  • Folk heroes are great in all sizes; but I am in more of the mindset of “what have you done for me recently?”

One increased some health benefits for some people due to fear of people copying him; the other got noticed by the press yet changed nothing. One was inconvenienced for a few hours, the other threw away his future

  • In my campaign I used to have a cursed scroll of reading. Which provided such provoking and interesting content based on one’s feelings and desires, it trapped the person into reading it for a very very long time unless saving throw.

I can imagine how much more effective it would be if one could reply to that reading, and enter another level of entrapment.

And here we have cursed scrolls in real life. Me 30 years ago would never have guessed .

Unrelated, but this is where I stop doomscrolling for the day. So long until tomorrow, unless I make my daily saving roll

  • It’s more hidden but more of a problem now, actually.

But it’s such a complicated multi faceted issue with things that vary state by state it’s hard to do coverage without literally writing pages and pages. And very few people know all the stuff going on.

I will list some of my issues being generic as possible: (edited formatting below)

    • it’s possible to write voting systems which allow one or two people who run the company to skew the results without the rest of the company having a clue. ( this I know by my 40 years of writing software)
    • election voting systems are very complex and can be messed with at over a dozen (literally) different ways, other than #1
    • the code and systems are normally trade secrets
    • the admins are unknown, who has admin keys is a private list. The security here is unknown
    • many states have exit polls done afterwards which are significantly different from the results
    • many states flunk or withhold data for basic tests for ballot stuffing
    • many places give printouts and receipts but no recounts use these, if recounts done at all
    • the general rule of thumb is if it’s too complex to understand how the voting works then it’s not fair voting
    • any electronic voting requires faith and trust to use. This is not how democracy works
  • But until many states have elections which pass United Nations reviews, and international witnesses, and stop having oligarchs counting the votes without oversight. All of this is just pandering to reasonable people. Just words with no weight. Hopes and dreams. The voice at the back of one’s head while doing something stupid.

  • This, what you said, is so important. In my years doing my own business, I have had literally hundreds of scammers, some smarter than me. Its best to just not even try to talk to people trying to contact you first in these platforms.

And many many scammers will post jobs, and one cannot tell by seeing if this is a new account. Some of my multi year assignments have been initiated by sketchy new accounts. At the same time existing accounts of clients usually have their own preferred coders. If you get to talk to an existing account with a history, check out the reviews and be wary. There may be a reason they are seeking out new blood.

I think its ok to go off site to talk to the new job candidates. Often, cannot have decent conversations in platform. And an in depth talk is free for all, and will often give clues in the first few minutes of talk.

  • (edit formatted)

Things I learned the hard way:

    • Never agree on anything until can see the existing code and talk about everything.
    • Milestone payments only. Stay away from any lump sum payments or percentage cuts.
    • Full payments in escrow first.
    • Never reply to people you don’t know who seek you out, only seek out jobs.
    • In first contacts ask questions first, don’t talk about qualifications. If questions good then customer knows you know the tech well.
    • Learn to walk away if instincts kick in
  • People who support the server have greater voting rights; no revenue steam. But I think it would be cool to sell pirate plushies!

Unrelated: If you code it’s not hard to insert ads in between the comments on your own lemmy instance. It would be a cool experience but probably would create significant vitriol and site wide bannings by most, if not all, major instances for trying.

The problem for most monitization is psychological only ; many ideas would be an unwinnable uphill battle. Yes, can put ads in but also be a leper with zero traffic. You could probably put in perks if have good coding skills or can hire good skills; but if public relations done wrong then you are “poison to the community”.

You could try to do awards ( Reddit gold) but may get laughed off the platform. It’s a tough crowd

  • Freelancer platforms that have paying stuff do exist, but it requires effort to learn how to use them; and during the long learning curve, one is usually grossly underpaid and sometimes scammed and or cheated.

If in financial emergency it’s often better to not try this and try menial work outside industry. But one can find it as a decent resource stream after some trial and error which can take a year or more to learn

  • Many people commenting here have legitimate points, including op and the people who are angry at him.

My two cents is that if Ukraine dropped conscription and lifted the ban against travel, the army would shrink significantly.

Not because the majority don’t support resisting, most do not want to be annexed by that corrupt Russian mess. But because the conditions on the front are very well known and many think/want others should do the fighting.

Many people want to leave Ukraine, but can’t or some try risky ways out. Majority support Zalenski, but he and his party have more than some critics about more than a few issues. And corruption is still a huge thing despite a remarkable cleanup that is still ongoing.

But without conscription and the authoritarianism, I have no clue how different it would make things. Certainly the front lines, if any existed then, would be different. Ukraine might be gone

  • Yet here we are, it and the plugins handle too much of my daily traffic. It’s easy to dismiss the piss poor coding, but is done at our peril.

Everyone of us has personal data stored in those God awful plugins, in their thousands of basic security holes

  • Word press code, and plugins, do not sanitize out of the box. You have to call an additional function, each time, that is not provided automatically. Many home made plugins miss that; many popular plugins used to be home made ones

  • It’s not the case itself that gives me pause. It’s the feelings it invokes in myself.

I seen this before, the feelings and cynicism and outrage and hope. Well, more accurately I’ve read this in history. Usually the times were bad and getting worse

  • That was only clear to those who think the USA is a working democracy, where the purple states have fair elections. It was clear to idealists or uninformed.

To those who understand why computer ballots should not be used, or just plain cynical, it was clear the choice was out of our hands
