  • The US actually heavily tariffs foreign-made vehicles that could skirt the CAFE requirements the way American trucks do. Light trucks suffer the Chicken Tax and can only be made in Canada, US or Mexico to bypass that. Been that way since the UAW boss asked LJB to do something about the German imports growing.

  • Java 8 to 21 + spring boot 2 to 3 brought the need to change a lot of dependencies, but often they were drop-in replacements. That was mostly Jakarta stuff. On the Spring side, a lot of things we used were deprecated, but that was not related to the Java version.

Did not take a huge amount of time to upgrade anyway. But maybe our systems weren't the most complex in the first place, a lot of our applications were pretty small.

  • The lesser part maybe true but so is the evil part.

Always has been, otherwise it wouldn't be called the "lesser-evil" party, it'd be called the "good" party.

We've known for decades (and I do mean everyone by 'we', I'm not even American) that the democrats are also corporate bootlickers. It's just that their policies tend to be less anti-human generally. For a while, it was clear: Vote dem, get some consumer protections and slow improvements in healthcare, LGBT rights, etc. Vote republican, get every good thing repealed and new anti-consumer, anti-lgbt, anti-healthcare legislation introduced. Now the dems want to cater to the right for votes and the "lesser" part of "lesser evil" is starting to diminish. They're still the lesser evil, but they're also more in the way of true progress than ever.

  • But that's not morality, that's self-preservation. It's morality if you don't do it because it affects others in a negative way, it's self-preservation if you don't do it because you don't want negative consequences for yourself.

I guess we can only truly measure morality where there are no consequences for one's actions. That's why it usually goes out the window for rich people.

  • Oh we have an appropriate joke for this too. A few decades old now, looking at the names.

After their deaths, Bush and Putin are frozen. 50 years later, technology has advanced and both are revived.

Putin opens a newspaper and starts laughing. "What's so funny?", Bush inquires. Putin shows him the headline: "America is communist"

Bush opens another newspaper, starts laughing even harder, literally jumping around the room. Putin, unable to believe that anything could be funnier than communism in the US, grabs the paper and nearly faints after seeing the headline: "Unrest on Estonian-Chinese border"
