I just wanted to say, as someone who has been reluctant to try and convert his friends and family to alternative communications platforms for years due to perceived shortcomings with all alternatives, I think SimpleX might just be good enough.

Agreed, I'm very excited. The weakness of existing privacy-focused chat protocols has been they either rely on servers that are central points of failure, or they're peer-to-peer which means they expose your IP address to the person you're chatting with.
SimpleX makes the cost of switching servers low, and hopefully in the future they'll be able to add a mechanism to automatically recover when a server goes down using redundant connections.
