Most kBin’ers, unfortunately: “Does not conform to my position, try again.” shakes magic 8-ball furiously
Not trying to beat a dead horse, but boy has this conflict really shown the dark side of kBin. I guess that nice federation atmosphere only applies for some topics. This place is not really any better than the other alternatives. (Edit: Still better than Reddit)
Oops you fell victim to your own response. Oh, but you used alternating caps, so I guess I’m supposed to feel stupid? I don’t. You could have live footage of the jihad perpetrators, and you’d still get people saying, “isR8eL 1nvEntEd M1nD c0nTr0L derp!” Can’t help those that don’t want help, I guess.
“We were about to launch peace offering rocket, when infidel occupiers shined mirror in our eyes! Admiral Ackbar!”
That’s sad. I’ve always loved him in everything he’s been in (maybe not Event Horizon, but that’s me), and he seems like a very nice person. He’s Majestical!
I don't understand why every news source has to give dump so much more time than anyone else. Who cares what he said this time. It's the same thing every time. I guess it gets them more views (by what metric? Nielson?). CNN even said after dump's first win that maybe they shouldn't have given him about triple the coverage of every other candidate from both sides combined. In the interim years, CNN has still had more dump than even the current president.
This is why I do not watch news anymore. But, it matters little. Humanity, please continue our speed run to extinction.
I don't use my Mac much, but I was just recently looking at Stage Manager to help me set up a few app arrangements for some work I was planning to do soon. I thought it was the answer to my prayers but I was, again, disappointed by the lack of options and what I would consider common-sense features.
I did see something called Moom on the App Store and it was $10. I didn't buy it myself yet but I think it might solve all or most of your problems. I think its sole purpose is to save app and window arrangements and allow you to set up keyboard or trackpad (or mouse I assume) shortcuts to get back to those arrangements. It seems to have options relating to how the apps are handled (are they opened if not already open? do they default to a particular file or action upon the shortcut being used? etc).
If you do happen to try it out, let me (us) know what you think of it?
I’ve been doing it for so many years across all devices and platforms that I actually get…confused for a second when one slips through. It is normally YouTube that slips through (they seem to be trying new things almost daily to get around any possible ad blocks), but sometimes it is from a major news web site or something. I actually have to look around for a second and then realize what has just happened.
The windmills are stealing the wind! It’s not infinite, you know! Those windmills are going to slow the planet’s spin down, and then we’re all going to fly off it! But, I’ve heard if you love Jeebers enough he’ll pull you back down to Earth by your oversized belt buckle (but not in a gay way), so maybe it’s okay.
The Russians got smart and bought Carryout Tracking on every pizza order. The drone strikes bankrupted Domino’s, not their food-adjacent menu.
You are in a similar position (it sounds like) to where I was a short time ago.I was so fed up with the state of things on the computer/console/handheld front that I just kind of did not want to play anything anymore. Two things, and adjusting my expectations, really helped:
-
Game Pass - I’ve had it forever, but now it is more important, since I’m not buying new games as much anymore. It’s a small monthly fee, and I can frequently be surprised by the quality of some smaller indie games.
-
RetroAchievements - This is my current “thing”, and hopefully it will be for a long time to come. You use an emulator that has support for RetroAchievements (the biggest one being RetroArch) and the correct ROM file, and you can earn achievements in thousands of old games, from the earliest days of mass-market computing and consoles (magnavox, intellivision, apple ii, fairchild, amstrad cpc, etc.), through all 8 and 16 bit consoles, and up to Ps1/2/PSP/N64/3DO/Dreamcast, with Gamecube, Vita, or PS3 likely to be the next “big” console release (probably Gamecube). Revisit your favorites from years past and play them in new ways to get all of the achievements, or try out games you never had (or systems you never had) for the first time. Biggest criticism is that they have a tendency of being “too hard”, but you can either just pick games that don’t have ridiculously hard achievements, or just not go for 100%.
I will absolutely be buying Baldur’s Gate 3 as well.
This is the most on-brand and least surprising post I’ve seen today.
Let’s hope not. I know there are at least some for whom, “I don’t care if we destroy the planet. As long as the marijuanas sellers cannot corrupt our christian youths.” rings absolutely true. It’d be nice if we, as a species, had just the teeniest bit more sense than that…We’ll see.
"And you know what else I don't like? The Moon! Why does it have to chase the Sun away? Every day? It's like clockwork! I mean, you could maybe probably set your clock to it. I wouldn't. But maybe more dumber people. They might do it. And another thing, sometimes I don't want to go to sleep yet! But no...we gotta have the moon. Gotta have it. Wouldn't it be nice if we could just have the sun? I mean I have a great tan. You could say I have the best tan. People love it. I have the best tan. I look great. I feel great. I've never felt better. I might live forever, doctors say. I think I might be aging in reverse. You know, that Benjamin Bratt disease. Boy, wasn't he great for inventing the dollar bill and kites? Love kites...they're great. Dykes, not so much! And we love the wind, don't we? Kites and dykes, both love wind. Can't fly the kites without the wind, right? And you know the climate is doing so great now. We have the wind. The water, the fire, the earth. It's amazing, I tell ya. What was the question again? Yea, I slept ok."
I would never brush or floss before, unless I had just eaten something awful within the last hour or so. I think it is best to stick with your normal routine. You give the hygienist a better look at how good or bad your cleaning is. They can easily tell what is recent and what has stuck to the teeth and requires scaling. Furthermore, you aren't saving them any stink. The stuff that you need their help to clean out smells about 50 times worse than the things you just ate (just smell your floss compared to your breath after any meal). A quick rinse with water will get the worst out of their way, and even if you're a sloppy eater the rest will take maybe 5 minutes at worst to remove.
TIL that humans somehow manage to last another 18,000 years…something I highly doubt. 18 years is pushing it.
Also, I’m not a big Mac person, but you can have dark mode turn on and off at either sunrise/sunset or also set custom times yourself. I don’t know what that NightOwl app actually does (or used to do before the tomfuckery), but with those two options (as well as of course the ability to choose permanent light or dark mode), I don’t know what else you would be missing?
I personally just don’t buy Squeenix software any longer. They’ve abandoned too many titles (mostly on mobile, but elsewhere too) and I just don’t feel good about giving them money. Last one I purchased was FF14 for the PC (which is one of the best MMOs I’ve played).
That’s just my take on things. If it happens to show up on Epic for free or Game Pass (unlikely on both, I know), then sure I’ll grab it to try.
Thank you for pointing that out. I just did not see it. At least two of the themes were dark/cool enough to not hurt my eyes, so I do appreciate that option.
I browsed around it for a good 20 minutes or so. My initial knee-jerk reaction is that I would not want to join a community with no ability to create or join specific areas that could be narrowed down to more specific topics. “Gaming” for example (and as someone else already mentioned), has to be video games, of all forms (retro, console, computer, homebrew, hacks - from all years) alongside board games, card games, browser games, children’s games, educational games, physical toys, etc. It’s a mess, to me at least. There aren’t even that many categories.
It is also very sterile-feeling. I appreciate a good old-fashioned text wall, but no options for background and text colors even? (Maybe that is an option if you are able to log into the site)
Yea but that’s only because the game has lots of pretty, moving pictures. And the books have pretty covers.
I’m American, so I can’t even read. I noticed some symbols in the show that could be conceived as trying to impart words or ideas, and it just turned me right off.
You might be asking yourself: “If I can’t read, then how did I understand and respond to this topic?”, and I would then respond: “SHUT UP VOICES IN MY HEAD!”
Even if everything you have said in this post is 100% true (and in my opinion, it is not), then the good news is that both Lemmy and kbin (and really most federated spaces I've joined) have excellent blocking tools. Block freely, block safely, block often if these other posts are bothering you.
I quickly looked at your kbin account, and it seems like every post you've made so far has to do with social networks and apps and people being mean. I know it sucks that you've just lost a very large community, but trust me, just let it go and you will be happier.
I have no way to know if you'll do this, but just as an experiment: next time you see a post here that you think either comes from or belongs to The Old Place, block it immediately, and then open up Magazines (or channels if you're in Lemmy) and pick a topic that normally would not interest you at all. Birds, movies, books, architecture, science, stamps, etc. Browse that for a few minutes and try to involve yourself in one topic. Just one. Even if you know nothing about it, ask an insightful question. It doesn't really matter if you get any response at all or not.
Do that a handful of times every time you see something you do not like here. I'd be curious if it helps you (or anyone else that tries this) in any way. I have done this myself, and it has helped me, but that doesn't prove anything.
