  • Ah cool. Amari series looks interesting. Going to order the first book to see if my kid likes it.

The author mentions it as Artemis Fowl meets Men in Black. Have you read Artemis Fowl series? I am wondering which should I get for him first. Which of these is better for younger audience?

How's the 1177 B.C.: The Year Civilization Collapsed to read? Easy to read or somewhat dense?

  • Why didn't I buy a e-reader sooner?
  • Yeah, kind of same here. Wouldn't categorize us as poor, but yeah, couldn't afford tons of new books. Older books in my collection are all used books, though now I go for new books.

Funnily, I have never understood the smell part of it, even though whenever I mention liking physical books, it comes up. I just like the physical feel of the book. Getting the subconscious feel of how much I have read and how much is left by just looking at the pages. Just the overall feel of it.

  • Why didn't I buy a e-reader sooner?
  • Yours might even be older than me. I have Sony PRS-350. It was released in 2010 (and when I bought it) PRS-505 was apparently released in 2008, don't know when you bought it though.

And yeah, the official leather cover (bought separately) has broken down, during the time when I wasn't using it. Device itself works like a charm though.

  • Why didn't I buy a e-reader sooner?
  • Yeah, I don't care about much about how you read, it's so rare for me to meet people who love reading. So after the initial "I prefer physical books" thing, we just move on to what we read and like.

  • Why didn't I buy a e-reader sooner?
  • Haha, I am one of those people. Never thought about like that. Though I go with "physical" not "real".

  • Why didn't I buy a e-reader sooner?
  • E-book readers are great. I prefer to read physical books, but for some of the older books that are difficult to find locally, I just get the ebook.

Still have a 15 old Sony Pocket reader, without wifi or any bells and whistles. Still work like a charm though, and battery life is still pretty good. Though, I didn't use it much for about 6-7 years in the middle, and then light use for 3-4 years, but still, something like that to last 15 years, and still keep working is so nice!

Reading The Twelve by Justin Cronin. Book 2 of The Passage trilogy. Around 180 or so pages in, and we are still in the past, the story is interesting, so reading about these characters, but I am still not sure if it will have any effect in the future / present, or it's just for world building. I am now invested enough now to see where it goes though.

Still reading The Twelve by Justin Cronin. Book 2 of The Passage trilogy. Haven't read much more since the last week, but the few pages I did read are still in old time, and while they are interesting for world building, I can't make myself feel anything for characters that have been dead for 100 years, and have nothing to do with the "current" story. Still, like I said, going to read at least first 100 pages, and then see if I still want to continue.

Also started The Complete Fiction of H. P. Lovecraft. I have never gotten around to reading any of it, so wanted to read it all in published order. Couldn't find any good collection in local store, so started downloading all his work (which is in public domain), but then found out about the ebook created by "CthulhuChick", she has basically gone through what I was doing and compiled an ebook with his complete works, organized in published order (excluding his one story from very early days, and two other non-horror stories. Since I wanted to read those too, I just added them in myself).

So, enjoying this now. Have only read first couple of stories yet. Would love to see how his work evolves.

Finished Artemis by Andy Weir. It was a fun book, but a step below both The Martian and Project Hail Mary. Can't point out why, though I don't think it's because protagonist is unlikable. Still, not a bad book, and an enjoyable read.

I did get some Skyward's Spensa-like feel from protagonist. Maybe cause both of them were outcast, and has the attitude of being annoyed by the whole world.

Currently Reading The Twelve by Justin Cronin. Book 2 of The Passage trilogy. I am some 50 or so pages in, and I am not enjoying it much.

Slight spoiler about the setting so skip rest of the paragraph if you want to avoid it. The first book jumped some 100 years in the future after about 1/3rd of the book, and the future is now the "current" time. Book 2 started with a slight prologue of 4-5 pages, and then it jumped back to Year zero. Don't really care about Year Zero now, specially any new characters. Want to know what's happening in the "now". Maybe they will have some important part to play, I don't know, but right now I am not feeling much interested in the story.

Going to read at least 100 pages and then decide if I want to continue or not.

Finished Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovitch. Book 2 of Rivers of London series. Our PC is getting better with the magic, and yet is still very new to this. We get a peek at the bigger magic world. Would be interesting to see how it develops further.

Reading Artemis by Andy Weir. Have read his other books and loved them, but this is supposedly different then his other work. Let's see.

Also, I think I should start working on Book Bingo, if I wait till the end of Bingo year, I would've forgotten half of what I have read. If any of you are working your Book Bingo, how far have you reached?

Read White Night by Jim Butcher. Book 9 of Dresden Files. The start felt weaker than previous books, but it picked up after a little while, and ended up pretty good overall. In general, every new Dresden Files book feels better than the last one, but with this one, I would say while it's good, it isn't better than previous one (Proven Guilty).

Also started reading Side Jobs by Jim Butcher. These are short stories in the same world. I have read all the ones until White Night (the book I just read). Will keep this book in 'Currently Reading' pile and read the next stories after reading the respective novels.

Read The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. The story was weird, specially the ending. Couldn't decide what to make of it. So will just leave it at that.

Currently reading Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovitch. Book 2 of Rivers of London series. Urban fantasy featuring a "magic cop" in London. I loved the first book, and have only just started this one. Have hardly read 5 pages yet.

Finished The Passage by Justin Cronin. First book in The Passage trilogy. Overall, liked the book. The start was slow, giving me Stephen King vibes, but it picked up the pace as it went along. It was too long though, and can't get myself to start next one right away.

Read couple of son's books to change pace. The Ghoul in the School by Marcus Rashford and Alex Falase-Koya, the second book in The Breakfast Club Adventures. And Unexpected Super Spy by Zanib Mian, second book in Planet Omar series.

Also read, and just finished 5 mins before this post, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson, book 3 of his secret projects, and part of Cosmere, but a standalone book, which can be read without any knowledge of his other work. I loved this book. Like most of his "secret projects" books, couldn't put it down once I picked it up.

Currently Reading... nothing. Just finished the previous book and haven't decided what to start next... leaning towards next Dresden Files novel though... let's see.

Still reading Your Money Or Your Life: 9 Steps to Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Achieving Financial Independence by Vicki Robin. There are some interesting points in it, though not implementing anything right now, just reading the book.

Finished volume 7 of Jujitsu Kaisen manga, by Gege Akutami.

Started The Passage by Justin Cronin. Saw it recommended here a few times, and ordered the trilogy, books are so much longer than I expected. Each book can probably be divided in 2 and still be on slightly thicker end of average book size. I am still at the start, only 60-70 pages yet. Getting a slight feel of Stephen King books. Let's see how it progresses.

Finished Killing Floor by Lee Child, first Jack Reacher novel. I really liked it. I had been looking forward to starting the series, so ordered first 3 books, but when I got the books they were pretty thick, and I wasn't sure if an action / thriller novel will keep me interested for so long, but I enjoyed it. Going to order a few more novels in the series.

Read Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch, first novel in Rivers of London series. It's an urban fantasy police procedural set in London. I was expecting something like Dresden Files, but it was pretty different, not in a bad way though.

Currently Reading Your Money Or Your Life: 9 Steps to Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Achieving Financial Independence by Vicki Robin. Started it in January but hardly read a few pages, started it again today and just finished the first chapter. Unlike some of the other "money" books I have read, this seems to have focus on getting away from consumerism, and figuring out when you have "enough". I have been thinking along the same wavelength these past few years, so it would be interesting to see how it takes it further.

Finished Defiant by Brandon Sanderon, fourth and final book of the Cytoverse series. Really enjoyed it. Recommended to all sci-fi fans. Though do keep it in mind that it is a bit YA-ish, so if you aren't a fan of that, you may not love it.

After that, read couple of books I got for the kid. Mainly read them to stay in the loop of what he is reading and how he is liking it. Also, it's fun to discuss books with him.

First was, the first book in The Breakfast Club Adventures, The Beast Beyond the Fence by Marcus Rashford (The footballer) and Alex Falase-Koya. The protagonist of the series is also named Marcus Rashford, so I am assuming it's named after him.

Second was Accidental Trouble Magnet by Zanib Mian, first book in Planet Omar series. We are reading her newer series Meet the Maliks and liked that, so started her previous series too.

Currently reading Killing Floor by Lee Child, first book in Jack Reacher series. Before that my only Reacher knowledge is from Tom Cruise movies, so enjoying the book now.

I was pretty busy last week, so couldn't post the weekly thread. Sorry about that.

Since the last update, I finished Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson, book 3 of the sci-fi series Cytoverse. After that, I continued with the last novella Evershore by Brandon and Janci Patterson. Now reading Defiant, the fourth and the final book in the series.

Also reading Design Patterns, a classic book for software design. While I have read about these online and studied from other sources, I never actually read the actual book. So fixing that now.

Finished Sunreach by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson. It's first of three novellas written between book 2 and 3 of Cytoverse series.

Finished ReDawn, the next novella after Sunreach, by same authors.

Before reading these novellas, I considered them side stories, which may help expand the universe and give background info about other characters, but nothing big in main scheme of things, but the way story has progressed in these, anyone who miss these will missing out on a lot.

Of course, I have yet to read the next novel, so maybe it will cover some of the important bits, let's see.

After the novellas, I have started Proven Guilty by Jim Butcher, book 8 of Dresden Files. These novels keep getting longer, if I recall correctly, the first few were around 300 or so pages, this one is over 550 pages. Not that I am complaining, they are a fun read, but just an observation.

Finished Three Days to Never by Tim Powers. First half was pretty dense and slow, but second half, when things were getting obvious, and plans finally getting into motion, were very interesting, and was able to read them in just a few days.

It meets criteria for at least 3 different Bingo boxes, not sure where to place it. Would decide it later. ( @JaymesRS@literature.cafe We can do that right? Move them around different boxes after reading more books?)

Now I have just started Sunreach by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson. It's first of three novellas, which are between book 2 and 3. (Well, third novella is generally recommended to be read after book 3, but that's a separate topic). It's a small book, so hopefully will be able to finish it soon.
