No need to compile yourself, Lawnchair is NOT dead.
Join their telegram group, they share Dev builds there. Or, you can install Gooolers builds from GitHub: https://github.com/Goooler/LawnchairRelease
Personally I use Gooolers.

Lawnchair isn't abandoned. Here's the latest debug apk. https://github.com/LawnchairLauncher/lawnchair/actions/runs/8399927018 u need to be logged in.
