  • Yes there are plenty of good open source apps and tools. However if you want to read your feeds on multiple devices and have them synced between them that means you gotta host your own service like FreshRSS for example, which is probably not an option for the average user.

  • I came across FreshRSS as well while looking for alternatives to Feedly, but can't be bothered to host it myself and I couldn't figure out how to get an account on any of the providers from the list, I only get a login page but no signup page.

  • If you're looking for a dedicated server there it's always worth checking their "Serverbörse". Sometimes customers want non-standard hardware upgrades in their servers and when they cancel they can't add just rent them out in their normal price classes again so you can get servers with random upgrades at a discount.

  • I've always had fritz boxes but they were always provided for free by the ISP. Not sure if I'd buy one myself as they seem quite expensive and I really don't need any of the "fancy" features it provides. But I also never had any problems with them either.

  • I remember there was a huge outcry in the podcast scene when they started. They basically scraped tons of podcasts that are freely available from their creators' websites and sold them in their subscription model without asking the creators for permission or offering a share of the revenue. Pretty much like Spotify is taking free podcasts, adds their own ads and doesn't pay the creators anything unless they make their podcast "Spotify exclusive". Don't know if they're still doing that but wouldn't recommend them because of this, that's just really shady shit. Just get a generic podcast player (plenty of free/open source apps available) and just subscribe to the podcasts directly on the creators' websites.

  • Babbel is great. Made the switch quite some time ago already when Duolingo decided to cater to Vladolf Putler's homophobic censorship and removed all LGBTQ+ references from their language courses for Russian users instead of just pulling out of the market where they don't even make any money.

EDIT: Should mention that there's no free ad-financed version of Babbel and the regular price can be a bit much. They do a lot of advertising in podcasts though with codes for up to 50% discount, should be easy to find one before subscribing.

  • I'm afraid most maps alternatives don't have a review system or when they have it's lacking reviews due to small user bases. OsmAnd had a plugin some time ago for some open review site but that stop working.

I'm using OrganicMaps and OsmAnd depending on the task, both based on openstreetmaps but neither have reviews.

  • UF-Pro (Slovenia). Not marketed as working but tactical/military clothes, but their clothes and especially pants are the most robust and comfy ones I've ever had and they're available in more civilian looks and colors too. On the pricier side but quality is top notch, will last you a while.
