My latest Linux-convincing story
  • All they have to do is learn, like we did. What's the big deal?

  • Help me decide if I can switch to Linux, I have some questions
  • Hey man, while I do understand your frustration with such a dismissive response as the one you received, IMO it would help you try a little harder to take what's useful and disregard what is not.

I have things I need to do. If Linux cannot help me do them then in what way is it a widely suitable mass operating system as proponents are constantly claiming instead of merely a hobby tool that can do a very limited range of things.

That holds true for absolutely every operating system. There's just a lot that I wouldn't be able to do if I went back to Windows or if I moved to MacOS, and those are the 2 most mainstream desktop operating systems "widely used by the masses". That alone invalidates your comment (no animosity here, just being direct and blunt).

For my ask about Notepad++ I'm looking for features I use commonly. If a text editor doesn't have them all I might be able to get along but this is trimmed down list. Fact is I don't like the idea of having to have a dozen different pieces of software when I used to be able to use just one. Who would?

When I used windows, Notepad++ was my favorite text editor. I found it to be frictionless and intuitive like nothing else out there short of a full IDE. I get your resistance to move away from it and wishing to find something closely resembling your work flow with it. Unfortunately, while you will be able to find replacements in Linux that will far outdo anything you're able to currently do with Notepad++ easily, it's unlikely that you will find an alternative that allows you to retain such workflow. Having said that, here's a good place to start with a simple list: https://itsfoss.com/notepad-alternatives-for-linux/

I've searched extensively for replacements for many of my programs and these are about the last of the hold-outs. Don't want to give advice based on personal experience? Then don't. Want to tell me that Linux can't do these things for me? Then do so in a straight-forward manner.

Again, I understand your frustration, it sucks to be asking for suggestions from what is supposed to be a friendly community (which it is for the most part) and get dismissed like that, but understand that this is not unlike any other group of people. There's all types here, you get to choose how you react to those, and even IF you want to react at all. As for "can't do", at least for me, I still have to see that thing I haven't been able to do in Linux, even if some require some extensive workarounds.

For the rest of your comment, some of the other guys have already provided pretty spot on solutions, and I can't stress enough the suggestion to run a VM or install on some older hardware before you decide if you want to try the road or just go back (remain?) to Windows.

The work flow is completely different from Windows, but I for one didn't really go through any pains once I chose to make the move and never look back. The feeling of owning my computer was never there until I did that, which may have something to do with how biased I am with Linux being the best desktop choice in existence.

Everyone's experience is different, and I hope you give it a shot, and don't let little things like individuals lead you astray from what you want to achieve.

  • The Dislike to Ubuntu
  • Wao, I haven't heard of wubi for about 12 years. Is that still a thing?

  • The Dislike to Ubuntu
  • Ah, that being the case, you're also somewhat wrong. For the most part, Fedora actually uses a bit more RAM and resources than Ubuntu.

  • The Dislike to Ubuntu
  • Thanks for giving me a shot at a woke moment now

That was racist. There is nothing wrong with worshiping Olympian gods. You are a right-wing-conservative-republican-christian-homophobic-misogonistic-white-supremacist-rapper-patriarch.

Lol, I honestly don't know how woke people manage to find all this crap on any comments, and you just saw me try 🤣🤣🤣

  • The Dislike to Ubuntu
  • I use Fedora Workstation, and that is not the case at all. I will agree that an Arch based distro will arguably give you much more control over everything, but to compare Fedora to Ubuntu? That's just silly.

  • The Dislike to Ubuntu
  • That shit of installing what it wants how it wants is MicroShit behavior.

  • PhotoPrism vs Apple Photos currently?
  • I usually create 1 LXC and install docker to it to use it as a template for any other LXC in the future. So, docker on a Debian LXC is how I did it. ProxMox in on bare metal though.

  • PhotoPrism vs Apple Photos currently?
  • Sweet. Never heard of this before. Thanks. I'll take it for a spin over the weekend.

  • PhotoPrism vs Apple Photos currently?
  • Are you hosting in ProxMox too?

  • Push notifications issue
  • Because all apps work differently, use different modules and there's a million different way a dev can code something to do the exact same thing. Without knowing the app, it's impossible for anyone to give you an informed answer. Even the same app, from girhub vs the play store, is codes different to some level.

Having said that, maybe this could help: https://github.com/jr1221/ntfy_discord_bot

  • I want to deGoogle my phone - Alternatives to GrapeneOs and Pixel(google phones)
  • Fairphone + Calyx should do the trick. Nowhere near as hardened as Pixel + GrapheneOS, but I think it's a close second option.

  • Push notifications issue
  • And you just expect us to find out what the app is via crystal ball and cards, right?

  • Suggestion for Android device for archival purposes?
  • You'd do well by looking into the higher-end Fairphone 5.

  • If you're looking to DeGoogle, here's a huge list of alternatives to get you started
  • All the reference to simple apps is not good advise. Simple apps were sold to an Israeli company called ZippoApps. They need to update that list and replace those with the Fossify versions, by the same devs of simple before they were sold.

  • PhotoPrism vs Apple Photos currently?
  • Yes, I tried Immich but it's basically a second job, no thanks. Photoprism is very good, but would need something like Syncthing to auto upload. So I ended up going with Libre Photo. It's nowhere near as powerful as Immich in terms of features, but for my over 500K photos and almost 50K videos, works like a charm in ProxMox with the "UhuruPhotos" Android app.

  • Suggestions for privacy and security blog
  • Yeah, I think that will end up being the available Streamline.

  • Suggestions for privacy and security blog

I'm entertaining the idea of starting a digital privacy and security blog. As a matter of fact, I am self hosting it right now, but mainly for friends, family and acquaintances. It's super basic, more rants than articles honestly, 🤣

Since the only 2 social networks I have are Lemmy and Mastodon, I've been avoiding allowing sharing to Facebook, Twitter and other mainstream SNs.

My wife thinks I should just host it on a cloud and share it everywhere with the argument of, and I quote, "the platforms you use are already full of people as paranoid as you. If you really want to bring your knowledge and experience to others, you should allow us to share to the platforms full of people oblivious to the dangers you constantly slam us with" (which is absolutely true. I'm a thorn on their side, lol.

What do you guys think? Should I add features to share to those places? Would you if it was you? Under no circumstances will I post on any of them, and if I allow to share from my blog, my inner circle would be the one doing the sharing.

I do want to help spread our gospel, but I think that most people in those platforms are just to far gone to even care. I don't even know what to think anymore. I've only written 2 articles so far anyway, so it's not like I'd be the New York Times of privacy or anything.

If you are having issues with Mullvad in Linux (Flatpak) and getting a message along the lines of ""Your profile 'MullvadBrowser' could not be loaded"", it's a known bug and the only workaround right now is to use the test version:

    flatpak install --user https://dl.flathub.org/build-repo/112221/net.mullvad.MullvadBrowser.flatpakref

Sony wants to get all of our kids' accounts, LOL

I just got this email from Sony. My kids use their profiles offline (meaning they don't even have a playstation account) on their PS4, and use my games. And now they want to allow kids to link their other accounts (my kids only have a SimpleX user to chat with their family, LOL).

The sad thing is that a lot of parents will go: "Nice, they can now have it all in one place!"

Love how they say this at the end:

Stay tuned for more details. In the meantime, we recommend talking to your child about account linking so that they can safely enjoy these new features while playing on PlayStation.

    They fucking call these FEATURES!

Looking for a VOIP service to replace Google Fi

This may end up being a bit convoluted, so I will do my best to keep it as short as possible and to the point.

I have a US number with Google Fi, have had it for about 8 years.

This is the only reason why I still maintain that one Google account. The benefit is that I only use it when I am in the United States, and when I'm not, I just pause the service and don't get charged.

However, I feel the string need to completely eliminate Google from my life permanently.

Does anyone know of a service similar to this one? It can be an MVNO or VOIP for my phone, and I would like to port my number as well. I found "phoner", but I can't pause the service, so I would be stuck paying a bill I don't use as much or loosing my number.

If the service is private (not to be confused with anonymous, of course) even better.

Move UnRaid from metal to Proxmox

I have a trusty UnRaid server that has been running great for almost 3 years now, with some kinks and headaches here and there, but mostly very stable. Now I'm entertaining the idea of setting that box up with ProxMox, and running UnRaid virtualized. The reason being that I want to use UnRaid exclusively as a NAS and then run all dockers and VMs on ProxMox (at least that's how I'm picturing it). I would like to know your opinion on this idea. All I have is Nextcloud, Immich, Vaultwarden, Jellyfin, Calibre, Kavita and a Windows VM I use to update some hardware every now and then. I mainly want to do that for the backup capabilities in ProxMox for each instance. Storage is not a concern, and I have 64GB of ECC Ram running in that box. What are the Pros and Cons, or is it even worth it to move all this to ProxMox?

    System76 DKMS Drivers for Silverblue

I need some help figuring out how to install all the DKMS drivers, and firmware manager, firmware daemon, etc on Silverblue.

It's easy on Fedora but I haven't found a single instance explaining how to do it in a Fedora atomic distro.

These are the instructions for Fedora.

    Voyager constantly crashing

So, apparently for no reason, my Voyager app started crashing this morning whenever I touched any of the replies to my comments.

I tried with and without VPN, custom DNS, automatic DNS, Rethink enabled and disabled, and it just keeps crashing.

Yes, I cleared data, un-installed and reinstalled, and it is still happening.

Anyone else having this issue? I thought I'd ask here first before opening a bug report on Github.

Edit: Forgot to mention I'm on version 2.8.0 from Github.

Edit 2: Available version from F-Droid, 2.6.0, does not preset this issue.

Edit 3: Finally got to reporting it. Sorry for the delay.

Dual monitor suspend, one monitor does not turn on when waking up.

Finally got my wife away from Windows and on Fedora 40 (Gnome 46).

Now, when her PC goes to suspend and when she wakes it up, one of her 2 monitors doesn't wake up.

Both are connected to HDMI ports (no dedicated video card, just the integrated card in her Ryzen 9).

Any ideas on what could be happening? I wouldn't want her to go back to Winblows over something so insignificant, but she would.

    Great FOSS Trailing service

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/13523342

    > I made wanderer - a self-hosted trail and GPS track database > > Over the last two months, I developed wanderer. It is a self-hosted alternative to sites like alltrails.com or in other words a self-hosted trail database. It started out more as a small hobby project to teach myself some new technologies but in the end, I decided to develop it into a fully-fledged application. > > Core Features: > > - Manage your trails > - Extensive map integration and visualization > - Share trails with other people and explore theirs > - Advanced filter and search functionality > - Create custom lists to organize your trails further > - Chique design with a dark and light theme > - Fully mobile compatible > > wanderer is completely open-source. You can find the GitHub repo here: > https://github.com/Flomp/wanderer > > wanderer is still under active development so if you encounter any bugs/errors or have suggestions please let me know here or open an issue on GitHub.

    Why you should #degoogle!

I set up a Raspberry Pi 3 with AdguardHome for a friend of mine, and told him to disconnect everything at home and try to watch anything on his phone, being the only device using his home's internet.

He just sent me this, and now he's ready to #degoogle 🤣🤣🤣

He says there were hundreds in less than 5 minutes.

    Android Keyboard with keypad?

I've looked under my bed, in our pantry, and even went under the deck, nothing. Please help me find a FOSS android keyboard in which I can have the numbers to the right of the keyboard, like a computer keyboard keypad, even better if it has gifs.. The only android keyboard I know about that has that option is Swiftkey. Being a Microsoft app, you can understand why I'm not willing to use it anymore. AnySoftKeyboard and Florisboard don't have the option,at least I could not find it.
