Hey all, I just wanted to give my personal view, now is the time to start talking about the Fediverse seriously with friends and family. I always have casually, but I'm starting serious talks with them now that the political climate has... shifted.
We are not the only ones who are concerned about our online privacy. Even people I thought didn't really care are suddenly concerned (or realizing) that their private chats and DMs may not be as private as they thought. I've found that many more people are interested than were even just a few months ago.
Fediverse is a bit harder, I've found it's easier to convince family with "It's a more private space for us to share vacation photos like we used to". Even my aging relatives know that facebook isn't safe to upload intimate family photos to, and they're looking for a solution. Friendica works well for this (and it's relatively easy to host a family instance).
You can see it if you check https://fedidb.org/. Monthly active users have gone from just a hair under one million to somewhere around 1.4 million and still growing. How do we think this will go? How do we feel about this influx of new users? Has PixelFed done something different that Mastodon hasn't?
I feel like I didn't really recognize having different "platforms" like Mastodon, PixelFed, etc would give multiple opportunities for the fediverse to make a "first" impression with people.
It’s rough right now politically in the US. A lot of people around me seem like they’re ready to give up hope. It makes me incredibly angry seeing Zuck up there with all the other billionaires, and Elon is a parasite that has infected the government.
I often find myself wondering how I can make a difference. How can we regain control of our world?
Idk if I’m being dramatic, but the Fediverse really seems like it could be our response to these fuckers controlling the narrative on social media. It could be more than just an interesting decentralized social media platform. I really think this could be a key step in reclaiming our democracy.
Am I being dramatic lol? Do you all feel the same way? I was kinda getting emotional even. Like we could bring real change. That gives me hope, which is something we are desperately lacking right now.
It’s not just Lemmy. It makes me happy to see all the Fediverse platforms (specifically activity pub based) blowing up.
Like mastadon, peertube, akomma, etc. and having them run off one server?
I've found Yunohost, runtipi, caprover, and portainer (if using docker?) as potential options. They at least support one or two fediverse apps. Has anyone had any luck with them? I just got used to the idea of using a vps hypervisor/panel to manage multiple servers or having multiple sites on one server and was wondering if there was something like that for the fediverse side.

Openvibe’s clever app that integrates multiple open social networks, including Bluesky, Mastodon, Nostr, and Threads, just got a boost toward its future development. The company on Tuesday announced that it has received outside investment of $800,000 in a round led by Czech Founders VC, which includes backing from WordPress.com and Tumblr parent company, Automattic, as well as Tensor Ventures.
Czech Founders VC and former CTO of Mews Jan Široký also invested separately from his firm.
Launched in 2024, Openvibe initially supported three of the more prominent open social networks, all of which operate using different protocols: Mastodon uses ActivityPub, Bluesky runs on AT Protocol, and Nostr powers a number of third-party apps. Openvibe later added support for Instagram Threads, as that app became further integrated with ActivityPub and opened itself up to the developer community.
As CEO Matej Svancer explained at the time, the idea behind his app was to offer users a more f
Moderation has gotten out of control on the internet, where people abuse their powers to perpetuate narratives they like while censoring ones they don't.
Where can I find lemmy instances that support freedom of speech? It's fine if you don't like it or have issues with it (feel free to move on without a reply!)
The idea is cool with all the apps interconnecting, but where do I go to actually see this in practice. Does the cross communication only work on platforms like Mbin/piefed, or am I not seeing something.
I keep hearing thanks to activity pub posts here can be seen and replied to from elsewhere, but I haven't seen it.
Stood up my PixelFed server yesterday. Federation seems to just...not be happening. I manually added a bunch of servers in the "instances" tab but they all say 0 users. If I search for exact profile names, I can find them but they're completely empty. Pictured is my server on the left and .social on the right. The weird part is that a handful of posts do come through. Like, maybe a dozen in the last 24 hours in my global feed.
I made a test post and someone on .social followed me, so they can obviously see me, but when I went to follow them back, their profile was also completely empty.
Is there something I need to do to "kickstart" this into gear? Do I need to just continue waiting? It's been ~16 hours at this point.
I just closed my Instagram account and was about to start uploading my photos to a private account on Pixelfed.
I was just wandering if the images I upload are stored encrypted or if everything is stored as is on the server.
I couldn't see any mention of it, so I assume an instance owner could just go through everyone's photos on the server even if they're marked as private.
I tried looking through the source code to see if I could answer the question myself, but nothing is jumping out at me.
So hopefully someone with more knowledge than me can answer this question for me, thanks!
I hope this directory will help you find the PeerTube platform (instances/servers) that fits your needs. I must say, I am a little worried how few platforms actually meet the criteria I've set. It's possible I've missed some, so please let me know in the comments. Enjoy.
General platforms
The following directory consists of PeerTube platforms that fits the following criteria:
A general platform.
Registration is open.
Follows (federates) at least 500 PeerTube platforms.
Thinking of hosting one for myself and was wondering what the downsides of each are. Do they all interact fine with each other? Can I log into mastadon apps with misskey/pleroma accounts? Is it like lemmy where the app specifically needs to support mbin (interstellar) to use that account?
Which one requires the least resources? I'm on ios so I'll likely gravitate towards whichever one works best with ios apps. I do see that sora sns seems to support all of them + bluesky.
At a time when established social media platforms are facing criticism and turbulence — from TikTok's temporary shutdown to Meta's withdrawal from fact-checking and growing criticism over political content moderation — a new approach to social media is gaining some attention.
"Help us put control back into the hands of the people!" declares Canadian developer Daniel Supernault, whose open-source platforms aim to provide privacy-focused alternatives to mainstream social media.
Supernault's Kickstarter campaign, launched on Jan. 24, has already exceeded its initial CA$50,000 goal, TechCrunch reports, raising CA$93,022 (approximately US$64,839) as of 11:02 a.m. PT today. The funding will support the development of three platforms within the Fediverse — a decentralized network of interconnected social media services. These platforms include Pixelfed, Loops and Sup, designed as privacy-focused alternatives to Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp, respectively. Each platform rejects traditional
