it for your business.
As you said, a free post is better than paid ads somewhere else. And you don't use it personally, that's the great part. Moreover, you use lemmy. Kudos to you
Norway walked that back.
Norway says it will keep supplying fuel to US navy after company calls for boycott
It was a private company that decided not to provide their refueling services to the American Navy, not the Norwegian government. What the government is saying is that they will not be not doing the same that Haltbakk Bunkers is doing. But this company stays firm. The practical effects will probably be minimal, since they are an important but rather small actor in the sector. But as a Norwegian, I am proud of them! (And not so much of my government).
Fucking cowards. "Free world" my ass
Add Google to that.
Absolutely! Remove all meta apps and close your accounts. Zuck is a big suckup to Trump and his software collects and sells your data as if there is no tomorrow
That's true, but first we need to reach enough people to get the movement going. In the meantime they should just turn on their adblockers.
Meta is bad although I would argue that X and Tesla are worse.
American here: genuinely, go for it. If you want to be even more highly targeted, you can also take a page out of Canada’s book: they’re encouraging people to target things that are produced in red states specifically, in addition to a general push for a boycott. Bourbon (from Kentucky), for instance.

And for us Canadian, there is always https://madeincanadadirectory.ca/
Sig Jolly til din cola. 🥤
✊🇩🇰
Is there a 'Buy African' list? I wasn't able to find one so far.
In South Africa, the law determines that if something's labeled "Product of South Africa" it can't have any imported ingredients (tho the packaging can be imported).
"Produced in South Africa" can have imported ingredients - and I've been boycotting almost all of that because of the omnicidal carbon footprint of importing things. It's easier in this country to live ethically tho because we can grow almost everything we need: from food to textiles; tho our energy production is some of the most unethical in the world.
Thank you!
As a Canadian, I have no problem supporting our EU friends.
And to be honest, just looking at the list you can tell that the ethics within those companies are completely different than what you find with the American alternatives.
Even without a dictator leading the States, buying European would still be better. 🤭
Pretty wild, actually!
Can you somehow add content to these lists? I think I didn't see Galaxus (european Amazon alternative) on there anywhere :)
great! as an American please keep it up. the only thing these assholes understand is money. support us by NOT supporting us!
Each day now, I don't buy a Tesla or an iPhone or a New York Penthouse.
That must be difficult, you're going through a lot and I'm here if you need someone to talk to.
As an American I support this action.
Bro, me too, fuck everything about trump, and right now, fuck us. I’m not buying shit unless I have to. Except from local shops.
I've felt this way since Mango Mussolini's first term.
Same, the only language Trump Co. speak is money, gotta hit em where it hurts.
I feel bad that as consumers at best we label all under Trump's banner, at worst we don't have the ability to punish only the red states like government tariffs can do
Stay strong
"Calls for Europe to stop eating garbage food like Americans." Sounds like a good idea to me.
Like we arent doing that already
Fuck Coca-Cola drink Irn Bru!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irn-Bru
lol
"Originally selling it as Iron Brew, the drink's makers, A.G. Barr, were forced to change the name of the drink in 1946 following a change in the law that stipulated that the marketing of products be "literally true". As the drink did not contain much iron, nor was it brewed"
"The brand also has its own tartan"
I sell this in my store in Canada.
I would love an Irn Bru sugar version. I don't like the taste of Aspartame
Irn Bru 1901 is that - and it’s caffeine free. The only irn bru I’ll drink now.
Made in Scotland from GIRDERS
I would've agreed with you a decade or two ago, but they changed the recipe.
I would if I could
Can we collectively decide not to respect American intellectual property laws to really hit the tech sector where it hurts? We don't get that many physical goods over here but most of our software is American owned. I advocate for not paying American tech companies anymore.
EU regulations that can be triggered in response to tariffs include an option to make that completely legal
Edit because I'm getting asked for a source: EU Anti Coercion Instrument that got passed in 2021 and came into effect in December 2023: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=OJ%3AL_202302675
Specifically Annex I, paragraph 7:
ANNEX I
Union response measures pursuant to Article 8
[...]
- The imposition of restrictions on the protection of intellectual property rights or their commercial exploitation, in relation to rightholders that are nationals of the third country concerned, which may amount, as necessary, to the non-performance of applicable international obligations with respect to trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights.
This applies to copyright and patents, but not trademarks as far as I know.
We need our own tech stack, that is at least verifyable. It's due time to kick out the American tech giants from government projects etc.
With America possibly becoming the new Russia it is just not safe to rely on Microsoft, Apple, Aws etc.
We need an Europan open source stack.
Piracy!
If we start ignoring the laws, we are no better than Trump and his clowns clan. Go for the alternatives instead. Also, If you keep using the US software they still get all anvertisement and telemetry which is more valuable to them than the software itself anyway.
Good to see major news agencies pick this up.
I’m American (embarrassed to say that right now) and came to visit this site to get off Reddit. Even we are exploring non-US options.
Welcome and have fun! Glad to see you over on this side :)
Don't be embarrassed of being an American, you can be embarrassed of your politicians, of the people that represent you without being embarrassed of where you were born. You can criticize all the bads things in your country (and your country has done) while also being proud of the good things!
But to be fair, you were warned about political parties from the start of your democracy, and even with the warning having just 2 is terrible.
make sure to leave a negative review of the reddit app.
Here's to hoping trump tariff war makes those stupid American pick-up trucks a lot more expensive to buy in EU. I hope the douchebags that bought them before have to pay way higher prices for parts now.
Not to mention Tesla.
Petition your governments to drop IP laws for US tech companies like Doctorow is encouraging. If the US isn't going to honor trade agreements, hit us right in our gold plated scrotum.
And stop enforcing them FOR them. I'll never understand US export laws !
Economic death to America!
I deleted my Disney plus and Amazon prime accounts last week and it felt so damn good.
Good on Ya!
I deleted Netflix yesterday. Was a bit more challenging than the other ones. We have sort of always had Netflix here in Norway.
Now we subscribe to a Norwegian service that includes Britbox instead. It has some US shows as well, but mainly European
Do leave a negative review on their app page.
Make a dent on us corp earning report, stock market is actually one of few sources Trump might listen.
This. Today I switched all my investments to Euro/EU only companies and funds, everything that has USD or US companies in the portfolio was a no-go.
Yup, me too. By coincidence I've moved from us platform to an non-us one so that nice too.
The idea isn't to eliminate all spend, it's the low hanging fruit and then go from there. I'm seeing it as a game with badges to collect!!

And so: Hello Lemmy! Here I am! Left 'socials' like reddit, dropped hotmail and google accounts ...... i'ts not much but it's start
Welcome, new one!
Welcome!
Welcome - just did the same myself or still in the transition of it. Soaking up so much information about how to take data / information in my own hands again.
Welcome! :D
Good, fuck the USA and it's garbage products. It'd be harder to do if they weren't shit now, but perpetually cutting quality is basically the USA's motto. Now they are experiencing it in the government.
Fuck us up, y'all!
Sincerely,
Ashamed American
Another terrible situation like Brexit - where the voices of many reasonable people are ignored. Feel free to come to Europe any time
In solidarity with you, brother.
-- Likewise, an ashamed American.
Will do traitors <3 Get an earthquake from all the ww2 vets and former presidents spinning in their graves from whats going on with you <3
In what way exactly is the current administration better?
I fully support this movement, but I expect it's mainly an echo bubble and will remain as such. Leave the fediverse and subreddits and most people won't even care.
My gf (who is not on the fedivere or any social media) came to me the other day and wanted to stop buying U.S products. Not that we really did before. Spendrups make better soft drinks than Coca-Cola and Pepsi anyway.
Same, my wife and girlfriend told me about it before I found out here. Seems to be spreading on TikTok.
Not to discount your perspective, but I think it's important to also acknowledge the close connection that you have.
My spouse is much more tuned in to things like this than many of their peers, not necessarily because they have more interest, but because we have a close relationship and so we share stuff a lot.
Spendrups is a licensed Coca Cola factory. Make sure to check for any such shenanigans before buying Spendrups.
I'm trying to think, apart from technology, what do I buy from American brands?
Sure there might be the odd brand that is unknowingly American, but I'm left asking "What does America export?" because I can't think of much in my life.
Oh that's great though. I really do hope that I'm proven wrong 😊
The Canadian one has really taken off. Its not just on Lemmy. Im seeing more Canadian products on the checkout line than ever before and Ive even started seeing rotting American produce at our local store.
Everyone I talk to irl is limiting their US product purchases. Canadians are pissed.
Oh I do believe in this one! My response was rather eurocentric, I realize that now. The Canadians are even more hurt as it stands right now, and their response is incredible.
Perhaps I'll see a greater response in my own community when the pointless tariffs also hit EU. Currently people are plenty pissed about US aligning themselves with Russia. It won't take too much to ignite it further.
I do hope that I'm proven wrong, and that the boycott US movement is doing better than I thought 🙂
Huh, would have thought American produce is too full of preservatives to rot
It is really taking hold. Honestly, we are not far from it becoming social stigma to buy American. Showing up with a Starbuck’s cup will get noticed.
Wouldn't say that, after Gaza people are quite used to boycott certain wares.
I know a lot of people irl which already don't buy coke or eat McDonald's anymore
I've heard more about it elsewhere. It's very real. It was on national tv news the other day, and some grocery chain is marking European products to help customers and such. I'm not sure how big the economic impact will be though. Where I shop, most stuff is already local.
Awesome! 🙂
Perhaps it's me who is in a bubble IRL!
Even if the economic impact turns out to be negligible it is clear to me that the movement is born out of a change in mentality, which I'd argue is even more important then the monetary impact.
I've spent a fair bit of time in Denmark, small population with fewer news sources makes thing spread VERY quickly. Not to mention, they are very patriotic. I'll ask some Danish friends about it and report back.
Same link is on the front page of reddit.com
Support your local breweries and buy their sodas and not coca cola <3 I do this and ngl Oettinger cola-mix and Riegele Spezi are amazing
Uhhh... I don't think I will
it is not hard to do if it’s actually better. Spezi 🥰
This is the time for the Italian MoleCola to shine!
Is it coca cola with extra hair?
Trouble with that in the UK is Coca-cola is the only soft drink really that hasn't bowed to the sugar tax and changed their recipe to be full of artificial sweeteners.
I absolutely can't stand the taste of these sweeteners and some even make me feel kinda of bad after drinking them.
Idk if it has even spread to England but when I lived in Scotland I only ever bought Irn-Bru
It hasn't? When I was in Manchester in January, anything except the cans had a bunch of artificial sweeteners in it, in order to lower the sugar content. I don't know if the cans are a small enough size to skirt the tax, or just not be worth raising the price over, but bottles of regular Coke definitely had artificial sweeteners in them.
Guess you found a market hole :)
As a mexican I can say that this will be really hard, mexicans love so much Coke btw we have popular alternatives like red cola, but I've only seen masons consume that product
Oh yeah i saw that in a documentary! Its called a holy drink, isnt it? A brew from god. Using it in native and catholic religiouse rituals
I’ve been boycotting Starbucks for 10 years because it’s shit coffee, and McDonalds for 30 years because it’s shit food.
American food is the worst thing you can ever ingest.
can you imagine if the movement that we are experiencing in canada takes place all over europe? that would be huge
I think it will. China has announced sanctions on particular US companies. I'd like to see more of that on Trump-positive businesses.
Good and the Orange Shitstain wants the EU to import more US made goods. Canada should cut the electric power flowing to the USA when the US tariffs commence.
Put it under "maintenance".
As a Canadian in this shit for a month, go for it!!! My last groceries contained 0% products from USA, if it's doable for us Canadian, you can do it too! And don't forget to cancel netflix, disney+, prime, etc.
I'm an American and I appreciate your effort
Edit: I'm on mobile and can't tell if this uploaded blurry or not (looks kinda rough to me). Here's the source.
Not sure this is correct though. Of course all these companies are multinationals, but not all of these are American companies. For example Unilever is British and Nestle is Swiss (have not checked them all).
However Nestlé has a whole host of reasons for their own boycott, straight evil stuff they are directly responsible for.
Right, I think it's maybe representing the 20 highest grossing food brands in the US, whether they're US companies or not.
It was low res. Thanks for the link. It was high res there 😊
Pretty sure Nestle is Swiss and Saputo is Canadian. No doubt they have big US operations.
My Netflix membership is 10 years old. I've cancelled it yesterday. Also my prime membership.
Oh they are gonna love this torrents-csv.com
Alldebrid.com is French. Just use that for streaming with Stremio or Kodi + Seren
If you want to learn how to do successful boycott campaigns, you should look for the BDS Movement, that has worked to spread awareness to boycott companies affiliated with the illegal Israeli occupation and genocide against Palestinians.
And no surprise, you will find many US companies in there. Also it should come as no surprise, that the US wants to outlaw even talking about boycotts in many states, as well as corrupt European politicians like in Germany attacking the notion of boycotting companies involved with brutal crimes against humanity.
We need to join efforts in reducing the economic power of Imperialism, whichever shape it takes.
Awesome. I hadn't heard of this.
Quick look at their website shows they've actually achieved some pretty great things.
This is a great example. You can't just stop buying everything. Boycotting specific companies with specific demands is the way.
Sodastream? What did they do?
It is an Israeli company that used to operate a plant in illegally occupied territory in the Westbank as well as mistreating Palestinian workers. It moved to a factory in the Negev desert inside the 1967 borders. The new factory however is part of displacing Palestinian Bedouins that live in the Negev. Also the mistreatment of Palestinian workers continued.
Ultimately of course all Israeli companies also pay corporate taxes which finance the Israeli executive such as Army, Police forces and Intelligence.
https://bdsmovement.net/news/%E2%80%9Csodastream-still-subject-boycott%E2%80%9D
https://www.cjpme.org/fs_244
Looks like they had some facilities on palestinian land.
It's an Israel-based company https://www.cjpme.org/fs_244
Sodastream have a nasty habit of looking for a vulnerable, oppressed population, building a factory on illegally stolen land, hiring a few of the locals for peanuts and then screaming that they are "helping" them.
Did it to the Palestinians in the West Bank and when that failed relocated it in land confiscated from the Bedouins. It's in an artificial forced resettlement area where Bedouins have been forced to live in an Israeli-constructed town and industrial park.
Sodastream used to have a factory in the West Bank where they employed hundreds of Palestinians. Because of boycott pressure, they moved and hundreds of Palestinian workers lost their jobs.
BDS only cares about hurting Israel, no matter the consequences to Palestinians.
Gotten rid of nearly every US digital service I have. Physical stuff I will still probably roll with my Apple devices until they wear out since they're relatively new, but almost all the data and apps are basically European and/or open source services. Work related stuff remains the challenge. Next phone will be HMD.
I know that my country - The Netherlands imports a lot from the US, so i am trying not to. Ditched all my Meta accounts, closed Amazon account/prime and Kindle, moved away from Google to several other services, stopped several streaming services and when we buy products from the supermarket actively check wheter products are from the US, and replace them with local/EU/Canadian products.
From Canada, I've done the same as you, but I'm struggling to de Google. Any suggestions?
good luck, and don't flame me for using Proton lol
GrapheneOS, CalyxOs or LineageOs as an alternative to just using android.
F-droid and Aurora store for almost all android apps, Obtainium if you can find your way around git forges.
Tuta mail, Posteo and other alternatives for Gmail.
Firefox and Thunderbird as replacement for Chrome and Gmail app
Duckduckgo/Ecosia(uses Microsoft's Bing), Kagi(good but paid), SearX(free but you can run into limits quickly), Marginalia(nonpaid websites only) :- all are replacements for Google search, also learn to use search bangs to quickly take advantages of different search engine
i don't use almost all of Google's other products but a search would pop up other alternatives. Don't forget to use Google Takeout if you have an account with them.
Goodluck!
Switched from Protonmail (after being a paying email/vpn/drive customer for 5 yrs) to Fastmail. Couldn’t be happier - if you have a 1Password account you get a discount and via the integration with 1Password it auto populates masked emails for discardable logins - same as SimpleLogin for protonmail.
Pretty satisfied with kmail/infomaniak
You could use services from the foes of USA like yandex and baidu
Migrating cloud servers to European hosters. Give EU money to improve/build a linux desktop. Use that desktop in government, schools, universities... (instead of Windows). Fork Firefox. Host fediverse services and use them where the governments use Twitter / TikTok / Insta.
Harder: Mandate for mobile phones with a user installable OS (Cyanogen etc.) Force tech companies to provide total transparency about data usage. Cancel any safe harbor agreements.
In the end, everything the Open Source crowd wished for.
Btw, I'd have no issues with American / Russian / China hosted open source stuff when we can review what it does. Ah, ok, a "european code review agency" might be a thing.
Ditch GitHub start using codeberg.
Plenty of office alternatives, outlook is easily replaced (didn't know outlook had banner ads until recently, what a shithole)
If you prefer vscode try codium, some plugins may be missing but so is lots of ms bloat. Kate is a stellar alternative too!
Yep, I know that for myself. But I can't switch away from github as that is where the huge company I work for has its stuff - and it needs convincing the enterprises, not the individuals.
Personally I just have my own repos which I can move anywhere in an eyeblink. But it takes political power to. move governments, departments and companies.
For example I have no way to ditch Teams or Outlook, because that's the accounts my employer set up. I can't ditch my RSA hardware token, because that's what my. employer's customer uses. I can't ditch. my work phone as only Samsung and Apple are vetted.
That's something that needs to change on a pan-europrean level.
Our family Netflix subscription ran for over 10 years and yesterday I canceled it. I also canceled my subscriptions for discord, chatGPT, claude and dropbox. BOYCOTT U.S. SOFTWARE
Just learned claude is also US. The only European AI seems to be Mistral.ai
yes, it is not bad, but a few months behind here is the ios app: https://apps.apple.com/de/app/le-chat-by-mistral-ai/id6740410176?l=en-GB
actually works well free and generates really good images with blackforest api
Honest question, not making fun, not judging: why do you have a subscription for chatgpt and Claude? Do you use it that often? Or is work related?
work related. tbh i have even more AI subscriptions that I cant cancel (yet)
and yet your country is much worse off! grow up
godspeed
Fuck yea, keep doing this! People around me in the USA are fucking morons and can't be bothered to do this. Even the liberals that complain about their corporate masters are too chicken shit to do it.
I've been waiting 10 years for this to catch on.
I've been avoiding corps for years. My impact on the current boycott will be the same as it's been all along. Talk it up, those of us have adapted can help others to get on board.
I have been trying so damn hard to talk it up. Doesn't help that I live in MAGA-town USA at the moment.
I even handhold my closest friends (self-proclaimed liberals) on how to stop feeding the beast, and they think I'm over-reacting. Most folks in the USA are just... not willing to back up the things that come out of their mouth.
I’m not saying I want this to happen, but it might just be more effective to have a foreign nation’s intelligence service wipe out Elon Musk . I mean, I don’t want him to die or anything, but if you could just do a Jimmy Hoffa and make sure that nobody ever finds his remains that would be just swell
Wasn't he supposed to be going to Mars anyway?
If you want, Moscow is the Mars I hope he ends up abandoned on the planet with no one to talk to except Matt Damon
Take a page from China and remind him who's the boss. When was the last time you heard of Jack Ma?
boycott us, please please please please
Send this.
Not just northern europe. In all of europe!
Oh yes. I'm a developer and I've stopped using DigitalOcean and switched to Hetzner.
I wish people would boycott spending on the big holidays. That'll hurt the oligarchs the most.
Big holidays? America will be in a recession by Easter at this rate
Fuck you Orange Clown !
This would help the American people fight the Oligarchs. Godspeed, friends.
Boycotts echo louder than speeches; Haltbakk Bunkers leads by example.
🐱🐱🐱🐱
Cancelled a bunch of subscriptions after trump support for Ukraine. Seems like the only language americans understand is 💸
People should focus on boycotting evil corporations in favor of open, sustainable and fair alternatives. Picking a fight against another nation is only taking people away from that objective
No. People should boycott all companies which operates in an evil country. There exist plenty of ethical companies that aren't from usa.
Companies should be taxed incrementally like individuals are. That way mega corporations would be much less likely to exist
Want to really hurt them?
Stop importing their oil.
Want to really hurt them?
Also we can hurt his lapdog, not buying Tesla, not investing in Elon shit, and of course leave X
Tesla nazimobile.
Unfortunately there's hardly any American product I use here in Malaysia, so I can't make any sort of impact.
The only American things I use are various software applications I need for work (and no, as an employee I can't simply switch to FOSS).
I'm down, anyone have a great list with images I can use so I know which groceries to avoid?
Pretty sure Brave is American.
It's also sketchy.
ReVanced is just youtube though...
Thanks! I should have been more specific, I was thinking more in the groceries department.
The only one here I use on the left is YouTube, and I specifically pirate their videos to host over LAN.
With the exception of nextcloud and firefox, those are all crap.
Here's one with images (not 100% US specific):
I imagine that would be very easy, outside of software and digital services.
Even in Canada I've nearly managed.
Why outside those services? You really think it's not possible yet?
I mean, I'm close, but I'm tech savvy and willing to just not be on the same social media platforms as other people. Even then, if I want to stream something without sailing the high seas non-American options are limited, although that of course might be different in Europe.
Fun fact, a lot of "American" stuff is filmed in Canada anyway.
Kind of ironic that the people joined facebook groups for that...
Make due with the tools you have at hand.
Change the system from within.
Facebook makes a certain amount of money per person. It's probably not that high.
If they can easily gather and find simple quick replacements for US goods that probably affects the US economy more.
I don't use Facebook for this myself, but have made lots of changes effectively now moving large sums of money from US companies to EU equivalents. There are still some stuff left, but most things are changed.
I think that has a bigger effect and is a lot easier
Here's to hoping this happens
I'm boycotting everything. Shopping local if I have to have something. Cash only. I only carry my bank card and one credit card for emergencies.
What exactly does the US produce that is imported into the EU? Consumer market, of course, where one person has choice in the matter.
tech
Europe produces that themselfs and has potential to build the few things it doesnt build right now
Guns
That's like saying you import cars because they're big in American culture.
The differences are similar. American ones are large, vainglorious, and for purposes the user will never encounter.
European ones are precision engineered to the function required.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAKO
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heckler_%26_Koch
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beretta
Beretta is French and Glock is Austrian.
Europe produces its own
Ding, dong, the reich is dead!
Drag is very much looking forward to singing this.
Actually banning Coca Cola would probably mean a lot less people becoming sick and obese
I won't go as far as to nuke all my accounts just yet but last year I made a big effort to use less of big tech companies. This is my drive to slowly continue doing that this year. I will finish my games that will not run on Linux without tinkering and then I'm quitting the hell that is Windows for good.
the biggest US exports are its software products. Until the time we have a way to avoid Google, Reddit, Meta, Microsoft, ChatGPT etc, we aren't boycotting anything meaningful.
This is a useful collection of European software products
"Don't let perfect be the enemy of good". With changing our grocery and household purchases, cancelling Amazon and Netflix, and looking for alternatives to U.S. products, we are all doing the best we can, and I do believe it will make a difference.
I'm on a now almost full boycott personally but my new Danish employer provides their employees with the newest iPhone (only phone you can choose.. I tried to get another), American laptops, and uses Microsoft for everything including cloud. It's the companies that need to start thinking and adapting. I aaked them "you know that all of our data is held by Trump-led USA, right?" And they just say "yea, but it is what it is".
Is there a non US search engine that queries English sites?
Have already replaced basically all US software products for personal use. Unfortunately work related stuff can't be boycotted yet, but hopefully we can see an improvement there too ASAP. Hardware still from Apple, but will once it becomes time to replace it I will definitely switch to a HMD phone.
Call for boycotting US products spreads across America
