!Formula1@Lemmy.World Rules

Hi Everyone,

This is the first real meta post here on !formula1@lemmy.world, the community has grown very quickly and there is great engagement on race weekends. We are the biggest F1 sub on Lemmy and it's time to start thinking about how we want this community to run.

First up, to introduce the mod team, alongside myself we now have @wes@lemmy.world and @bwoah@lemmy.world. Wes has been responsible for posting all of the discussion threads for practice sessions, quali and races, and Bwoah is active everyday posting new interesting new content and analysis, big thanks to both of them they have really helped to grow the sub.

Moving forwards; we need some basic rules to keep the sub running smoothly, as a mod team we have 3 that are important to us;

- Be respectful to everyone; drivers, lemmings, redditors etc
This is a welcoming community, and that means being respectful to everyone inside and outside of it. While we understand there are tense moments, it doesn't mean anyone needs to resort to name calling or being derogatory. No hate speech of any kind. That doesn't mean you can't call out a driver or a team for mistakes, but do it in a constructive and friendly way.

- No gambling, crypto or NFTs
There is a wealth of evidence that shows the impact of gambling advertising on everyone, in particular children and those who have suffered from gambling disorder, including increasing intent to gamble. Members of this community should not be exposed to or encouraged to gamble, or partake in risky behaviours that could result in financial loss.

- Spoilers are allowed
Spoilers are a contentious issue, but the majority of fans are watching the race live and are excited about results. For those of use that can't follow every practice and qualifying session, having access to results immediately is better than trawling the web to see what happened. While sometimes it isn't possible to watch a race live, avoiding social media and news sites until you are caught up is something a lot of us are used to, and is the only guaranteed way to avoid spoilers which would be very hard to moderate.

Now, we want some community feedback and suggestions on the following;

- websites that force login or have a paywall When users post content from a website that isn't openly accessible, how should that be handled? A non-editorialised summary or copy of the article in the comments?

- Non English articles
How should the community handle non English articles? Google translate? Fan translations? No translations?

- Social Media Content
Should social media content be linked to, or screenshotted, or both? Many people don't have accounts on instagram, twitter, facebook, and don't want to sign up to read a single comment. Should users credit the original poster in the title eg [Photographer - Lemmy.world]

I have no horse in the race regarding spoilers since I tend to avoid news and social media completely when the time zone prevents me from watching live. I do however, have some feedback about the post-race thread, anyway.
Regardless of allowing spoilers or not, I feel naming the official sticky post race thread something like "GP X Post-Race Discussion" would be more appropriate and inviting for conversation than "Max Verstappen Wins GP X".
I know it's a small thing, but this season especially I don't have that much to say about Max winning another one and it would be clearer that the thread is supposed to be used for general post race talk if it had a more open general name.
Perhaps that's just me.
- It's not just you! I would really appreciate naming the post-race thread in a way that doesn't show the race winner up front.
  
  Also makes it much easier to find past discussion posts if they all follow the same naming format.
- Agreed on the “post race discussion” thread, it is a more fitting title, and is a step towards accommodating the no-spoiler club.
  Things like Lando destroying the trophy of Max however should just be postable.

How should the community handle non English articles? Google translate? Fan translations? No translations?
On reddit, posters used to provide an English translation created by deepl.com, which is quite good.
- Indeed. For example a Tweet from Eric van Haren is displayed in Dutch, but the tiltle is translated with the text in English. That way, you still keep the authenticity of the message, and everyone can read it.

Thanks for the work you guys are putting in!
I don't care about spoilers and think that spending effort policing that is wasted. People who don't want spoilers simply need to avoid social media. I dislike titles such as "Spa winner says it was harder than it looks" Just say it's Verstappen in the title, it's more interesting and easier to determine if you want to actually read the post or participate in its' discussion.
Concerning your questions:
I personally dislike paywalled articled but there is good content behind those articles and it's only fair to also give attention to those sites because otherwise only clickbait will be left. Posting the full content sounds like a long term problem with copyright. A short summary to get a discussion going sounds plenty good.
I'm fine with non English links, provide a title tranlsation and I'll see if want to read it and find a translation if it's a language I don't speak. (Speaking Dutch in the Verstappen era is rather fun ofcourse)
Personally I would prefer an image of the social meda post as the main thing, with perhaps a link to the source below it. Not the other way around. But as long as an image is supplied so I don't need to go to that social media thing I'm happy.

Ideally I think the original language + a DeepL style translation would be best. That way if the translation doesn't sound right then people can still grab the original text and try a different translation service or ask a native speaker for clarification
Social Media Content
I'd prefer a screenshot to avoid login-walls, also sometimes the original content gets deleted so this preserves it. a link to the original in the post body or a comment would be nice though in the event people want to browse to it and favorite/share it, etc.

Is there a way to hide the results in a spoiler blur type thing (like nsfw) or is that more constructed through Memmy, voyager and other apps.
More than once I’ve accidentally seen the results on here before I’ve seen the race.
It’s made me consider unsubbing which I’d prefer not to do but I will if the spoilers keep happening.
- My strategy on Reddit, which worked very well there but I’ve been too lazy so far to recreate here, was to create separate accounts. I had one account that just followed f1 stuff, and another one that followed all my general content and had all the f1 subs explicitly blocked. That way I have to actively choose to switch over to my f1 account if I want to see f1 content, which I just wouldn’t do until I’d seen the race.
  A lot of the lemmy apps, like voyager and Memmy, already have good support for account switching, so I highly recommend this strategy if watching the race later is a regular occurrence for you. I’m sure eventually I’ll bother to do this myself.
  Alternatively, whenever the analogous multireddit feature gets implemented in lemmy, that could allow you to do effectively the same thing with one account. But not yet, unfortunately.

Would agree with others that it's more useful to have the text of articles pasted either in the post body or the comments along with the link and that social media type posts should include a screenshot with an accompanying link.
Also will the posting of short highlight clips be allowed? I always found the streamable links useful on the old site.
- Clips are welcome currently, it does take some effort to produce them so many people seem to only make them for a few races or a season and then drop out.

From what I've seen, paywalled articles are linked in the post and a transcript is provided in the comments.
Social media I prefer a screenshot and text provided accompanied with the url.

I would say either both or screenshotted + text transcription for visually impaired lemmings.

The text transcription would help. Another solution would be linking to alternative front-ends like Nitter for ~~Twitter~~ X but they could end up broken by an update or abandoned like Bibliogram.

Yeah, when I'm busy on a race week-ends I usually unfollow every Formula 1 communities and follow them once I watched the race, just like I did on Reddit.

I don’t contribute much as I’m a newer fan still building my knowledge but I love that this place is here.
My thoughts on your questions; copy the article contents, whatever translation but mention the method, screenshots of social media.

Spoilers are allowed and even live replays would be amazing like we used to have back in the day on reddit, you could tag guys and get replays in like 5mins. Stay off social if you don't want to catch live news.
Paywall articles not allowed... unless content is posted as a comment by OP.
International articles allowed, preferably with translation.

Thanks mod team - really good to see an engaged and thoughtful team at work building our community.
Pay wall - I think this is tricky as, by avoiding paywalls, the original author is not getting the fruits of their work, however in the interests of free information then maybe a summary would be the best balance? - Maybe using a large language model to summarise and then in the comments the user could post 'highlights' they think are important?
Non English articles - I think until we are a bigger community sharing a Google translate version would be the best solution, but maybe with the proviso that any native speakers or people who are confident in that language are encouraged to comment on any inaccuracies in the text or clarifications.
Social media - this is a tricky one as, again, I think it's important for the original author to see some engagement as a result of their (e.g.) photo. Including the original poster and location in the title and a link to the source in the comments seems like it would be a good middle ground.

Spoilers being allowed is a dumb and bad rule. It takes zero effort to not have spoilers in titles and it has a measurable harmful impact on users. I’m not going to be joining and blocking an instance every weekend just because I have to watch a race a few hours later than most people usually.
- !formula1@lemmy.ml has a rule about no spoilers in post titles. I think we're probably better off blocking this community and joining that one.

- No spoilers and no spoilers in titles aren't mutually exclusive, I am fine with spoilers being posted but if avoidable having a title that's more generic especially for the Sundays of and Mondays after a grand prix.
  But as the post yesterday and this thread are showing the community here on world doesn't seem to think you can to both or doesn't care so seems like the other community on ml is for me.
- Dude rule one is literally be respectful. Calling the mods dumb and bad isn't being respectful.

They are being openly hostile to users like me and the scores of users that are time zone or otherwise constrained to watching a race not live. 3. There’s no reason to write a screed about why it’s dumb and bad. Those have been written before. They know what they’re doing. I’m here to voice my disapproval, they’re beyond convincing, as they’ve made clear.
- Agreed. It takes zero effort to have a "Belgium Grand Prix official discussion" post which doesn't alienate people who live in different time zones.
  Also, the "don't look at this instance" argument doesn't work. Even if I don't subscribe, the posts still make their way to the All feed.. I don't want to block the community but, with spoilers, I feel like it's necessary.
  
  "2017 Singapore GP Results Discussion" threads do not rise to 'All'. I'm quite involved into F1 but even then I seldom engage with generic threads.
  Be honest, you don't either, you're more likely to interact with a "Hamilton wins 2017 Singapore GP after 1st lap crash between Vettel, Verstappen, and Raikkonen". And that's why it's these threads and not stickied ones make it to All.
  Because I'm avoiding work at the moment, I went to the old site, sorted by top 'this week' and there were 137 threads rated higher than the top official discussion (post-quali if you're curious). Most of the top ones included spoilers.
  So if we were to not allow spoilers we'd severely restrict discussion, in particular among less hardcore fans.
  I have a separate app which has F1, MotoGP communities blocked, and keywords filtered. I use it on race weekends when I can't watch live. If you want to engage with this community, watch the race live, otherwise avoid it, we're here to interact with other F1 fans when the interest is highest - during the race weekends.
