  • I honestly think it stills explains it pretty well. Most casual users will not download a specific client and will be fine with the whole idea of an instance being tied to its user interface. It still explains pretty well that it doesn't largely matter what instance you sign up for and that any instance can talk to (mostly) any other instance, just like with email.

So yea, I still think it's a good analogy. It's not perfect but yea, that's to be expected from an analogy.

  • The problem as I understand it is basically that user IDs in ActivityPub are intrinsically tied to the domain on which the user registered, so you can't really move a user from one domain to another.

  • Censorship-free implies that moderation is impossible. If you don't have moderation, your social media will turn into a Nazi bar.

you can just hide messages from selected users in client

That's not good enough. First of all, users don't want to have to block people before having a good experience. Users don't want to deal with moderation themselves, but they also don't want mean people, harassment and nazis. It's not easy to recruit moderators for online forums, not a lot of people want to deal with that stuff.

But secondly, client-level blocking is not effective. It does not stop those bad users from continuing their bad behavior. In the case of Lemmy, it also doesn't stop their votes from still affecting your feed.

So yes, censorship-free platforms are not good because censorship-free means moderation-free, and users don't want that.

  • Yea moderation becomes a big problem once you can't actually block people. I don't like that Nostr describes itself as censorship resistent or even censorship free, that's not a good quality.

  • This isn't really Lemmy's idea of federation, it's just ActivityPub, the underlying protocol. Having a mechanism for jumping servers is unfortunately quite complicated and it isn't clear how it should be done or if it is even possible.

Lemmy does allow you to export and import your settings though, so you can kinda do it but you lose your history.

  • I'm not speaking against progressive taxation, I'm saying the brackets should be continuous so there aren't any sharp turns in taxation. Right now the brackets make the taxation discrete, but I feel it should be continuous.

  • A continuous bracket could be defined by a single equation. You'd plug in your income and you'd get out your taxation. No need to look up what bracket you are in.

  • Never understood the idea of tax brackets. Why isn't it just continuous? Computers are calculating the tax now anyway, not like it would be infeasible.

  • I write down the best price I've seen, so it's not necessarily a common price. But I feel like the lowest price something has been sold for recently is a good baseline to compare sales against.

  • The good price is 60 DKK per kg, though that price is rare. 80 is more realistic and common.

  • I don't really run analysis on the numbers. I just use them when I'm shopping to see if a price is good or not.

I have noticed that at least here in Denmark, it never makes sense to buy butter if it's not on sale, and some sales are still priced badly.

  • I keep track of prices in cost per kg (or liter) so I am not fooled by shrinkflation and so that I know when a good sale is, without having to remember all prices. Basically just have a giant spreadsheet with the numbers.

  • Is anyone even allowed to get over something like that and go on with their lives?

If it was a mistake and you didn't intend to actually kill anyone, then yes I think you're allowed to move on at some point and even forgive yourself for that.

Mistakes happen. Often it's just bad luck. There's no benefit in beating yourself up about it. What happened has happened and there's no going back. Grieving and regretting and feeling bad and such is normal and okay but I'd say 20 years is enough time to start thinking of forgiveness and moving on.

  • I just didn't have the patience for that honestly. I doubt it will make a difference.

  • when people start unionizing, they just fire everyone

Yea this needs to be made illegal obviously. But that's hard. And that's where it becomes political. You can't get around the fact that it is political unfortunately.

  • Of course it's collective bargaining, that's what I mean with "organize". I don't mean just organize within your workplace, I mean organize within entire fields and industries.

Friend, you don’t know how unions work at a core level.

This sounds kind of condescending and mean. In Denmark we have large unions that cover whole industries and fields and they work very well for collective bargaining and securing good levels of compensation, vacation and good work environments. I am myself a member of such a union. So please don't assume that I don't know how unions work.

  • Yea definitely don't disagree with that. I think that is a factor too. But I think it also kind of goes hand in hand. Do you have similar ideas because you organized and kind of aligned your ideas, or did you organize because your ideas are similar and you easily agreed to organize? It's kind of a chicken and egg thing.

I've also often thought that countries like the US are just too big. There's too many people to take into consideration. A country like Denmark with ~6 million people is much easier to keep track of and the governance and politics is closer to reality.

  • It is about politics. You need to organise yourselves better into unions. Then, you strike until you get what you deserve.

Why does Denmark and the rest of the Nordic countries have so high quality of living and happy people? Cause the people realized that you need to work together to get what you want. You need to have solidarity with your other workers to push for better compensation and work environments.

    Do this, or you're doomed.

  • I actually don't like that feature cause it's not something the user chooses, it's up to the dev or admin (not sure which).
