Is the Gecko engine the only reason Mozilla still exists?
  • No way in hell would Proton make a Chromium-based browser, the only way that would not be hypocritical is if they fully open sourced it (you could compile it yourself), and maintained their own fork completely devoid of Google tracking and telemetry.

  • Is the Gecko engine the only reason Mozilla still exists?
  • Right now I don't think Proton would do much better than existing options. There are browsers on different ends of the privacy to convenience spectrum (and these are all Gecko based):

    • Firefox: decent privacy by default without changing any settings
    • Librewolf: Firefox but with hardened settings for privacy
    • Mullvad Browser: Almost the same as Tor but not on the Tor network, which is admittedly slow
    • Tor: Uses the Tor Network and by default very hardened for Privacy but makes lots of convenience and QoL tradeoffs, including letterboxing to common browser resolutions.

Is the Gecko engine the only reason Mozilla still exists?

Most of Mozilla's money of course comes from Google to make them the default search engine on Firefox. And of course its a way for Google to ensure there's at least one alternative browser engine. Reading about how Texeira was recently fired and how executives have been pushing for AI features for a long time, Mozilla certainly loves chasing trends and then forgetting them, like how Google kills lots of products. It seems like the company can't stand on its own two feet without Google's funding and is poorly run.

What happened to Mozilla over the years? How much effort did they put in to trying to be a successful tech company? because it hasn't been until the past few that I really started following Firefox and Mozilla news.

I wonder if Mozilla could've been Proton, years before Proton AG existed, making their own comprehensive suite of privacy-friendly tools, since Mozilla makes privacy their brand. And they were late to the smartphone game with Firefox OS. If they were smart, they would've ensured their long term survival with an actual business, to continue funding development of their privacy and FOSS software like Firefox, without large funding sources like Google.

How do you filter ads and trackers outside of a browser while still using a VPN service?
  • I installed the app from FDroid and it does in fact have on-device blocklists.

I did a search and found this comment, https://reddit.com/r/rethinkdns/comments/1f7ydjo/git_vs_fdroid_google_play_app_version/

After v055b, we hit numerous bugs (and unbelievably difficult ones) in our WireGuard integration. Released v055c and subsequent versions to fix the most annoying bugs among them.

We paused Play Store builds at v055e because each new version since has had its own glaringly annoying bugs (that were of course fixed in the subsequent versions). Why? Play Store brings in the most number of Rethink users (per our estimate), and we decided to halt publishing there until we can figure out how to stablize Rethink's feature-set affected by WireGuard.

    Pausing roll-out like this is a one-off.

Typically, you can expect all flavours (GitHub / Website / Play Store & F-Droid) to be at the same version.

If you're feeling particularly adventurous: You can temporairly seamlessly update (without having to reinstall) to the GitHub / Website version if you're currently using Rethink installed from the Play Store. And then later, when Play Store catches up, update from Play Store again.

  • How do you filter ads and trackers outside of a browser while still using a VPN service?

This is straightforward with browser addons like uBlock Origin where you can add and choose blocklists, but I did searches for doing so system wide and using a VPN but didn’t find clear answers. I could use a DNS service that provides blocklists but isn’t it best practice to leave DNS to the VPN provider? I looked up blocklists and VPNs but didn’t find relevant results.

On Android, I didn’t find any apps that let you filter blocklists and using your own VPN other than Rethink, but the blocklists feature requires using Rethink’s DNS.

So what’s the best way to filter ads and trackers on both 3rd party apps and on OS’s like Android (specific Samsung phones) while still using a VPN?

Maximizing privacy on Android without custom ROMs?

I've had a Galaxy S22+ for 2 years and still want to use it. When I look up how to maximize privacy on Android, many results say to install custom ROMs which I can't since its a US model and the bootloader is locked. I just want to minimize tracking and sharing of personal information. I could use a firewall app like RethinkDNS to block trackers, but could I completely block tracking from Google and Samsung? Are there any lists of packages to uninstall to improve privacy? (I've used ADB to remove a bunch of bloatware. Ex: pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.samsung.android.arzone)

On Firefox Nightly, what do u think of, PiP auto-open on tab switch?

    !

I had it on for a few days but it's inconvenient. I don't pause videos before switching tabs if they're not playing sounds, this feature would turn pip on for them. I wonder if anyone has it on and likes it.

How can I get access to my connect.mozilla.org account back?

I changed emails on my Mozilla account, and then trying to log in again with it, it prompted me to create a new account. I made a Firefox support post 2 weeks ago but got no responses.

What should I do when I see headlines about personal data getting breached? How do I keep such info off the internet?

Like when I read 3 Billion National Public Data Records with SSNs, Addresses Dumped Online, am I supposed to access that data dump or something to see if I got pwned? Are there equivalents to haveibeenpwned.com for this type of stuff? Any guides on what to do when these happen? I feel like I'm doomscrolling or watching the news, and feeling depressed about the world as a result because I should be doing something but I can't or it seems like I can't.

Even though I know better than to put such personal info online, but that doesn't eliminate the odds of them getting into breaches like these, and having started to be careful about digital privacy has opened my eyes to the sad state of privacy.

If you use Simplelogin with your iCloud email, how has your mileage been?
  • No I did end up changing my studentaid email to an SL alias, though I might wanna change it back if it keeps having issues. The issue is that icloud bounced the email, and SimpleLogin itself gave me an email each time one got bounced, with to go to simplelogin.com and see the bounced email. This is the title for each one

An email sent to your alias redacted@simplelogin.com from donotreply@studentaid.gov was bounced by your mailbox redacted@icloud.com

  • Monorepo of all Pocket App Typescript Backend Sevices
  • I guess there are still users for it.

Personally I moved on from it 4 years ago since I was using it for bookmarking and raindrop.io is designed for that and much better, though I've been planning on switching to something self-hosted.

I think Omnivore is a much better read it later app now.
