I've been working on a new/custom sci-fi RPG system for the past year or so
  • Love the art! Thanks for sharing.

From the outside, it seems like you’re close to finishing it. What’s next?

  • Range tracker

While learning Traveller I came across this video where he explains how to use a ruler to keep track of distances relative to other ships.

I liked the idea, but found a 20-inch ruler, just up to long range, a bit impractical. So I created this tracker.

I used black background and neon colors because I thought I would be playing with a VTT, but in the end I've only played in person. So I also have this PDF, in Ledger/Tabloid (11" x 17"). I don't think you'll find a printer that's able to print up to the very edge, so I'll let you decide if you'd rather scale it below 1" per square or just accept cropped stuff on the edges.

  • 😅 That’s probably beyond my skill level.

  • My attempt at the hauler from Flatlined

This was just a test I made while trying to get the hang of the Cosmorgapher3 addon for CC3+.

Basically I just took Seth Skorokowsky's map (linked in the comments of his Flatlined review) and tried to retrace it.

    What's your go-to seed/trope?

    A trope, a seed

Back in the 90s, my GM ran a "Thieve's guild" adventure for D&D. You know the drill: something's going on in town, the PCs track a trail and find a secret entrance to a dungeon, they realize there's a thieves' guild creating the trouble, they deal with it and get the treasure. Then I found a few fan-written "thieve's guild" but had no resemblance to my friend's, just the main concept. Years later, while trying to wrap my head aroung Mage, I asked a friend what would be the "thieve's guild" equivalent for Mage (he said it was "defend a node"). I now call these "seeds", or maybe tropes (but I wouldn't call them that for a long while).

    The milk run

Fast-forward to just a few years ago... I had discovered Shadowrun and felt dry with ideas for getting started. I googled for a while and came up with a reddit post recommending a "Milk run". Basically, have the crew tasked with snatching something from someone (the post suggests swapping briefcases), most likely a courier, and then just let them see how they go about it.

Perhaps you have to let them figure out how to track the mark or maybe give them a nudge. They get to decide if they want to do it stealthily or forcefully. Maybe the police arrives. Maybe the courier is armed and trained. And of course, maybe the patron never intended to pay them after delivery anyway.

Do you have any go-to seeds you like to use for SciFi games?

  • Google threw this at me... haven't read it, but at least it costs $0 to check it out:

  • Have you heard about SW5E?

  • Small Tanker

I created this as a prompt for a small one-on-one adventure for Traveller. A very simple adventure where the player found a gig where she was tasked to go scoop hydrogen from a gas giant.

This was also my first attempt at drawing a ship.

    Relay station [sci-fi]
  • Ah. Names. The curse of the GMs. 😅

  • Relay station

Might as well cross-post this here.

    Thamber system

I made this map a while back, for a Traveller game we were playing.

It's Thamber, in the Solomanin Rim sector, Ultima subsector. There's no canonical system defined AFAIK, so I used https://www.travellerworlds.com/ to generate a new star system. Then drew the info onto Campaign Cartographer 3+.

    Traveller / Cepheus Engine?
  • Great! I'm taking you up on your offer.

    Wecome to !scifi@ttrpg.network

  • Traveller / Cepheus Engine?
  • That thought has crossed my mind. At first I thought it might be too broad, but now I'm thinking otherwise.

Maybe Lemmy isn't as big (yet) as I initially thought.

  • RPG20: databases and graphical generators

I started this site/playground decades ago. Originally, because I wanted a searchable database for D&D 3E monsters, but it's fun to program new stuff, so I kept adding stuff. Mostly for 3.5E.

I don't devote much time to this site so many tools are rough on the edges. The 5E spells database is still rudimentary, for example.

And many of the graphic generators are too "square", but they're the most fun to write.

Recently I've adopted Traveller (mixed with Cepheus Engine) and realized I could reuse a lot of the code already in there and made a first attempt to make a Subsector generator and later a table calculating Interplanetary travel times.

Which leads me to this shameless plug: If you're interested on a Traveller RPG community, please drop a comment on this post I created at !community_meta@ttrpg.network.

Edit: Alas, I ended up creating !scifi@ttrpg.network instead.

Old road vs New road [overland]

I would have liked to post a Sci-Fi micromap for the following, but I haven't drawn any.

So I'll just go ahead with the shameless plug: If you're interested on a Traveller RPG community, please drop a comment on this post I created at !community_meta@ttrpg.network.

Edit: Alas, I ended up creating !scifi@ttrpg.network instead.

I must admit I'm posting this in order to gauge if there's interest on a Traveller community. If you're interested drop a comment on this post I created at !community_meta@ttrpg.network. Edit: Alas, I ended up creating !scifi@ttrpg.network instead.

    Traveller / Cepheus Engine?
  • It’s… weird. There seems to be a lot of people who play it, but you’re right: we don’t hear much about it.

There’s a Discord server (not a fan of Discord myself, I get lost easily) with tons of users (and many publishers) very much active. Even r/Traveller has decent traffic (but r/cepheusengine not so much). There’s a relatively active T5 community at MeWe as well.

Maybe most players are happy to use Discord. Aaaand maybe I should be asking over there if there would be people interested.

  • Traveller / Cepheus Engine?

One game I’ve recently adopted is Traveller, but I haven’t found a lemmy community yet.

I’m trying to decide if it’s worth creating a community but I’m no expert and I don’t think I’d be able to contribute more than a couple of posts.

Sure, I’ll probably have several questions no doubt, but would there be anyone to answer them?

    Anyone here would be interested?

Alternatively, is it worth creating a potential “ghost town” community?

Update: Alas, I ended up creating !scifi@ttrpg.network instead.

Free Scenario: 'Til Death Do Us Part

Death is an illusion some of us may tear asunder in moments of great distress. For this KULTmas we bring you one of such stories—that of a man who has for his entire life repressed the memories of a past event, but now must face the consequences that follow them. For better or worse, he isn’t alone in this. His siblings, each of them burdened by their own dark secrets, come together to unveil the mysteries that haunt their family. Perhaps together they are able to walk past the threshold of mortality. Or it might just be that they succumb to their tormentors.

‘Til Death Do Us Part is a scenario originally written by Gunilla Jonsson and Michael Petersen for the first edition of KULT exclusively in Swedish, but now brought to KULT: Divinity Lost in English with the help of Jens Klot (translator), Nick Rankovic (author; rules revisions, edits, and additional material), and Jacqueline Bryk (editor).

You may download this and past KULTmas releases on https://bit.ly/kultmas — and, as tradition demands, you may always listen to our friends from Red Moon playing the scenario.

Kultists, we hope all is well on your side of the veil and wish you a good end of the year. May these times be joyous and—if you run ‘Til Death Do Us Part—terrifying and enlightening!

We will take a short break in the coming days as well, but our Herald will continue to be present on Discord servers. Feel free to join him and many other stray souls there. And, if you haven’t yet done this and want to know more about the future sourcebooks, we invite you to watch the Illusion Horror Con panel where we discuss the upcoming Kickstarter.

That is all for now. See you in 2025 for another cycle of the machinery of the Illusion.

    Happy holidays!

    The bridge [overland]
  • Thanks!

Micromaps are quite forgiving. Maybe I can convince you to give it a shot sometime? :)

  • Ruins #3
  • 😅

  • Mountain pass
  • Yeah... I considered a banana for scale, but decided it wasn't a good option. ;)

  • Ruin site
  • Lol. Yes. They’re trees.

Legend has it, that some guy named Tolkien popularized that style. Of course, he was better than me at drawing.

  • Cave descent
  • Same place I bought this tiny ruler...

    several tests

  • Underground lake
  • Maybe…? I haven’t explored that particular cave system myself. I acquired the map off a band of adventurers. 😉

  • Studio in a dungeon
  • True!

  • Border town
  • Oh, and also… thanks for posting a map of your own. It was getting a bit lonely in here. 😉

  • Border town
  • Thanks!

And yes. When I manage to collect enough dungeon or cave maps, I might try to arrange /place them so that they (sort of) connect into a larger complex.

  • [Isometric] Throne room
  • Lol. Maybe? Or perhaps it’s an abandoned throne room?

Seriously though, micro-maps can be very forgiving but I still didn’t want to risk ruining it by adding more decorations. Even if it is quite empty as it stands.
