Databroker Files: New data set reveals 40,000 apps behind location tracking
  • I interviewed a bunch of years ago with a company called "xmode social" (I was in desperate need of a job. I fortunately did not get that one.) They had a framework that they paid app publishers in to include in their apps. That framework collected your location data and sent it to xmode who sold that data. That was their entire business AFAIK.

There don't need to be any shared features for companies to include shit like that in their apps. They just need a way to make the line go up.

  • President Biden blocked the sale of US Steel. Why?
  • I'm not sure what your point is. Union leaders are elected by union members to represent them as… a union. Of course press releases are written by the leaders. They're the leaders. That's part of the job. The fact that not everyone in the union agrees with the path the leaders have decided to take is neither surprising nor an invalidation of their leadership.

  • Equal under the law or something
  • The subject then engaged with local law enforcement and is now deceased

It makes it sound like the cops wouldn't have done anything if the guy hadn't brought the fight to them.

  • Net Worth crossed $1mm. Now what? [NA,SA,EU]
  • I work for a major US bank. We use AI for a lot of stuff, but not for determining if someone should be allowed to open an account.

Banking is a heavily regulated industry and there are federal "know your customer" rules that we abide by. They exist for a variety of reasons which mostly all boil down to anti-money laundering.

  • Novel 2-chain bike aims at rock-solid ride and rugged redundancy
  • I rode a two speed kickback bicycle similar (operationally) to this for about a decade. It was the lowest maintenance bike I've ever owned, but the gearing was inside the rear hub and it only had a single chain. I can't imagine that the mechanism being outside improves that.

  • Do I have to build my own touchscreen thermostat?
  • If my choices are a z-wave/zigbee thermostat that connects to my HomeAssistant instance and a Raspberry Pi that I have to maintain, I'll pick the z-wave one (and I did, 10 years ago. It's been rock solid.)

For my smart devices I prefer devices that can't send information over the internet no matter what. I don't want to worry about my thermostat mining bitcoin for some dude in China.

  • Apple might be working on a smart doorbell | TechCrunch
  • The ones that support HomeKit do record to the cloud, but it's at least encrypted. There's failure points, so it's not a fool-proof system, but it's considerably better system than most cloud camera systems that will joyfully hand over your videos to the police without a warrant or store it in some S3 bucket that doesn't even have user level access controls.

  • Senate approves bill to expand Social Security to millions of Americans
  • I've seen some witty remarks from him over the years. One of my favorites was when Republicans wanted to make it illegal to burn THE FLAG (gasp). Schumer was quoted something like: "I wish these people cared as much about what the symbol represents as much as the symbol itself."

  • Amazon workers in US strike days before Christmas
  • How does a company thinking it has a rush of orders it can’t fulfill due to a strike affect how they view their bargaining position in that strike? I’d say it makes them more willing to settle.

It’s not like they’d be thinking “we have 20% more orders than projected. Thank god for this strike.”

Why cancel the order when they capitulate? Because. Fuck ‘em.

  • What is your special interest?
  • I have almost no opinions on specific fonts. Except… I absolutely despise the $ and ¢ symbols in Apple's San Francisco font. Since it's the default font I have to look at it a lot.
