I have a bunch of questions: Whats the best way to get this platform's feed to compete with reddit?

Whats the best way to take action for me as a single user? What kind of posts should I focus on making? Ive heard of fetching reddit posts, maybe I could do that if theres like an easy process to do so, I'd happily feed some communities I like with posts from the silicon valley mafia platform to this platform!

Also whats the name of this platform? I registered under feddit org, is the umbrella term called fediverse? Accroding to wiki then this(fediverse) should be linked to platforms like pixelfed and mastadon too, is it? How do I see content from them or in what way are these platforms interlinked with this reddit styled one?

  • More stuff that isn't memes, news and politics. Like, apparently there's two people on this whole platform watching Harley Quinn (or at least leaving a comment about it in the discussion thread). Pretty much everything that isn't memes, news or politics is still dead around here. Except for pro wrestling somehow.

What I'm still missing from Reddit is actual discussion of the forms of entertainment that I enjoy. I even tried that thread about "what music are you listening to" that pops up in casual conversation once or twice but no one gives a fuck, not even the OP of those threads bothers going through and giving an up arrow to people that have replied. And no one interacts with any replies either, so might as well be on Facebook for that kind of 'discussion'.

I'm also missing the haircare and skincare type subreddits. There were a lot of valuable resources and it was nice having a place for the occasional stupid questions. Also fashion / style type subreddits. I still think those would do great around here with LemmyNSFW mostly kept separate from everything else, so it would help keep the one handed browsers away. Although I still maintain that a big barrier for certain people in this regard is no posting to your own profile.

But yeah, there is lots and lots of stuff that this platform still needs. Memes, news and politics are the first things you'll get on every platform. Now I just wish there was more than that.

    • !WomensStuff@lazysoci.al started recently, hopefully that will help with other topics.

!Television@lemm.ee and !movies@lemm.ee are quite active, a recent thread on !movies@lemm.ee made it to 300 comments

Memes, news and politics are the first things you’ll get on every platform. Now I just wish there was more than that.

Trying to mitigate that with the pinned post on !communitypromo@lemmy.ca

      • Yeah, as much as I support there being women only spaces here, especially around here where it seems like the only way that women are going to be able to have any spaces here is by brute force, I am unfortunately not a woman. And I don't want to invade or force my way in. So just to repeat, I absolutely support and respect there being communities where women can mingle with each other without asshole men popping up every five minutes to shit on them.

What I'm hoping for is that once communities like !WomensStuff@lazysoci.al are able to get a foothold and thrive and more women are actually comfortable around here, we'll start seeing more communities that deal with things like skin and haircare and jewelry and thrifting and cool styles and shit. Because clearly most men aren't interested or else those sorts of communities would be popping up already. So this place needs more of a woman's touch first lol.

Not complaining or being sour or anything. I have faith that it'll get to the point where these communities don't need to be gendered anymore but I've seen the way people around here can be so I also think it's necessary for now.

      • "Women's Stuff" is such a fucking brain-dead name for content about skincare and hair. I'm a man, yet I also have skin and (some) hair.

Is there a community like /r/skincareaddiction? That place was (probs still is tbh) the bomb for affordable/effective products, honest product reviews, and evidence-based recommendations from cosmetologist members.

    • Yeah this is where I'm coming from. I ofc don't like the evolution of reddit and didn't want anything in that sense.

But the traction in casual themes seems lacking. Like ofc it will be less and smaller. But I feel like some branches are completely missing while others seem so dry.

That's the thing being a small community with a direct monopoly. The unique selling point (USP) needs to be so clear for users.

But I think we should keep repeating these posts, even if there's no traction. We are laying the ground work in that sense. And one person reacting to the fifth post is what it's all about. It's the content to be put out there.

So I think you succeeded with your music thread! It's just the expectation is on the wrong metric here, keep going. WILLYA?

That's where I'm coming from with my fetching topic. Not because I like the current reddit, but because subs like Harley quinn need stuff for browsing majority to interact with!

  • Whats the best way to take action for me as a single user?

That's a tough question, because a lot of us explicitly don't want this to become reddit, or as large as reddit (I am of this opinion myself). If you're looking for things like a community for the city you live in, I think that's far better served by creating a regional instance. Midwest.social is a good example of that, as is yall.theatl.social, an Atlanta-focused instance.

What kind of posts should I focus on making?

Whatever you want to make, the world (and the fediverse) is your oyster.

Ive heard of fetching reddit posts, maybe I could do that if theres like an easy process to do so, I’d happily feed some communities I like with posts from the silicon valley mafia platform to this platform!

Once again, a lot of us would prefer to not have that but have original content and discussions. Others may feel differently, however this is certainly my own opinion.

Also whats the name of this platform?

Lemmy. (At least for feddit.org, specifically)

I registered under feddit org, is the umbrella term called fediverse?

Yes, it is called the fediverse.

Accroding to wiki then this(fediverse) should be linked to platforms like pixelfed and mastadon too, is it?

Technically, yes, they all run on an underlying architecture called ActivityPub. Lemmy and Mastadon can see each other, but most people don't browse between them that way because of how differently they work. Lemmy posts look weird on Mastodon and vice versa. Mastodon doesn't have the same kind of threaded conversations, it's conversation trees are like Twitters. I, for example, have a different Mastodon (Sharkey) account and Lemmy account because it's easier for me to have them be separate entities even though they can technically connect. Many Lemmy instances host similar Mastodon instances, like my instance lemmy.blahaj.zone has a Mastodon instance at blahaj.zone. The aforementioned yall.theatl.social has a Mastodon instance at theatl.social.

How do I see content from them or in what way are these platforms interlinked with this reddit styled one?

That one I can't answer because I haven't tried it myself.

But here's a link I did a quick search for that seems to have instructions on how you can. I haven't tried it myself so your mileage may vary.

    • Thank you (and all the different responses) very much for the detailed explanations!!!

EDIT: so for extra stupid people like me: how do I differentiate between feddit and lemmy and all the subs?

  • Accroding to wiki then this(fediverse) should be linked to platforms like pixelfed and mastadon too, is it? How do I see content from them or in what way are these platforms interlinked with this reddit styled one?

As this has not been answered yet: Mastodon treats lemmy-groups as users, so you can see a user @nostupidquestions@lemmy.world boosting your question on mastodon. Your profile yourself looks like any mastodon profile on mastodon. However, your post contains only the title and a link to it:

(Currently, I see no lemmy answers and boosts to your question, which I believe has to do with federation - I had to open your post by opening the link to it in mastodon, because neither this community nor your profile were "known" by my mastodon instance before).

I could now interact with your post from mastodon by replying to it, which would then show up here (usually obvious from the reply starting with tagging your username, which is how a reply on mastodon looks like).

Furthermore, you can use mastodon to post in this community by tagging the community profile (in the @nostupidquestions@lemmy.world format) in your toot. The first line of your toot is handled as the title of the lemmy post.

I have no knowledge of how federation between lemmy and pixelfed/peertube etc works, but federation between these and mastodon works pretty good - mastodon posts with pictures pretty much look like native pixelfed posts and vice versa, and peertube videos can be watched and commented easily from mastodon. The condition js that they are federated to the respective servers.

  • The only good thing Lemmy lacks that Reddit has are user numbers (and it's probably controversial to say that's a good thing; I know I personally don't want to see another fun place suffer from Eternal September). Tell your friends about it, get more users on Lemmy.

    • What User numbers are we talking? Of each sub/platform? Or like total? Because I can saw how many members a sub on feddit has for example

  • lemmy is a software platform that is the 'threads'(ie,reddit) arm of the network of servers we call the 'fediverse'. mastodon/universeodon/pixelfed are the 'microblog' (ie, twitter) arm of the fediverse. some platforms can interact with both sides.. mastodon for example can push posts into lemmy even though lemmy cannot follow mastodon users.

some platforms can do both, right now, like mbin (ex: https://moist.catsweat.com/).

some platforms are working on providing both, i believe pixelfed is adding 'thread' support sometime later.

we need users more than posts. but its a chicken and egg thing.. people wont come if theres no content and we need people for the content.

what we really need are subs from reddit moving their entire community to a lemmy/mbin community.

    • Exactly, that's why I what I tried saying. Chicken and egg, I want to help with both within my reach

But most that migrate won't stick unless they get a unique selling point(USP) out of it.

And I see it as a non silicon valley possessed platform, that has even more options to configure the experience to your liking(ie ui skins, at least for me there's a couple through feddit)

But also there needs to be a at least some daily posts on most subs for new people to interact with. Most just browse and if there's nothing to browse (or if it's too hidden), most will just switch back again sooner or later.

But I'm talking with a day of experience.. I still haven't seen the light of posts yet I feel like
