  • Nextcloud has been a pretty good switch but it is getting unwieldy and a swiss knife with a million tools. Run my own email server switched from gmail, but it is a pita VPS server is contabo - not the best but pretty cheap and is European - never really looked into how european they are though and they have US datacenters

  • It is also about confidence which is a real short term thing. First thing I was taught in Economics lessons was governmental policy and fiscal policy rely on confidence - a no-confidence vote is exactly how most governments fail, the same is true of how a fiscal policy pans out. One bad decision can ruin confidence and bingo we are looking at a crisis

  • you know that the new online safety act mandates age verification for pretty much anything don't you?

  • to be fair they are forcing age verification on everything... can't see FB/Meta being clever enough to sort it out though

  • for future reference there are a few ports that need to be open for let's encrypt to work, and it has a very small timeout (as you have found) so if the dns isn't great it fails. Cloudflare will cache your site/dns so usually works

  • I take it back. Funkwhale is working again.... Discourse is gone for ever though as Discourse themselves only want docker installations moving forward

  • To move your photos from google I recommend Immich. Is available as a docker container, or yunohost though don't use the official yunohost version there is a better version that supports HEIC and some other formats. You can find that here though

    https://codeberg.org/Loowiz/immich-docker_ynh

It is still easily installed using yunohost but upgrades are manual

  • +1 for yunohost, though it can be a slow solution. However it will get something up and running easily, provide certs etc. and let you start out on self-hosting. With a half decent old pc you can host a load of services. You could run your own lemmy instance for example. However a lot of newer things are often broken or fail to work in Yunohost (funkwhale and discourse are a couple of things that are beyond redemption)_

  • That's because they are free. You really do get what you paid for - or not in this case. It's in the t&c's too

  • There is something in that, plus the internet in general seems to be getting dumbed down a lot. Fedi also seems very much a place full of extreme views which for a lot of people is just a turn off. • It should, and yes I used to think that. I'm in the UK and some routers just fail to work properly with higher port numbers, especially cheap routers from cheaper providers. Once you start getting above 8000 the traffic is limited thus me saying try a lower port number. Plus yunohost doesn't really ask for a port number as you should add a domain first, then install the application (it uses docker btw) on that domain, then cloudflare to the domain. So the port number isn't required. I'm guessing, but can't be sure, that this is the real issue. yunohost adds a self signed cert and configures the firewall etc. so if you don't do it right using a cloudflare tunnel it just doesn't work. I'm guessing the OP hasn't done it like this, and then it will never work - believe me I've tried. yunohost also adds fail2ban, firewall inside yunohost and various other ways to protect what is served

  • I disagree. Searches are not googles main focus these days. Blocking their crawlers will just make the AI searches better - exactly what google want

  • Pretty much using for your family and not for a photo sharing app for everybody is how Immich was built....

  • X has declined yes, but threads is growing. Loads more joining recently as well. Most seem to move from FB to threads because they have a Meta account, so have an Insta account soooooo.... Threads is a dumbed down X (I can feel the heat I'm gonna get for that) Meta is by far and away the largest for users - we all know it and it means that promoting threads inside Insta and FB means people will see what it is like. Here in the UK it is refreshingly free of ads, is quick to post/reply/interact and feels new. How long that will last is anybodys guess as per usual

  • It depends... the OP is also using yunohost which can and does have some issues with higher port numbers, plus you also have to factor in if he is self hosting as I suspect, some routers also won't properly forward higher port numbers either. Difficult to say but lowering the port number is one thing to try. Too many variables to really drill down and say what is happening

  • and... with yunohost in most setups there is no need to use port numbers, for various reasons

  • Cloudflare and yunohost user here. Need to install the cloudflared service and make sure it runs and the tunnel connects in the zero trust dashboard. Will say healthy when it does. Try a lower port number, something in the 2000-3000 range is good to test. Then in the correct tunnel once it is showing healthy you need to add a public hostname (for ease of use). Say lemmy.mydomain.com, use https then localhost:portnumber/ Then in additional settings you have to turn on notlsverify else it won't work. That should get it working. To be honest I've not bothered setting up various ports other than the defaults so you shouldn't need to set up the port so just try https and localhost and that should do the trick - this could be where you are going wrong as yunohost doesn't explicity need the port setting in most common configurations. Then in the yunohost admin area you can go into applications and open the app and it should work. Any probs give us a shout

  • It does, but there are issues especially with proxy content. Way easier to listen on lower port numbers especially to debug
