A Cantonese-language advocacy group has ceased operations after its founder said his home had been raided by Hong Kong national security police over a fictional piece of writing that was submitted …
Andrew Chan established the group to promote Cantonese and “safeguard the linguistic rights of Hongkongers,” after policies were put forward to push Mandarin-language instruction in the city’s schools. Currently living abroad, Chan said he would not return to Hong Kong due to safety concerns.
That really sucks. Mainland China is really pushing for Mandarin to be the main language, or at least the prestige language, used in China, even though there are so many languages there. Cantonese has its own rich linguistic history. But cracking down on Cantonese advocacy groups is one way Beijing is going to make Hong Kong just like the rest of China.
