Had my annual "review" two weeks ago, which these days just consists of my manager telling me he gave me the highest marks in all the categories and to go into the company portal to look it over and approve it. This is fine with me, as I don't usually have anything particular to go over with him and getting this grading usually means a higher percent of a raise compared to my coworkers.

After I submitted it, asked if he heard anything about what the raises looked like this year, as it is always some ambiguous number based on "company performance" for the year. While not record-breaking, it was an alright year so figured at least a 3%, maybe 4%. He told me he had not hea

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Northeast [US] Is Burning

cross-posted from: https://slrpnk.net/post/15335273

Thanks to the relentless burning of fossil fuels, we are — right now, in real time — departing the Holocene epoch, the Goldilocks zone of relative climate stability that enabled us to build the world as we know it over the past 12,000 years. We must recognize this moment for what it is: the beginning of a new era of civilizational retreat, contraction and consolidation. Call it the post-Holocene.

For context, wildfire has been quite rare in the northeast US for the past few hundred years.

Tax Efficient Fund Placement

This is a link to a spreadsheet to help determine which funds to place into taxable vs tax-advantaged space.

Here is a link to the Bogleheads wiki about tax-efficient fund placement:

If all else is equal, international funds have a small tax advantage over US funds, because they are eligible for the foreign tax credit.

TL;DR:

  • put international funds in taxable and file for the foreign tax credit each year
  • the total difference is like 0.1-0.2%, so optimizing fees may be more impactful than going through this exercise

This wasn't good enough for me, especially as I'm looking into applying a small-cap tilt to my portfolio and really like optimizing things, so I went digging for more information.

Foreign Tax Credit

When you own stocks or otherwise make money in another country, that other country may charge taxes, and the IRS will also charge taxes on any dividends you receive, regardless of source. This end

McDonald’s busted ice cream machines can now be fixed — legally

US Copyright Office granted an exemption allowing third parties to diagnose and repair commercial equipment — including the ones that make your McFlurries.

The decision is part of the Copyright Office’s final rule granting exemptions to Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). This exemption-making process happens every three years and is supposed to ensure that the DMCA doesn’t negatively impact people trying to use copyrighted material.

Worth nothing that DMCA exceptions are reviewed on the same 3 year cycle and are frequently revoked. So if you're a McD ice cream fan, enjoy it while you can.

National Constitution Day / Citizenship Day (Sept 17th)

To honor the timeless principles enshrined in our Constitution, the Congress has, by joint resolution of February 29, 1952 (36 U.S.C. 106), designated September 17 as “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day” and authorized the President to issue a proclamation calling on United States officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on that day. By joint resolution of August 2, 1956 (36 U.S.C. 108), the Congress further requested that the President proclaim the week beginning September 17 and ending September 23 of each year as “Constitution Week.” NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 17, 2024, as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, and September 17 through September 23 as Constitution Week. On this day and during this week, we celebrate our Constitution and the rights of citizenship t

U.S. firms warn against Draghi report’s ‘European preference’, risks for defence sector

Archived link

US firms warned against possible negative implications of the high-level report published last week by former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi on Monday (16 September) – arguing that certain recommendations would unfairly discriminate against non-European companies.

Despite praising Draghi’s “important contribution” to the discussion surrounding Europe’s flagging competitiveness, the American Chamber of Commerce to the EU (AmCham EU) cautioned that an overarching strive to prioritise European firms would endanger the bloc’s ability to leverage bilateral investments and trade flows.

“Making Europe more competitive does not require the region to turn its back on its long-standing commitment to openness,” the association warned.

“[US] companies are woven into the fabric of the E

As demand for the tin ore cassiterite soars, special forces units of Brazil’s Ibama environment agency must play a cat and mouse game with the thousands of illegal miners pouring into Yanomami reserves

In a world market heated by demand from multinational companies and with prices for tin on the rise – up 29% in the first six months of this year – Brazil has become one of the world’s largest exporters of the metal.

However, as well as increasing profits and commodity exports, the rush for cassiterite has become a new environmental and policing problem.

Considered a conflict mineral in the European Union and the US, cassiterite has increasingly attracted not only companies but illegal mining gangs in the Braz
