I live in a city center in Norway. Grocery stores surround me. Several within a few blocks. Maybe moving soon to a rural area where the closest will probably be 10 minutes via bus. But still not too shabby.

True, we stack old technologies on top of older technologies, and somewhere at the bottom, there is z/OS with COBOL running. A young person right now learning COBOL has a secure future with big paychecks.

Yes, but connotatively it is just a marker of privilege. Especially here, since what we’re talking about is immigration, not temporary work.

I went to Norway. Big recommend. That said, I refuse to call myself an expat or use the term expatriate. I am an immigrant. I think it is weird that white westerners get a special word and everybody else are filthy immigrants.

Some wisdom my dad shared with me decades ago: when you’ve lost everything and must rebuild, the rebuild is ALWAYS better. As a programmer for a very long time who has done what you did, I have found this to be true. So there is your silver lining.

The negativity here really goes to show that even much of the left isn’t class conscious yet.

I got a privacy update for Gmail tools too. It used to be to enable smart tools you needed to allow google to read your email. That does stuff like automatically add calendar events for flights and such.

Now you must also allow the email to be read by their AI services too. I can’t recall precisely how it was worded, but it was an easy decision to keep the “smart” features off.

I mean, I really just use Gmail as the email address I give to sign up for sites and such, but would be good just not to have it one day.
