  • Perhaps I'm missing this in the article:

Presumably towns, cities, and state agencies are the ones buying these cameras. Are they able to opt out of data sharing or manually control requests? If not, is there anyone working to put these cameras on procurement blacklists?

  • Good call, I see both of these. I think the second happens when your legs can't quite push hard enough to take good advantage of the bikes gearing. I was spinning like this for a while until I built up a higher level of push.

  • That sounds very reasonable. I like to see monthly and weekly ticket options that even a visitor could sign up for. Every city could expand their transit reach by an extra few miles with a good bike share. That could translate to a huge area increase for transit coverage. I'd hate to see the option to bring your own bike be removed from busses and trains though. Bike share bikes can be like Russian Roulette.

  • In this case, I'd be visiting for a week or two a few times a year. But Craigslist/FB Marketplace/pawnshop bikes are looking like a good value. Definitely not opposed to big box bikes though as I have destroyed many over the years.

  • I'm not super familiar with the area, though I've been in Indy and the surrounding cities towns a handful of times always with very little time to actually explore by bike. I've also seen Carmel mentioned in regards to their roundabouts. I'm doing some research on how I can make that happen best without bringing a bike on a plane. I don't want to take Carmel bikes out of their area, so I may use them to explore the Monan further north and figure something else out for going towards Indy.

  • Regularly, sometimes in a teasing fun way, other times seriously and sincerely. I know she benefits from the positive reinforcement and I appreciate it when it's reversed and I'm being complimented as well. I agree with the other commenter who said they do this for everyone in their life. If you have something nice to say and sincerely mean it, why hold back?

  • Bike rides are the only thing that made cardio fun for me. The varied environments and the thrill of exploring massage my brain and I end up not noticing how much it sucks to bike straight up the side of a mountain. Also the alternating grind of ascending and thrilling adrenaline rush of descending keeps things fresh.

  • A torrent swarm of all the government and court documents that parasites like Lexus Nexus paywall. There is no excuse to not have access to government info online and free. If I understand correctly, some states even have the state statutes (aka laws) hidden behind such paywalls.

  • I would not be surprised if people on foot and good lighting make streets safer than any camera. It's a city design problem and a data hungry surveillance state problem. A good tourist rule is to not wander down empty streets away from crowds. There is a reason for that. When you have 25 people on a street, that's 25 deterrents to crime. If you walk down that same street, empty at night, the only deterrent is a criminal's concience. Cameras can't intervene, they just document.

  • Cool, that gives you options. I think the people suggesting Lectric are giving a good budget option. My buddy has one and we have hauled a few cases of beer home with it. It folds down nicely so instead of buying a bike rack you can put it in the trunk or get on the bus with it. It shines for short and medium distances, but I rotor personally opt for a non folding bike with bigger wheels for long distances.

If you avoid Amazon, research carefully online, and keep a hand on your wallet in person, you'll find some bikes you enjoy. If you have some bike shops near you, you also can't overestimate the benefit of a test ride. That's how I knew my bike was right for me and how I ruled out a few others before that.

Let us know what you end up finding.

  • I have a few routers by them, but not this one. That's really cool for in the city but I worry about reception. The main reason I got the nighthawk was to see if I could log into work from a hot spring with spotty reception. It has antenna ports hidden under the little rubber feet and it does help the range a lot. Still haven't tried the hot spring, but I tried it at a family member in the country's house where the reception is weak and it got me a usable signal. Thanks for sharing. I'll look into glinet a bit more.

  • Ideally space would be provided for all. Something I think we can agree on is that no pedestrian, cyclist, scooter rider, etc. is going to fare well against a lifted pickup at 40mph and the biggest divide is between cars and vulnerable road users. I've biked in downtown Denver. There is some good infrastructure, but there's also a lot of sketchiness, especially the further out you go. Until the road feels safe, people will use the sidewalk.

  • I worked for a tech company in a legal state 5-10 years back. There were a lot of stoners there because most people couldn't handle their bullshit in a sober state of mind and the company just wanted asses in seats to fulfill their contract obligations. I'm pretty sure Subway would go out of business if the weed disappeared. Your best bet is to make good enough friends with someone who works there (as a normal low-level employee) that you can ask an honest question without getting narced on. At my tech job, I treated the stoners with the same mild indifference as everyone else. Let me do my job, pretend to be normal, and don't do anything I can't ignore. Do not brag about smoking weed in front of management or anyone who makes enough money to care. The only people who got pinched did it to themselves.
