Starlink kit found amid wreckage of Russian drone
  • The Starlink probably only works once the drone enters Ukraine. Disabling Starlink in that area would cut off the Ukrainian military too. The internet traffic could easily be routed through a VPN in another country, so blocking Russian IP addresses on Starlink wouldn't work either.

  • What ThinkPad for daily use?
  • The dedicated GPU thinkpads are intended for running things like CAD software where the GPU is not under continuous load. They are not gaming laptops.

You really need an external GPU if you want to play games that were made in the last 20 years or so. The thunderbolt on the T480 is only connected with 2 PCIe lanes, so it doesn't work well with an eGPU unless you use an external monitor too.

  • In rare move from printing industry, HP actually has a decent idea
  • When I print something, I certainly don't want AI messing with it. I often use a printed copy to make sure something will fit before I 3D print it or have a PCB made. I need it to print exactly at 100% scale.

I would love to have the page cleanup feature built into my web browser though. Hardly any sites include a print layout anymore.

  • NIST proposes barring some of the most nonsensical password rules
  • Any password length (within reason) and any character should be allowed. It's going to be hashed and only the hash will be stored right? Length and character limits make me suspect it's being stored in plain text.

  • LG TVs start showing ads on screensavers
  • This is one of the reasons I've never connected my TV to the internet and I never will. I use a mini PC running Linux with a remote and wireless keyboard. It's much more capable than whatever is built into a TV.

  • [newbie] Does one need special drivers for running 3D printers?
  • On most printers, the files are either uploaded over WiFi through a web browser or transferred with a flash drive. As long as the slicer runs on your computer, you will be able to print. There are a lot of open source slicers for FDM printers than run on Linux.

  • Grid-scale batteries: They’re not just lithium
  • It's very uncommon for them to last 100 years, but they do last a lot longer than any lithium or lead acid batteries. The charging efficiency is rather low, which is probably why you don't see them used much.

  • I got another oscilloscope from a ham fest.

I picked this little scope up from the Seapac swap meet a week and a half ago for $3. It turns out that all it needed was some contact cleaner to get it working again.

This is a portable scope that can run from 12V DC as well as an internal battery. I don't have the battery for it, but I could probably put some 18650's in there if I disable the built in charger.
