  • Lemmy.world seem to be more middle-of-the-road on many things while Lemmy.ml and Hexbear seem pretty intolerant to me

I think it was on Lemmy.ml that I saw someone have their posts deleted allegedly for spreading US propaganda or some reason like that, when all they had said was that the war in Ukraine was started by Russia invading Ukraine in 2014 (I'm pretty sure this is factually true and Ukraine didn't invade any of Russia until 2024)

  • I'm not dismissing all of leftism, I'm just referring to so-called "tankies": e.g. people from Hexbear who themselves absolutely do not engage with political ideas "in good faith".

  • I just think it's interesting that the people who get referred to as "tankies" claim to be on the left, but they often support the regime of Putin, a regime which is arguably fascist. I guess that's one reason why I think the far-left and far-right are pretty similar.

  • I wonder what the world would be like if Europe (including non-EU countries like the UK, Norway, Switzerland, Serbia, Ukraine, etc) was all working together for its own defence and interests

Maybe European countries should stop nitpicking over issues like whether to use the Euro, and focus on important issues like defence first

  • In my view, horseshoe theory is pretty accurate

For example, people in the middle recognise that Ukraine was the victim of an invasion, but people on the far-right and far-left both insist that Russia is the real victim for some reason

Maybe it's because both the far-right and far-left envy the state power that Putin has?

  • Outrage bait like this is just stupid.

The people fuelling the outrage (e.g. the South African billionaire and the Reform MP mentioned in the article) don't care about you and never will. They are only stoking outrage for their own amusement or gain.

  • Maybe there will be some small movements towards more co-operation with the EU, but probably not any big moves for at least the next few years.

The UK could even join the EU customs union without joining the single market or the EU itself, like Turkey has done, but yeah it's probably unlikely for the moment. Labour don't want to take a big political risk I guess.

  • Yeah that makes sense. But on the other hand, jailing people for life costs money and there's the slim chance they can escape. But I suppose if you have good security then a full life sentence would be an effective deterrent, so maybe you wouldn't have to pay for very many people to have such long sentences, so it might not cost so much.
