If they were interested in pushing fucking state communism and raising the quality of living perhaps this was the wrong move. I suppose the counterargument would be that letting the west export its manufacturing sector somewhere else would have been a missed opportunity, but perhaps (and I say this as an American) the better move ideologically would have been not to engage with manufactory colonialism for a quick buck.
