Yazi - Blazing fast terminal file manager written in Rust, based on async I/O
  • I'm fairly new to Linux also, Debian with Gnome.

I need CLI filemanager when doing something outside home directory etc.

For example fix a desktop shortcut and you can't start Nautilus "as an administrator " afaik. Or it won't ask for root password.

  • Custom Maps Help
  • I use OSMand website to prepare and plan: routes and POI in folders for certain trips. Then I sync that to OSMand to have it on mobile. I think it's part of the paid subscription.

  • Dennis Quaid’s ‘Reagan’ Is the Worst Movie of the Year
  • If you put it like that I would prefer production, casting and direction like Narcos (Mexico / Griselda etc). Sublime in picturing another era and pure nitty gritty of real life back then. Without fake glorification.

  • Paying for software is stupid… 10 free and open-source SaaS replacements
  • My understanding is roughly, for example:

    • Microsoft Word desktop application: not SAAS.
    • Microsoft Word online: SAAS (just like any other service accessible by browser but not a "localhost")
    • Onedrive: SAAS, storage with local explorer integration.
    • Exchange server on prem: not SAAS, increasingly diffucult to do.
    • Exchange server by MS: SAAS
    • Microsoft Outlook Classic for desktop: not SAAS.
    • Microsoft Teams for desktop: SAAS although local install but its just another frontend instead of browser.
    • Office365: SAAS but really a container for every tool in the MS online toolbox together.

Some caveats: Word handles spellchecker in their cloud and clippy 2024 (Copilot) integration blurs the line.

  • Paying for software is stupid… 10 free and open-source SaaS replacements
  • SAAS isn't about subscription perse although they have them of course. Its about "not needing to take care of". It's software on "someone else's computer" just as with public cloud. In a SAAS construct a provider does the hosting, computing, connection, install, configuration and maintenance. Absolving clients from that burden.

Comparing proprietary desktop applications (even with a subscription) with FOSS alternatives is useful, it's just not SAAS.

  • Paying for software is stupid… 10 free and open-source SaaS replacements
  • I prefer FOSS as much as possible and didn't read all comments on YouTube but ... desktop applications are not SAAS. eg LibreOffice and Adobe apps. But I guess it only requires a different title as the list itself is useful

  • Obscure password requirements
  • Got this site once stating "passwords can't contain parts of username" icw a 64 character pw.

And usenames like "daneelolivaw" block passwords with

    da an ne ee el...

    dan ane nee eel ...

dane anee neel.... etc in them

  • Projects To Watch Out For: Ladybird Browser
  • Also I'm very much cautious about them on anything browsing related. Discovered (after others also) they let their search-pages-in-a-shop get indexed.

Meaning I could go to Caterpillar, search for "Wabtec is better" and then this search url (with 0 products) would turn up in Google searches and that URL persisted. Text and all.

Basically one could spray-paint and tag sites with this graffiti. Shop admins didn't even have means to remove it.

Problem ignored and stayed this way for months.

  • Should one remove all Reddit posts and comments?
  • Loosing vast amounts of historical posts or would I say "cultural heritage" is a shame but I couldn't trust the party hosting it ...

So with Twitter I did the same, 13 years of tweets. Even took a one month payment on a bulk erase / unlike / unfollow / unretweet service to get it done in a reasonable amount of time.

  • How to scale household energy projects
  • Don't know if it's really feasible but for scaling (just like in computing and datacentering etc) we need more standardization for a smarter grid I guess then now AND make it "Plug & Play" AND sometimes other legislation so the required expertise to install and configure comes down and you are allowed to do so in a safely manner.

One example here in NL is HomeWizard home battery because it's just max 800W one can just plug it in. (In order to have more in one appliance we need other compliance regulation)

  • Project Liberty
  • I looked briefly through their site:

    • Heavy on partnerships and ambition. Which is a good thing.
    • Light on technical details and implementation.
    • Hinting at former hype (blockchain) and current (AI)

But for me the biggest concern is development of a "new" decentralized protocol. IMHO there are enough protocols around to choose and pick from and help moving them forward instead of making one from scratch.

On Sunday, May 5th, I received an email from a person claiming to have access to a massive leak of API documentation from inside Google’s Search division.

Firefox DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials Extension NOT injecting CSS for Google Ads
addons.mozilla.org DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials – Deze extensie downloaden voor 🦊 Firefox (nl)

Download DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials voor Firefox. Privacy vereenvoudigd.

    My questions are:

    • Does the DuckDuckGo Firefox extension "Privacy Essentials" add a local css file to every visited site?
    • Can others reproduce this?
    • Is this harmfull or not?

    Background:

I have a simple static one page site with just one html and css file. It's completely tracker free. Debugging it a bit with developer mode (F12) on I discovered a second css file. This file isnt on my webserver but added local. To pinpoint what caused this I removed every add-on / extension in my browser one by one, reloading and checking my website every time. Took me a while because didnt expect this one causing it.

    To reproduce:

    • Install the extension from the link.
    • Open a random site
    • Check in developer mode the tab Style editor.
    • Scroll and look for a file named %3Ais(%5Bid*%3D'google_ads_iframe'%5D%.css or something like that.
    • Remove the extension and refresh.
    • Check if the file disappears.

    Content of the css file: :is([id*='google_ads_iframe'], [id*='taboola-'], .taboolaHeight, .taboola-placeholder, #credential_picker_container, #credentials-picker-container, #credential_picker_iframe, [id*='google-one-tap-iframe'], #google-one-tap-popup-container, .google-one-tap-modal-div, #amp_floatingAdDiv, #ez-content-blocker-container) { display:none!important; min-height:0!important; height:0!important; }

Edit 25-03-2024: Changed title to not give the wrong impression. See comments below.

/run/user/1000: What to do with it?

My main question is about /run/user/1000:

    • Should I avoid touching it?
    • Could I delete it?
    • Is there something wrong with it?

Background: I'm fairly new to Linux and just getting used to it.

I use fsearch to quickly find files (because my filenaming convention helps me to get nearly everything in mere seconds). Yesterday I decided to let it index from root and lower instead of just my home folder.

Then I got a lot of duplicate files. For example in subfolders relating to my mp3 player I even discovered my whole NextCloud 'drive' is there again: /run/user/1000/doc/by-app/org.strawberrymusicplayer.strawberry/51b78f5c/N

Searching: Looking for answers I read these, but couldnt make sense of it.

    • https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=412850 So if its a bug with flatpaks I'm inclined to delete a certain db at ~/.local/share/flatpak/db

    Puzzled:

    • Is this folder some RAM drive so my disk doesnt show anything strange? Because this folder doesnt even show up at the root level.
    • Are these even real? Because the size of it (aprox 370 GB) is even bigger then my disksize (screenshot).

Any tips about course of (in)action appreciated.
