Our Trump reporting upsets some readers, but there aren’t two sides to facts: Letter from the Editor
This is a tough column to write, because I don’t want to demean or insult those who write me in good faith. I’ve started it a half dozen times since November but turned to other topics each time because this needle hard to thread.
The truth is that Donald Trump undermined faith in our elections in his false bid to retain the presidency. He sparked an insurrection intended to overthrow our government and keep himself in power. No president in our history has done worse.
This is not subjective. We all saw it. Plenty of leaders today try to convince the masses we did not see what we saw, but our eyes don’t deceive. (If leaders began a yearslong campaign today to convince us that the Baltimore bridge did not collapse Tuesday morning, would you ever believe them?) Trust your eyes. Trump on Jan. 6 launched the most serious threat to our system of government since the Civil War. You know that. You saw it.
The facts involving Trump are crystal clear, and as news people, we cannot pretend otherwise, as unpopular as that might be with a segment of our readers. There aren’t two sides to facts. People who say the earth is flat don’t get space on our platforms. If that offends them, so be it.
Wow, that's what we need from more places honestly. This is the kind of stance I hope more news rooms take. People in the middle that aren't politically involved need to hear one side elected a mad man and is trying to do it again.
Such a thoughtful website, I wish more companies cared
These are the people who bemoaned us for "facts not feelings" and they live in a make believe world.
No president in our history has done worse.
What a statement. Forget the Native American genocide, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, dozens of wars of aggression the world over, or, on an individual level, raping women and owning slaves (sometimes both at once): that's nothing compared to riling up followers on social media.
Besides, these platitudes about how important stating the obvious truth is are the kind of propaganda any side can claim for themselves. Real lack of media analysis on display here.
Hell, even if we want to just restrict ourselves to "tried to steal an election", Bush Jr did it and succeeded!
But he did it with CIVILITY! And then he gave Obama's wife a candy or something. (Don't ask about the millions of dead and displaced people across the Middle East because libs dont care at best)
