I just want to recommend my own developed app Mensinator. Its a private period tracker where all data stays on your phone. Nothing is sent anywhere, no one gets your data and there is no registration required. No personal data is collected externally what so ever!
The app is free with no ads. It's available in ten languages right now and is in active development. It's an open source project so code is available on github and everyone who wants to contribute are welcome to do so.
Don't give American corporations such as Flo access to your sensitive data. What happens if they get hacked or regulated to give other people access. When "they" can see that you are late on your period... No thanks.
App is available on GooglePlay and FDroid.

But even so, FOSS apps are often times the only viable option for me these days because they're usually spared from all the BS most playstore apps are riddled with.
Stuff like overpriced subscriptions, massive amounts of ads, 'features' like Ai integration, dubious permissions like calculators that want to make phone calls, forced account creation, pointless social media integration, EULAs that signs over your firstborn, psychological manipulation to literally get you addicted to an app and so on.
The playstore itself isn't exactly a well-designed, either.
When looking for an app, I would often go through like 10 apps on the playstore, and every last one of them would be utterly unusable for one reason or another, even the ones with 5-star ratings.

The original was posted on /r/fossdroid by /u/bee077 on 2024-10-25 01:10:36+00:00. *** I have been down the rabbit hole of reading all the posts about the "best FOSS alternatives for system apps," I realized many options are outdated or just not user-friendly. So, I’m sharing my straightforward approach to de-Googling my phone and swapping out system apps for FOSS alternatives.
🚨 Heads Up: You’ll need your PC and a phone cable to uninstall system apps.
My Approach ===========
I remove all Google apps and some built-in system apps:
- Phone
- Contacts
- Messages (SMS)
- Gallery
- Browser
- Video Player
- Music Player
- Notes
- Radio
- Galaxy Store
- Keyboard
- System Cleaner
👉 Important: Please read this entire post before you start applying stuff. Also, my approach can easily be personalized to fit your needs.
Step 1: Install F-Droid =======================
First, grab F-Droid: Download F-Droid ✅. This will serve as your app hub to replace the default options.
Recommended FOSS Apps to have at the ready: ===========================================
- Keyboard: FlorisBoard 💡 Setup is straightforward, but settings can be tricky. Check out my preferred settings (Rule 10, dm if you want it) for dark mode and privacy.
- File Manager: Material Files
- Browser: Mull
Step 2: Remove Bloatware ========================
Now, let’s tackle the bloatware using ADB. Check out this step-by-step guide (Rule 10, dm if you want it) to get started.
Install the necessary ADB files.
Use App Manager to find package names of apps you want to uninstall. Download App Manager.
There’s an app with the same name that simplifies this process: you can use Aurora Store to obtain it.
After installing the app, follow these steps:
- Open the app.
- Long press the first app in the list.
- At the top, you’ll see a number indicating installed apps (like "1/200"). Click on that.
- Select "Select All Apps."
- Tap the Share button. Under "What to share?", choose Package names.
- Select an app to share the list with.
Now that you have the app list, you can determine what to keep, disable, or uninstall. Exercise caution when uninstalling apps, some are critical for system functionality.
Here are resources detailing safe apps to remove:
- Reddit: Ultimate Samsung OneUI Debloat & Privacy
- Hackerztrickz: List of Samsung Bloatware Safe to Remove (Rule 10, dm if you want it)
- MiniTool: List of Samsung Bloatware Safe to Remove (Rule 10, dm if you want it)
Step 3: Install FOSS Alternatives =================================
Once you've removed bloatware, here are my top FOSS app replacements:
Play Store Alternative:
- ⬇️ F-Droid A repository of free and open-source Android apps. It allows you to browse, install, and update apps with a focus on privacy. 💡 After installing, add these repositories:
- IzzyOnDroid F-Droid Repository (large collection of FOSS apps)
- Guardian Project Official App Repository (to get TOR browser and other apps)
- DivestOS Official (has DivestOS's FOSS apps)
- Kali Nethunter (optional, has a collection of penetration testing apps)
- FUTO Repo (has Grayjay a YouTube alternative)
- ⬇️ Aurora Store An unofficial FOSS client to Google Play with a sleek design that prioritizes user privacy.
- ⬇️ Obtainium An app for managing and updating other Android apps directly from their source. 💡 Check out the wiki for advanced options on using the app.
💡 How to Add or Download an App on Obtainium?
There are two simple methods to add and download apps using Obtainium:
Method 1: Using a Release Link
- Open Obtainium and click Add App (you’ll find this option at the bottom or top of the screen).
- In the App Source URL field, paste the "Releases" link of the app you want to install.
- Click Add and wait for confirmation.
- Once confirmed, click Install to complete the process.
Example "Releases" link of Tubular:
https://github.com/polymorphicshade/Tubular/releases
Method 2: Using GitHub Starred Repos
Sign up or log in to your GitHub account, then star the repository of the app(s) you want.
Open Obtainium and go to Import/Export (located at the bottom or top of the screen).
Select Import GitHub Starred Repos, and enter your GitHub username (any public username works).
Obtainium will load all your starred repos by default. You can choose the specific ones you want to import.
Click Select and wait for confirmation.
Finally, go to Apps (bottom of the screen), choose your desired app, and click Install.
Optional: Install ⬇️ OctoDroid A GitHub client for Android that simplifies browsing repos and checking releases.
Streaming Alternatives ======================
- ⬇️ Aniyomi (it requires a repo link) A feature-rich app for streaming and downloading anime, offering an extensive catalog.
- ⬇️ CloudStream (it requires a repo link) A media streaming app that provides access to various sources for TV shows and movies.
- ⬇️ Mirarr FOSS Movies/Shows App.
Privacy-Focused Browsers ========================
- ⬇️ Mull A secure browser based on Firefox that emphasizes privacy and offers extensive customization options.
- ⬇️ Tor Browser An anonymizing browser that allows you to browse the web privately by routing your connection through the Tor network.
- Brave A secure web browser with a built-in ad blocker that prevents tracking, and optimized for mobile data and battery life savings.
- ⬇️ Rethink: DNS + Firewall An open-source DNS-based firewall to help protect your privacy online. 💡 For settings, use my go-to config (Rule 10, dm if you want it) and remember to exclude Aurora Store from DNS rules.
Security Tools ==============
- ⬇️ KeePassDX A secure, open-source password manager that stores your passwords in an encrypted database.
- ⬇️ Privacy Indicator Notifies you whenever a third-party app accesses your camera or microphone, enhancing your privacy.
- ⬇️ URLCheck A simple tool for checking the safety of URLs before you click on them.
Music and Media ===============
- ⬇️ xManager An app that modifies the Spotify app to remove ads, plus it supports lyrics, and allow background play.
- ⬇️ Metro - Music Player A beautiful music player with a Material Design interface and easy navigation.
- ⬇️ VLC A versatile media player that supports a wide range of audio and video formats.
Google App Alternatives =======================
- ⬇️ K-9 Mail An open-source email client that supports multiple accounts and is customizable.
- ⬇️ ente A fully open-source, end-to-end encrypted alternative to Google Photos for secure photo storage.
- ⬇️ Organic Maps An open-source map application that provides offline maps and navigation.
- ⬇️ GMaps WV A simple wrapper for Google Maps that allows you to use the web version without the app.
- ⬇️ Tubular A fork of NewPipe that implements SponsorBlock and ReturnYouTubeDislike.
System App Alternatives =======================
- ⬇️ FlorisBoard A customizable keyboard app focusing on user privacy and a great typing experience. 💡 Use m... *** Content cut off. Read original on https://old.reddit.com/r/fossdroid/comments/1gbii99/degoogling_your_phone_a_guide_to_foss_alternatives/

Anyways, here are some open source apps I use. (All from Droid-ify)
---
• CapyReader - An RSS app. Save url links of website who write articles. And you can read them all here like news.
• AniHyou & Migu - App to watch Anime (links to AniList account)
• Kotatsu - App to read Manga & Hentai.
• TachiJ2k - App to read Manga & Hentai.
• Cromite - Browser
• NotesNook - Notes app. Platforms on Android, Linux, Windows & Web browsers. Access anywhere!
• Easy Notes - Simpler Note app.
• XeonJia - A game. Kinda like RPG puzzles. Remember those Pokemon games where we enter a gym, and have to slide around to get to the gym leader. Imagine that, but an entire game where you play something like Link from Legend of Zelda.
• GrayJay - Client to watch videos from popular sites (great alternative, definitely download this)
• Metro Music Player.
• Key Mapper - Remap your physical buttons. So pressing them in certain ways does something else. (So my power button is broken. I use the volume up button to lock & unlock my phone now.)
• Windscribe VPN (their reddit dev team are great and funny as well. Wholesome too)
• Iconify & SystemUI Tuner - modify Android. Needs root.
• Cirno & Hail & SuperFreezZ app stopper - Freezes apps
• Fossify Suite & You Suite & Proton Suite - A set of basic apps
• Alga - Developers Toolbox
• MatLog Libre & LogFox - Log Cat so I can give reports to Custom ROM developers and help them.
• Enforce Dose & Private DNS Quick Toggle - does what it says. Simple app.
• Warden - Manage Android app permissions
• Organic Maps - Map app
• HeliBoard - Keyboard
• Image Toolbox
• WhatSave - App that helps for a certain messaging platform.
• Immich - Photos app & cloud storage.
• aShellYou - ADB app that does adb commands easily. Need root.
• Rain - Weather app (cute AF, but never seemed to properly tell me when it's actually gonna rain.)
• MaterialOS - An icon pack. (They ought to mention that in the app name, the letters OS threw me off)
• Droid-ify - F-droid app, but better looking.
• ReThink DNS - DNS app.
• DiskUsage - App to analyse your phone's storage and what is filling it. (OMFG This is such an amazing app, a must-have to be installed. I downloaded it like maybe 10 years ago? Still use it)
---
Ofcourse there are tons more but they are popular and you already know about them.
• SyncThing, NextCloud, Termux, BreezyWeather, Bromite, Tutamail, Obtainium, Tusky, Easter Eggs
---
Anyways, I just wanted to say Thank you for making these great apps from the bottom of my heart. I'm always on the lookout for more.
If noone usually mentions your app on Reddit App Lists. Please remember. I use them. All the time. Thank you so much!
Hoping to one day find Open source apps for other simple but proprietary apps I use too one day.
Anyways. Thank you! Developers! For your apps!
Love ya!

So clients would need to schedule syncs regularily for changes on calendar, contacts, tasks, files, etc when using WebDAV or CalDAV/CardDAV.
There is a Standard in the works by the team behind the DAVx⁵ (Android sync app).
Project on Github:
The team on DAVx5 just announced that it's been implemented to a certain extent now into u/Nextcloud (activate the app dav\_push) and DAVx⁵ (version >4.4.2) now and it already works and can be used publically in a first Alpha version. You can use u/UnifiedPush to receive events and tasks almost instantly on your Android now, which is super cool. No need to wait for scheduled syncs. FCM will also be supported as well as it will be extended to CardDAV address books and Files (WebDAV)
The tutorial shows the few steps you need to do:
It's hard work to bringt that to life but the team is making constant progress.

Using open source knowing them wouldnbe safer. If an app exists on F-droid than let me know. Thank you...
