Discussion options are limited to:
Did you just say Arch Linux?
'Linux is slang for Arch Linux, so I think they did.
Weird way to spell NixOS...
You forgot Star Trek
Don’t forget freeing Palestine
You forgot bitching about Chrome
What if you get a car running linux? 🤔🕵️
park that thing permanently and use it as a Lemmy server
Tbh you can even discuss most of that, if you disagree you'll just be torn to shreds.
Fuck Linux!
More like chardonnay socialists.
I'm pretty sure it's thedonald refugees from Reddit, they're posting about shidding fardding, and posting how scary they are, while banning anyone who says boo to them. I can see why iron fist Bolshevik fascism appeals to these cunts.
What about instance drama?
Instance drama is usually related to one of the above discussion options
I'll take this over the discussion options on Reddit.
Discussion options on Reddit:
Occasionally a video game... maybe
With only one non-downvotable opinion
Wait'll you see how the rest of the internet is
Wait, wasn't there a post the other day with Lemmy stats showing more discussion than ever?
Yes.
I love it when I'm reading the comments for a meme about butts or something, and then it quickly evolves into a deep discussion about the nature of human society.
B-b-b-b-butt... please remember to vote:-).
Meh. I've seen some decent discussions here on Lemmy, just not in c/memes.
Okay, and admittedly more than half of those discussions were about Linux.
It got me to start dual-booting Windows and Mint, so the propaganda works!
Well, I mean... The L in Lemmy does stand for Linux.
Linux! Everybody Make More You-sers.
I've noticed a lot of commenters straight away take things personally and think that mentioning something is endorsing it. That kills discussion and turns it into a defensive symantic battle against commenters' assumptions.
I don't do that at all. How dare you?!
Lmao notifications have no context for me (I just see the reply) but I knew right away exactly what comment this was about
A corrollary to what you're saying is that people assume that because you've replied to them, you must be disagreeing with them. Often I'll agree with a poster but comment to add to their point, only to get chewed out for disagreeing with them when I didn't.
This is my experience. I'll add some additional detail that supports someone's comment and almost immediately get a "WELL ACKCHULY" reply from them.
Yep. That and the insane polarization. It’s virtually impossible to have a discussion with anyone here.
All memes are shitposts.
Facts.
Whoa there, calm down. Mom can only pay attention to one kid in the pool at a time.
Well, in my honest opinion as a commenter, I'd just like to say that I love discussions. What I tend to not enjoy is replying to the 1500 different people who replied to my post with valid takes, requiring me to read, understand and reply appropriately to all of them.
I am lazy, ok?!
Edit: replaced animated gif with a static one bc it just wouldn't stop!!!:-P
looks like OP hasn't been to the world news community.
I mean, I’ve blocked the news community. Too much political bullshit.
Replace lemmy with The Internet and it would be the same thing.
True. But I kind of hoped lemmy would be different. After hearing about the evil algorithms of Youtube, Facebook, etc using fear and anger to keep you engaged with their platform, I came to hope that with a non profit federated system there would be more diverse discussions with more tolerance for different points of view. But as you said, it is basically just the internet average.
After all, no evil corporate master plan is needed. It seems to me like people just like to live in filter bubbles if given the option.
"The problem is that no one's contributing!"
-creates a community, trying to contribute-
-fails spectacularly with no engagement from anyone at all-
Well, that was encouraging👍👍👍👍👍
Crosspost alot while inviting to the community in post body, link in profile, etc.
Of course, Lemmy isn't big enough to have active niche communities yet unfortunately.
Since federation is broken a lot of instances I follow don’t have new posts. So no discussions for me.
What do you mean by federation being broken?
The prophecy is true!
grrrrrrr how dare you make fun of shitposts at uselessserver093
The active sort should help a little with this, but ya its definitely a problem. Besides just blocking meme-specific communities, can anyone think of ways we could make discussions more prominent for people who'd rather use lemmy for that?
You can't go wrong with taking inspiration from RES. Having a filter for the type of posts next to the sort type would be pretty good. That would require the posts to be discerned into categories (video, image, text...). I believe they currently aren't?
There might be an open issue in the lemmy back end for this, but if not, you might need to open one.
Hello,
and
are all open to the public.
There’s big robots, little robots, cursed robots, real life robots, and antiquated ships that aren’t robots but are made of metal!
Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn't work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !fakehistoryporn@lemmy.world
No machine should communicate with me without my express permission.
I’ve found it’s hard to get any Discord community together where chat messages are less than 60% reposted meme images. Someone will post an interesting thought, and then the next post is a single emote or a cat-related meme with a single word like “Udge”.
The good thing is that you can choose to ignore the meme, reply to the interesting thought and continue the conversation. Then if you keep the conversation going, it could be made a thread if people are interested in it.
Also a honeypot for memes is helpful so people are less inclined to drop them in general channels
I've been noticing that the number of discussions on the internet have been going down lately. Although maybe it's just me using social media less? lol
Internet discourse is increasingly devolved into "agree with me or you deserve death"
A lot of people just want a constant dopamine hit, one after another, I love meme and shitposts, but reading a discussion about something interesting is definitely the best way to enjoy a cold evening in your blanket
Boobs
Well said
I commented a lot on reddit. Since switching over, there doesn't seem to be as much activity for me to bounce off from. I still chip in, but it's definitely not at the same level
I interact with it less and less each month. It's become a toxic hellhole that usually leaves me wondering why I still bother to try - even in the niche subs.
In some niche communities, its discussions stay valid like /c/radiology
This isn't wrong, but shitposts bring people who meme which brings people who discuss. Have to get a strong user base before strong discussions really kick off.
💩
Poo poo!
Lmao, the number of comments on this post is ironic. I've had some pretty fun conversations on lemmy.
Mastodon managed to just confuse the hell out of me before boring me. Take that with a grain of salt, though, because I was never on Twitter. It may be me, not the platform/concept.
I just recently tried Mastodon and I agree with you. It's confusing and I have yet to see anything or anyone worth "following".
Perfectly balanced.
It’s getting to be worse than Reddit here. Between the countless memes to scroll through and having your account banned for imaginary rule breaking because now that upvotes/downvotes don’t mean anything, people just report comments they don’t like and mods oblige…..
It's not like they meant anything before?
