Suggestions for my next distro

I am looking to switch to a different Linux distribution (or BSD). I currently use openSUSE Tumbleweed, which is quite nice, but I'm having issues with my USB ports and it takes a hot second to boot up.

However, the reason I'm asking here instead of going straight to DistroWatch is that my laptop has a problem. When I turn it on, it bootloops unless it's connected to power when I press the button. As such, this distribution would need to be able to handle running for weeks on end without a reboot.

I could get this repaired or replaced, but I have neither the time nor the money to spare.

So, does anyone have any suggestions? Or should I just slap Fedora Kinoite on it and call it a day?

EDIT: I went for Debian, as well as running fwupd, and it's all working now. Thanks!

Pixelfed @lemmy.world

My posts are getting unlisted, why?

I made an account on gram.social where I want to share stuff from my band to divert some traffic off of Instagram.

Everytime when I try to post a picture through the pixelfed app ot shows up as "unlisted" and not "public" even if I flag it correctly in the posting menu.

Does my new account have to get verified or is there a setting I'm missing? The account is public and you can find stuff by searching, though I think my forst lost doesn't show up in feeds or hashtags or anything else.

Cheers and have a good one!

Edit: So I opened Pixelfed on PC and got a notification that the first post needs to be approved by an human to appear as public from then on. The topic can be considered solved but I'll leave the post up for anyone being as confused as I was.

Best way to switch a headless server from WiFi to ethernet?

I have a server running Debian that has been connected to WiFi for a long time, but I have since moved it and given it a wired connection. It still seems to be using WiFi though, and in my router settings it shows up as connected through WiFi and not through ethernet.

Now I want to make sure that I can switch over from WiFi to ethernet directly from an ssh-connection so I won't have to connect a screen to get direct access.

What is my best bet here? A lot of the tools I find used for different network operations are not pre-installed, and I don't want to be installing just everything being suggested. Can I solve this by installing network-manager and using nmcli?

EDIT: I also want to disable the wireless card.

EDIT2: No eth-interface shows up when running ip link show, EDIT3: but r8169 0000:02:00.0 enp2s0: renamed from eth0 shows up in dmesg and enp2s0 shows up in ip link show, so I guess it is recongized then.

Optimum wasn’t ready to comply with law, rejected low-income man’s request twice.

::: spoiler full text When New York's law requiring $15 or $20 broadband plans for people with low incomes took effect last week, Optimum customer William O'Brien tried to sign up for the cheap Internet service. Since O'Brien is in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), he qualifies for one of the affordable plans that Internet service providers must offer New Yorkers who meet income eligibility requirements.

O'Brien has been paying Optimum $111.20 a month for broadband—$89.99 for the broadband service, $14 in equipment rental fees, a $6 "Network Enhancement Fee," and $1.21 in tax. Xbox 360 controller works, but will only properly connect if powered on during computer's sign in (either wake up from sleep or reboot)

If I turn my controller on, it won't connect. But if it's on when I turn my computer on (or restart/wake from sleep), it connects just fine. I am using the "Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows". It's possible it's actually connected but not recognized by Steam or any games, but I am not sure how to troubleshoot that directly. The Arch wiki (linked) doesn't say anything about this specifically.

I am on CachyOS.

Any ideas? <3

Update: This somehow fixed itself. I don't think I even upgraded or anything since it was a problem.

Hamas’s strategic survival drives "Israel" crazy | The Cradle

By harnessing its institutional strength, field adaptability, and psychological tactics, Hamas masterfully turned Gaza's destruction into a display of resilience, achieving both symbolic and tactical gains while preventing Israel from claiming any political victory.

Hamas’s strategic survival drives Israel crazy

The release of three Israeli female prisoners in Gaza by Hamas’s military wing, the Qassam Brigades, in exchange for 90 Palestinian detainees, triggered a media frenzy in the occupation state.

The dramatic “scene” – fighters emerging amidst the ruins of war, surrounded by a jubilant crowd – undermined official Israeli narratives about the war, its goals, and the treatment of Israeli captives. It raised a sobering question for Israelis: What were we doing in Gaza for 15 months?

The Qassam Brigades orchestrated every detail of the event to maximize impact. From the branded gift bags to the polished uniforms of the fighters, the display exuded calculated precision. A military procession was even held in Saraya Square – an area heavily besieged by

Hey everyone, it's me again. I'm now on NGINX, surprisingly simple, not here with a webserver issue today though, rather a nextcloud specific issue. I removed my last post about migrating from Apache to Caddy after multiple users pointed out security issues with what I was sharing, as well as suggesting caddy would be unable to meet my complex hosting needs. Thank you, if that was you.

During the NGINX setup which has gone shockingly smoothly I moved all of my site root directories from /usr/local/apache2/secure to /var/www/

Everything so far has moved over nicely... that is until nextcloud.

Shows and TV @lemm.ee

Sweet and somber, recently finished the shows Miss Night and Day and Gap-Dong

Lately I've been bouncing between dark and so sweet they'll make you sick shows, with my latest watches being a good example of this.

Gap-Dong's a Korean thriller/mystery about an old unsolved serial murder case that begins to stir again with a new set of copycat murders. A few of the main characters are people that were involved with the original case and have been determined to solve it. If you're into this genre, it's okay but I wouldn't say it's great.

I think the most interesting element of it may be seeing how they try to grapple with the original murderer and their copycat that's appeared 20 years later.

It was enjoyable enough to keep me watching, and only a few episodes really seemed to drag to me.

Miss Night and Day is oddly enough a little similar to Gap-Dong, in that there's an unsolved case involved, but it's a romance comedy instead of thriller. Mainly it's about a woman th

swap partition problems

Hello everybody! here's the problem: In my EndeavourOS laptop I had a /swapfile, but couldn't take snapshots with snapper because of it (if I understood correctly). So, I created a 16Gb swap partition using GParted from a live USB. Then, I edited /etc/fstab to remove the line about the swapfile and to add the newly created swap partition:

 undefined

UUID=506d48e6-1cc0-4136-ba55-6f2f187bcdb1   swap           swap    defaults   0 0
# /swapfile none swap sw 0 0

I took the UUID from

 sh

$ sudo blkid
/dev/nvme0n1p3: LABEL="swap" UUID="506d48e6-1cc0-4136-ba55-6f2f187bcdb1" TYPE="swap" PARTLABEL="SWAP" PARTUUID="b4543e4e-4623-4317-99aa-086b0e62836e"
...

if I run sudo swapon -a it gets enabled correctly and it all works fine. The problem however is that when I reboot the machine, it gets stuck in the systemd screen saying "a job is running for /dev/disk/etc..." forever, and the only way I have to log in is to boot from a live

Can't renew cert on a self-hosted lemmy instance D:

EDIT: Thanks everyone for your time and responses. To break as little as possible attempting to fix this I've opted to go with ZeroSSL's DNS process to acquire a new cert. Fixing wrongly set environment variable in Flatseal (when Flatseal won't run)?

SOLVED: BananaTrifleViolin's post contains the solution.

Flatseal won't start by itself anymore, which is a known issue. I got it running by running

 undefined

GSK_RENDERER=gl com.github.tchx84.Flatseal

and inspired by a response in the above linked issue, I wanted to add GSK_RENDERER=gl as a variable in Flatseal so I could open it without having to manually run this in the terminal.

However, I seem to have screwed that up, and written GSK_RENDERER=ng instead, because the application still won't run, and now I get the following output anytime I try to open it by the method above:

 undefined

(com.github.tchx84.Flatseal:2): Gsk-WARNING **: 22:09:54.997: Unrecognized renderer "ng". Try GSK_RENDERER=help

Bazzite: Steam won't launch games from ext4 secondary drive

I finally took the time to move my gaming rig to Bazzite because I don't boot it that often, and because I don't want to spend half the little time I have for gaming doing updates and maintenance.

Most of my games are on an ext4-formatted secondary drive. Note: They worked perfectly on Manjaro and Nobara, the previous distros I used on this machine.

They are recognized by Steam, I can install and uninstall games just fine, it's just that... they don't launch. At all. Native or Proton. Like if I was on an exFAT partition. The "Launching" button switches back to "Play" almost instantly. If I move a game to my main home partition, it launches fine.

Has anyone encountered this issue before?

Where/how could I get detailed logs to try and pinpoint the issue?

Thanks!

Edit: Solved! The issue was with fstab configuration, always specify exec AFTER users, despite the doc telling you that order doesn't matter ;)

Wrong fstab entry :

No Stupid Questions @lemmy.world

Is anyone able to identify this DE (desktop environment) displayed on the tablet?

I've been trying to find it for a week now but I don't seem to have any luck so far. I had seen a video about it a couple years back from a brittish YouTuber who mainly reviews DEs, although his name slipped my mind.

It is a very minimalist UI with not much customisation apart from dock size, transparency and positioning, it is niche and not an extension or customisation of another DE, and I believe it may still be in beta, although I'm unsure.

Also I apologise for the image quality, it was the only one I could find. If anyone can identify it I would really appreciate it, although I understand if you are unable, thanks.

EDIT: Also I checked if it was Orion OS or other OS names in the text but none of them matched.

How do I prevent nvidia gpu from downclocking in Witcher 3?

Playing modded Witcher 3 through proton. After dying and loading the last save (and perodically while playing) gpu clocks drop such that the framerate is barely above 60 (and very stuttery). Tried enabling framegen, same thing but it drops to 70 ish. It sometimes goes back to normal if I alt tab out and back, but that gets annoying when playing with a controller (especially if it happens in the middle of combat).

I can see the gpu clock dropping and going back up in system monitor. This doesn't happen with any other game. Any advice?

I've been a user of Librewolf for a about a year now, and it's always served me pretty well as a nice easy way to get a hardened Arkenfox Firefox.

However, recently I was curious why Librewolf wasn't recommended on PrivacyGuides, and took a look through their reasoning on their forum. That thread spans multiple years, and for the most part I thought their reasons for not including it were a bit unfair, especially after Librewolf started offering automatic updates.

But towards the end of that thread in October, a Privacy guide team member posted a link to the Arkenfox github issue tracker, where a Librewolf team member reveals how the project appeared to have lost steam after a critical member left, and they are [struggling to keep it up to date](https://github.com/arkenfo
