Yeah that counts exactly
Considering the Switch 2 (with those pretty joystick well covers to protect from drift, omg) and the Ryzen Z2 Go announcements, the low cost and availability of Steam Deck & parity level APU machines for purchase now, and the giant 1080p gaming install base represented by current gen consoles, it sure seems like low spec & 1080p gaming is going to have a pretty sunny future. I am hoping this gives small and medium sized development teams a chance to show up what is left of AAA gaming.
What are your favorite low spec gaming setups right now? I'm enjoying a 5700g APU system the most these days. Mainstream wise, I've been playing Elden Ring and Injustice 2 and Vampire Survivors. The last Indie I played is this beat-em-up / horde survival game An American Werewolf in LA which was pretty cool.
Deal with this all the time. I never trust an archaic term because of how many common archaic terms are like that, or worse, with their implications. And idioms like you are citing are really common. A favorite of mine is counting how many famous idioms are just considered excuses to go to the restroom in the Midwest. See a man about a dog? Poo. Take a constitutional? Poo.
Oh yeah it must be the Trump years again because Mark Cuban is back at it pretending to be the stopgap solution everyone is already bypassing
that's cool how three problems are ones NYT have majorly enabled and the last one is fake
really great article, thanks for sharing
Oh I should try this. I have been using Manuskript with some success but it is a little too much organizing and I prefer markdown shorthand.
They say 1:12 if you are also using paste :D https://www.masterclass.com/articles/authentic-japanese-miso-soup-recipe
So as far as sensible personal practice vs Meta:
-
We can do our social media elsewhere, like we are here on Beehaw ✅
-
We can stop doing biz on Meta platforms and delete accounts ✅
-
Avoid Meta products like Quest VR (extremely easy bc trash) ✅
-
Avoid using Meta code (React) in our projects ✅
Any other good ideas I am missing?
*edit PS: A helpful thing for me to realize was that the people in my life who advocate the hardest for staying on Meta products are also the people who tacitly support all the horrible behavior of corpos and politicians. It is two sides of the same behavior.
Yes I can imagine leaving the slaver's stolen territory they call "Missouri" was a good move 😜 . Bet you feel significantly less "compromised" now.
My friends who work in the US games industry have been sharing this around in solidarity.
Getting to and over the border isn't really the problem. The Canadian Government is currently experiencing a rightward lurch, and a part of that has included severely restricting the ability of middle class and lower to gain visa status. The laws change frequently and generally have gotten worse for us.
I am a big fan of the Twin Cities culturally.
Yeah, we have friends who went that route. One obstacle to overcome there is the difference in economy between the Rust Belt and the places you mention. My family is barely middle class in the Rust Belt but because the dollar is much more powerful here, we would take a social ladder tumble elsewhere in the stolen lands. Might be a sacrifice worth making since expatriating entirely has recently (since '23-ish) become so difficult.
Personally, I spent the Biden years unsuccessfully trying to switch careers and immigrate away from the USA/ Rust Belt. I have had little success in either, but now I understand why it was so hard for "good people" in "Germany" to get out of dodge. Did a lot of food access mutual aid when I had the time and resources, felt pretty impotent though. Having mostly recovered from the two failed attempts to improve my situation, I am trying to figure out what to do next in the New New Neo Shin Age of Monsters we find ourselves in. While the Democrats smized and handed us over "peacefully" for pogroms, territorial grabs, limitless pollution, genocides and domestic terror in the name of their sacred oligarchic democracy, I wondered if there was some other decent way forward for the sane that I was missing.
For those who do not understand the analogy, I am comparing our situation to these:
Evaporated milk is good, Dry Milk is also very useful. The Liter / Quart pre-measured packets are pretty easy to find on North America if you have access to a corpo super market or big box store.
Oh boy I can't wait to find out what the Cadburys want me to think about Mexico!
Seems to be blowback from this stuff: ‘Major Divestment Win’ – Students Say MIT has Cut Ties with Lockheed Martin Fund
The idealism of this doctoral candidate is pretty humorous. Of course the military industrial death cult recruits from MIT, that's one of their founding institutions.
Please don't willfully misinterpret. The USA was founded as and remains a fascist slavery empire. Because we are trying to describe the monster from within the monster, we are forced to use FOREIGN TERMS for the DOMESTIC MONSTER. I am not confused about the origins of fascism and slavery as it relates to "The United States" and "Germany," neither of which I view as legitimate entities.
One of the worst things about nationalism and Nazism is that Nazis can make people into Nazis before and without their consent. Non-consensual Nazis who were raised or groomed into Nazis are still a kind of Nazis.
I mean I guess it is nice to see some resistance to nazification in the media but this is pure fantasy
Fascinating. Good luck with this concept as you navigate computing. Taking a stand against the concept of computer memory is a new one for me.
Surprise this meme was another plug for retroachievements
Access comprehensive guides, tutorials, and developer resources for RetroAchievements. Learn how to enhance your retro gaming experience with custom achievements.
What's retroachievements? Basically it adds XBOX Live style achievements and global high score tables to retro emulation platforms. This added layer of social gaming and community driven accomplishment hunting really builds on the retro games emulation experience. The best part is you can get it running on pretty much any platform you emulate games on, your phone, your deck, your weird android handheld, HTPC, even your lappy-5000.
Since RA adds score and achievement tracking, those of us who game at decisively higher levels and compete for the most glorious prizes imaginable like to use it to track our games. Now is a great time to get it set up, so when the call for challengers comes to Beehaw, you can dive right in.
Here are some of the most fun achievements I have personally gotten.
Anyway, this has been anarchist propaganda, toodles
the judgy boomer vibe is fun for memes but let's remember tis the corpos who are actually wasting untold amounts of energy, not you and your 4070, friendo 😘
the level of gaming you can accomplish now at less than 100 W TDP blows me away
a lot of it is happening on old hardware!
Yeah punk. Living that 5700g life. Rocking 3700U as a daily driver, what? Yeah I have a fast graphics card, it's called a 780m you might have heard of it from can barely play Baldurs Gate 3 but it counts as playable. Gaming on integrated graphics is cool because it's a lower TDP option for the environment. Fight me. I'm over here playing 2017's greatest offerings at nearly 60fps 720p and I'm enjoying myself. Oh, Cult of the Lamb? Yes, hahaha, I get over 40 fps in Cult of the Lamb. The only other gamers who can @ are switch and xbox series s gangsters. Mortal Kombat 9? Ah, "the good one" of course.
It runs, I'm gaming on it. I don't care bro.
I love scrolling beehaw because there are no rightwing Pepe greentexts choking every other post
>After a lifetime of bounties and bloodshed, Viv is hanging up her sword for the last time.
>The battle-weary orc aims to start fresh, opening the first ever coffee shop in the city of Thune. But old and new rivals stand in the way of success -- not to mention the fact that no one has the faintest idea what coffee actually is.
>If Viv wants to put the blade behind her and make her plans a reality, she won't be able to go it alone.
>But the true rewards of the uncharted path are the travelers you meet along the way. And whether drawn together by ancient magic, flaky pastry, or a freshly brewed cup, they may become partners, family, and something deeper than she ever could have dreamed.
>"Take a break from epic battles and saving the world. Legends & Lattes is a low-stakes fantasy that delivers exactly what's advertised: a wholesome, cozy novel that feels like a warm hug. This is my new comfort read."--Genevieve Gornichec, author of The Witch's Heart
Gornichec is goofin', there are at least 4 epic battles in the series.
If you are looking for some lighter fare to dive into due to present stressors in the world, and you enjoy fantasy genre stuff, this is the book for you. So unfortunately for myself, I read both this book and the prequel already. If you have read these already, perhaps you could recommend something fun in the same vein?
A note for some readers: Some people get thrown by the "romance" tag that many have filed these under. They are tame. There are romantic plot elements, not sex scenes. Content is PG-13 and written so that the very prude can feign total ignorance.
Following is synopsis of Justus Rosenberg's book on Kobo's shop. Thanks to @ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net for reminding me of this text with your previous relevant post. The book itself is both pretty entertaining (Justus is a very good story teller AND IT'S SHORT) and you know, sobering and terrifying in that whole "witness to man-made horrors beyond all comprehension" kinda way. ___________________________________ “Thrillingly tells the story of an Eastern European Jew’s flight from the Holocaust and the years he spent fighting in the French underground.” —USA Today
An American Library in Paris Book Award “Coups de Coeur” Selection
In 1937, after witnessing a violent Nazi mob in his hometown of Danzig, a majority German city on the Baltic Sea, sixteen-year-old Justus Rosenberg was sent by his Jewish parents to Paris to finish his education in safety. Three years later, the Nazis came again, as France fell to the Germans. Alone and in danger, Justus fled Paris, heading south. A chance meeting led him to Varian Fry, an American journalist in Marseille who led a clandestine network helping thousands of men and women—including many legendary artists and intellectuals, among them Hannah Arendt, Marc Chagall, Andre Breton, and Max Ernst—escape the Nazis. With his intimate understanding of French and German culture, and fluency in several languages, including English, Justus became an invaluable member of Fry’s operation as a spy and scout.
After the Vichy government expelled Fry from France, Justus worked in Grenoble, recruiting young men and women for the Underground Army. For the next four years, he would be an essential component of the Resistance, relying on his wits and skills to survive several close calls with death. Once, he found himself in a Nazi internment camp, with his next stop Auschwitz—and yet Justus found an ingenious way to escape. He spent two years gathering intelligence, surveying German installations and troop movements on the Mediterranean. Then, after the allied invasion at Normandy in 1944, Justus became a guerrilla fighter, participating in and leading commando raids to disrupt the German retreat across France.
At the end of the Second World War, Justus emigrated to America, and built a new life. After decades teaching literature at Bard College, he now adds his own story to the library of great coming-of-age memoirs, a “gripping” chronicle of his youth in Nazi-occupied Europe, when he risked everything to stand against evil (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

The latest update video from Leon the Lobster, a cozy docu-series about a lobster rescued from the grocery store.
As of this post, Leon the Lobster is alive and appears to be recovering from dropping a claw. Sorry-not-sorry for spoilers, nobody needs to be introduced to a cool animal with a fake-out like the video's real title. Brady. You jerk. All of us have high enough blood pressure.
Wikipedia TL;DR >Oil! is a novel by Upton Sinclair, first published in 1926–27 and told as a third-person narrative, with only the opening pages written in the first person. The book was written in the context of the Harding administration's Teapot Dome Scandal and takes place in Southern California. It is a social and political satire skewering the human foibles of all its characters.
>The main character is James Arnold Ross Jr., nicknamed Bunny, son of an oil tycoon. Bunny's sympathetic feelings toward oilfield workers and socialists provoke arguments with his father throughout the story. The beginning of the novel served as a loose inspiration for the 2007 film There Will Be Blood.
My Take: Basically the TL;DR is that Oil companies have been buying politicians and stalling progress while their actions destroy the lives of untold masses forever. This book is like 100 years old, so that means it has been a big enough problem to write a whole pulpy novel about it for longer than any of us will ever live. Corporations are bad. Great characters and retro cultural obscura!
Linked below is an excellent copy by Standard Ebooks you can legally have for free if you also want to be mad about the oil industry and capitalism more broadly.
