Suggestions for privacy and security blog
  • One of the first steps I did was removing the Facebook app and replacing it with a Foss version still maintaining the account. Not until a lot later I deleted it. People do change. Go ahead, add some share buttons.

  • Dropping Cellular for VoIP? Daily Phone use.
  • SMS codes as mentioned and cellular data makes something with Sim card or e-sim a necessity. This can be mitigated by using a portable hotspot or cellular router/modem. Had a teltonika router that autoforwards the SMS as email.

  • Hexbear Linux users are the deep state of China
  • OK I bite. I have used Linux for almost two decades, last decade without dualboot. Got a windows laptop from work, im glad I don't have to mess with it and just hand it to IT department instead. Seen windows home PCs people use and the absulute horror it is.. last time I used windows , and this is the way, at least for people who don't login on givemeavirus.com, is: Windows AME Chocolatey Hostfile adblock/malwareblock

    At least 70% shit removed.

Go for that and dualboot it until you are familiar with Linux. Its just a skill issue 😉

  • MacOS is garbage
  • Sure but I spotted asahi a year or two ago. At that point not much worked. Things are going forward pretty fast. Im impressed at whats been done so far

For an end user who uses Just WorksTM distro, Asahi Linux might not be "done" until they are able to boot their favourite distro's installer off a USB stick and run its install procedure like they would on an amd64 machine. They likely also expect features like 3D acceleration, modesetting, WiFi, Bluetooth, Thunderbolt etc. to all work out of the box. For this to all be the case, all the relevant kernel patches have to be accepted upstream and then pulled into the distro's generic kernel and the user's particular machine must have support in U-Boot. Considering that at the time of writing, many of these drivers haven't even been committed to linux-asahi, so this point is probably quite far away. For people who expect such things, Asahi Linux likely won't be "done" for another year, maybe two.

  • What smartphone to buy and what CustomROM to use?
  • Next best thing to GOS would be Calyx OS. Seems only pixels are getting full updates unfortunataly.. https://calyxos.org/install/ The hardware on the pixels security wise is unfortunately hard to beat. Get a used one?

E/OS seems like a good choice if you don't want to use a pixel.

  • iOS sucks
  • https://grapheneos.org/faq#audit

Thing is that is true for any phone. One needs your own hardware to completely control it.

I think its something they are working on.

Librem was a flop indeed. Also had my eyes set on it way back. GOS is by far the best option we got today

  • iOS sucks
  • Kind of like how they run on rare earth minerals from slave mines in Congo. Shit of course, but not much relevance to the dataharvesting part. Only thing I can see is on chiplevel. . Hoping we do get pure Foss Linux phones that are good enough soon..
