And Dollar General is part of the problem, constantly selling garbage-tier products that reek of planned obsolescence. Their entire business model relies on predatory practices that screw over the poorer US consumers they speak of.

Some good news: Dollar General's stock price has been tanking hard since around the end of 2022.

I'm going to bed but there's countless other studies that show the same trend not just in the USA but in countries across the world. This paper was published in '92 and for those who doubt its legitimacy based on its age, I recommend looking up modern papers on this.

Edit: One last thing before I go to sleep. I'm not making these comments because I want to make men feel bad, or that I think the average guy on Lemmy reading this is a murderer or potential murdered. I'm saying this because as men, we need to cut the bullshit and stop acting like we don't hear other men casually talk about domestic violence, either "jokingly" or dead serious, or that we don't see other men engaging in verbal or physical abuse against women. As a POC, I feel pretty much the same way about racism-- I don't think the average white person is some KKK member but please for the love of god white folks, if you hear someone (especially your friends/family) saying/doing some racist shit, call it out!

I get what you're saying but I get weirded out by people who go from "violence is necessary" to glorifying it. I've seen people dying before and I don't think I'd ever find it satisfying to watch any human burning to death.

Justice is one thing but I think there's a lot of sick fucks who practically get off to violence or at least violence like this in theory because they've never seen some horrific shit firsthand.

Maybe if every town in the country has properly funded public transit that was safe and reliable, we'd see less situations like this.

Extensive public transit hardly means functional. And women are far more likely to be harassed/abused on public transit than men.

I'm no fan of shitty drivers and I think if we live in a world where license suspensions are a thing, that's fine but don't be surprised when stuff like this happens when public transit sucks. It may exist but there's a reason why a lot of folks prefer their car over poorly funded public transit.

If Discord was open source, I actually would not mind paying a fee for it. Fixed or reccurring, ideally the former. But that's never happening. And forget buying that Nitro thing.

Until a viable alternative is presented, I doubt Discord will die anytime soon. Part of the problem is people have a hard time accepting that even if you make the best meal in town, you've gotta get people to step inside before they'll try it. To an extent, this does involve winning a popularity contest of sorts if you want Discord to die.

I think often times folks are torn between enjoying a space/app as is, and making compromises to attract a larger group. IMO Linux has the same issue and that's part of why die hard fanboys get so aggressively defensive when this is brought up.
