Should we get rid of the voting guidelines?
In the community details, we have a note about "Vote the opposite of the norm":
If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.
I've read lots of comments here that amount to that being confusing. There's also the fact that not everyone votes like that, so it's hard to really tell from the votes if something is widely considered unpopular or not. Plus, I don't really want to tell people how to vote.
I also just realized that it's slightly unfair to people running with downvotes disabled.
So, should we get rid of that guidance and just assume posts are voted based on their overall merit / agreement? I'll leave that up to you all.
There are two distinguished comments below which will be used as the poll. Upvote the one you wish to vote in favor of. You can downvote the opposing option if you want, but it won't affect the results; I'm only going to look at the upvote counts. I'll leave thi

To make a long story short, the dates of 2016 and 2022 were chosen as the beginning of the 10xx series era and the end of the 30xx series.
Poll Inside: Do you use the pink hand soap?
Edit: I've noticed some folks aren't taking this poll very seriously
A majority of Democratic voters say the Gaza crisis is either very or somewhat important in determining how they vote.
Commissioned by the Arab American Institute (AAI), the online poll of 2,505 American voters conducted between July 31 and August 1 found that 44% of U.S. voters would back Harris, 40% would support Republican nominee Donald Trump, and 11% would vote third party “if the election for president of the United States were held today.”
But if Harris were to endorse a suspension of U.S. arms shipments and diplomatic support for Israel “until there was a cease-fire and withdrawal of forces from Gaza,” her national support would grow from 44% to 49%.
A majority of Democratic voters say the Gaza crisis is either very or somewhat important in determining how they vote in November, according to the AAI poll.
The new survey, which has a margin of error of 2 percentage points, is consistent with a
Harris says she won’t stop Biden’s policy of sending weapons to Israel
In an interview with CNN, Harris said she supports a ceasefire deal but made it clear that she would not stop sending Israel weapons if elected.
In her first interview as the Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris told CNN it was imperative to reach a ceasefire deal in Gaza, but made it clear that she would not alter President Joe Biden’s policy in the region.
However, when pressed on whether she would stop sending weapons to Israel she told Bash, “No, we have to get a deal done, Dana. We have to get a deal done.”
“Adopting an arms embargo against Israel’s assault on Gaza is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic move to defeat Trump and MAGA extremism. It is difficult for the Democratic candidate to champion democracy while arming Netanyahu’s authoritarian regime” reads a recent letter to Harris from the coalition Not Another Bomb.
Recent polling has repeatedly demonstrated that Democratic voters overwhelmingly support the condition

The Continent's housing crisis has gone from being a slow burn to a four-alarm fire — but some countries are handling it better than others.
One of Europe’s long-simmering political frustrations is suddenly boiling over.

The price of a McDonald's Quarter Pounder with Cheese meal has more than doubled since 2014, data show.
Kevin Roberts remembers when he could get a bacon cheeseburger, fries and a drink from Five Guys for $10. But that was years ago. When the Virginia high school teacher recently visited the fast-food chain, the food alone without a beverage cost double that amount.
Roberts, 38, now only gets fast food "as a rare treat," he told CBS MoneyWatch. "Nothing has made me cook at home more than fast-food prices."
Roberts is hardly alone. Many consumers are expressing frustration at the surge in fast-food prices, which are starting to scare off budget-conscious customers.
A January poll by consulting firm Revenue Management Solutions found that about 25% of people who make under $50,000 were cutting back on fast food, pointing to cost as a concern.
What should be Lemmy's default way of displaying votes?
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/14068273
We're adding the ability to customize this in the upcoming release, but I'm wondering what people think would be a good default.
The 4 pieces of showable/hideable info are: Upvotes, Downvotes, Score, and Upvote %.
In Jerboa, I had a temporary default (until the next lemmy release), of
Score + Upvote %
, but people seem to dislike this a lot.I'll check back on this in a week to see the result.

Should the upvote / downvote + Sync icon colors be updating to match Lemmy?
So blue for upvote, red for down and then an updated Sync logo.
Allowing downvotes only to community members
In our previous announcement, we announced that we closed downvotes.
Some people found it right, some people hated it, some people hesitated. At the end of the day, since we are on a disorganised platform like fediverse, I find the decision we took right. However, I was also annoyed by the lack of downvotes. So I searched for a solution.
I think the planned post flair support will be a good improvement in this regard. But it seems to take a long time to develop.
What do you think about limiting downvotes to only members of that community? I see it as the optimal way in the current situation.
Please vote with empathy, not just as a user, but assuming you are a poster user. Is it right decision?

lemmy-meter.info alerts for instance admins
As an instance admin, would you be interested in receiving alerts in case lemmy-meter detects your instance's health has deteriorated?
The alerts could be sent to any combination of
- a Matrix chat (private or channel)
- a Discord server
- an e-mail address
For example, you could receive an alert if the landing page hasn't been loading for the past 5 minutes.
The details of alerting levels and the conditions that'd trigger them will be ironed out later. At this stage I'd mostly would like to know if there's interest in this feature in the first place before getting to the implementation.
