  • Software is the answer to many of the mechanical issues too though. Granted, the physical engineering is definitely over engineered, but would they really need to have 6 different taillight frames when LEDs can be multicolor and just tuned with software for each market? I also see zero reason why manufacturers can’t start from a base and tweak for different market configurations. You also see car companies complain about complex regulation, but then in this day and age when east Asia can make you anything, that’s not an excuse I’m willing to be fed. I fucking hate Elmo like everyone else here, but why the hell is the Model Y the most popular car in the world. None of the other companies want to copy Tesla? They don’t want to compete? We’ve gotten to the point where it’s ludicrous that they’re not competing.

  • I will strongly disagree with “over engineered”. Why a car company with all their money and bailouts that they can’t compete with Apple/Android on touchscreen features and responsiveness is the whole reason why Chinese cars will kill American car companies. Chinese cars support Android auto even when Google play services isn’t even available in China (last I checked).

  • American transport outside of subway systems is literally unusable in most cases. The bus in my city of 1M+ people takes 1.5 hours to go about 20 minutes of distance by car. In some cases I can beat the bus to a destination on my bicycle.

  • You swap the blue in that flag for red and it’s “pro firefighters”. Green is “first responders/EMT”. Pretty sure I’ve seen a thin grey line as well, but I’m not sure of the origins.

  • Idaho….? Utah? Neutral, really?

  • NYC is easily the most diverse and integrated major city in the country. That kind of rhetoric doesn’t apply to the majority of NYC.

  • This person is seriously underselling how expensive Teton county is. It’s literally millionaires and locals who are now millionaires, or locals who are so poor they only stick around to work in hospitality. Any given “pretty” image from Wyoming is most certainly taken in Teton county as they’ve said above.

  • I’m from the Boston area, lived in rural NH as well as in Lawrence:

If you move to Wyoming, you will regret it. It’s got the coldest weather in the country outside northern Alaska with killer wind chill worse than Minnesota. Yeah, 2 hours away from doctors sucks, but now imagine that in the winter, driving conditions being the same thing as 495 after a snowstorm but constant. In retirement, for me, I don’t think it’s wise to fight against weather… I get that the city and hot weather isn’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for temperate weather that won’t kill you, look into Eureka, CA or Coos Bay, OR; those places are basically Boston springtime but all year round. They’re also small communities and absolutely not rat races like Boston can be.

  • In my accent I’d say “mo”.

  • Does Wipr work on YouTube? Vinegar hasn’t been updated so it’s been broken for months.

  • The car market is due for an IBM level shakeup in the west. It’s unbelievable to me that Tesla is the sole manufacturer that creates cars with as good infotainment as a standalone tablet from Apple/Google. Not a single other carmaker other than Volvo can be considered objectively better than Tesla. It’s fucking insane that Chinese phone manufacturers slaughter everything on the market in terms of fluidity and ecosystem. I’m pretty sure Chinese cars even support Android auto when Google itself is heavily restricted in China. Even if you’re supporting China by buying one, it’s worth it to kick western manufacturers in the teeth so that they’ll be forced to compete.

My Ford F150 Lightning takes two whole seconds to register a volume change with an animation onscreen. It’s fucking unacceptable that this is being protected in the west.

  • Raised by immigrant grandparents here, parents were born here. They don’t care. My parents have zero concept of what immigrant challenges my grandparents faced.

  • Them removing slide over really kills me… I’ve been wanting slide over on macOS for years now…

  • I assume California was the first to change

Nope, that designation goes to Massachusetts. First gay marriages occurred in 2004 and never had a prop 8 pass as late as 2008. California was a red state, redder than Florida is now, until very recently. California is a relatively recent leftward shift.

  • This is my own personal conjecture so take it as you will:

Profits, incomes, and disposable incomes across the board are lower for those not in or above the multi millionaire class. People, businesses, and just general society spent more money on aesthetics 30 years ago. People had more time, money, and energy to utilize designers, artists, and talent. Nowadays it just feels like everything from architecture, to cars, to public infrastructure is just barebones utilitarian. Like, when was the last time you saw a new marble statue go up? When was the last time you saw a new building made in the same style as the city halls/state houses of 100 years ago? When was the last time you saw public art that was intricate and had form over function? When was the last time you saw huge sweeping infrastructure upgrades like third spaces, burying power lines, pedestrian paths, or underground tunnels?

In 150 years, people will look back at this time period and say we were all miserable and poor and couldn’t afford anything outside of necessitation.
