How ‘Left Behind’ Got Left Behind
  • I disagree two-fold. At least in the deep South where I'm from, the rise in popularity of the idea of the rapture did not cause Christians to be any less fervent in their rush to convert everyone else. It did not make the vast majority of them self-isolate at all. The author's viewpoint is likely affected by his parents making him live in a commune. Secondly, even if evangelicalism is moving in some new directions lately, I don't think the idea of the rapture is falling out of fashion at all. Christians have no problem with both thinking they should assist in bringing about the end of the world and also believing that the rapture can happen any second. As we all know, cognitive dissidence never bothered them anyway.

For some of them, it's not even cognitive dissonance. They believe certain things must happen before for the rapture can happen. Most of them believe these things have already happened or will soon™, though.

  • Is anyone familiar with this alert? I believe it is Motorola-specific

    Hello all!

My new phone (Moto G Stylus 5G 2024 running Android 14) keeps giving me this alert that an app is giving full screen notifications. The app in question is the freaking telephone app, which I of course want full screen notifications from! There's no option to disable the alert. (The two choices are "go to options" and "not now," by the way. And "go to options" takes you to the telephone app's notification settings.) I cannot seem to find a setting related to this, and I've disabled every Motorola app (including system apps) that I can find in the app list. Although, some of them don't allow disabling.

Anybody familiar with this by chance? I'm getting this stupid alert for every other phone call.

    Thank you!

Which TV has a (mostly) ad-free OS and works with a few regular apps?
  • Actually, I already do that. I have two two steam deck docks, one in the living room and one in the office. I still like having the dedicated device for streaming though. Especially since I tend to download movies/shows sometimes. Can't be filling up the steam deck storage with non-games!

I also sometimes use the deck in handheld mode while my husband watches TV.

  • Which TV has a (mostly) ad-free OS and works with a few regular apps?
  • I bought a mini PC and plugged it into the TV. I use a "wireless mini keyboard with trackpad" to control it. My husband and I have been using it for years. Beelink's mini Ryzen PCs are quite solid in my experience. I have Linux on mine. Firefox with ublock origin. No ads, like ever.

  • Anon learns how to lucid dream
  • By the purest definition (being aware that you are dreaming), I lucid dream nearly every night. I never did anything special to achieve this.

But, it's not as fun as they make it sound. At some point, my mind started resisting me. Sure, I can do anything I want... sometimes. However, most of the time, anything I change goes back to the way is was immediately.

I also used to be able to wake myself up while lucid dreaming. For instance, maybe I would be aware that I am napping, and I need to wake up. So, I would. But, my mind now resists that as well. When I try to wake myself up, sometimes I just wake up into another dream. And, for whatever reason, I am not aware that I am dreaming in the new dream.

None of this upsets me too much, but it is annoying. I think it may be related to some sort of mild, generalized sleeping disorder I have. I experience sleep paralysis and insomnia episodes, but they've never been frequent or upsetting enough for me to seek treatment.

  • Husband Asks If Ectopic Pregnancy Good Thing
  • Very rare? It's never happened. It's considered impossible. The fetus has no way to get nutrients outside of the uterus. Maybe one day we will develop a method of transferring the fetus into the uterus or an artificial womb. Maybe. One day.

Edit: never happened in the fallopian tubes. It can attach other places but the survival rate is 1% or less.

  • Are there still any versions of Linux sold in a box like in the 90s / 2000s?

I've tried to find them to no avail. I'm guessing the box sets just aren't made anymore, but I figured it's worth asking in case there's some obscure one out there somewhere.

To clarify, I'm looking for a more recent Linux version. I know the older ones can be found on auction sites and the like.

Does anybody remember the Rugrats desktop companions / virtual pets?

I remember finding them on the Internet somewhere in the early 2000s. I remember that Kimi was one of them, so it would have to have been after the second movie (Rugrats in Paris). Anybody remember these things? I can't find any details about them online.

Comment text boxes don't behave correctly?

When I am making a post or a comment through jerboa, I am having a weird issue where if I backspace/delete, the text of the word I'm writing will combine with the word before it.

As an example, if I type

    > The quick brown foz

And I backspace to fix the typo, I get this

    > The quick brownfo

If I keep backspacing to fix the problem, it keeps combining words like this

    >Thequickbrown

It's very annoying and sometimes I have to delete entire sentences and start over. Also, if I have a wall of text and click somewhere in the text to make an edit, sometimes it will keep typing where I was before. Also annoying.

Does anybody else have this issue? It could be a product of my keyboard, which is Open Board from F-Droid. But I usually only have issues like this when trying to type my information into websites that aren't designed for mobile. (Fennec, if it matters.)

What are some of the most federated Lemmy instances?

I chose my instance 9 or so months ago purely because it was suggested by the Jerboa app at the time. In lieu of making numerous accounts to access communities that aren't federated with my instance, I was hoping to make a second account with a very "federated" instance. Any suggestions?

Despite being here for a while, I've mostly been a lurker til recently and haven't learned a lot. Thanks in advance.
