Chase someone, and they're going to drive faster and stupider. It's swell that the cop finally backed off (or said so), but someone cops have been chasing might not immediately slow down and start driving less stupidly.
File an insurance claim, I guess. Trigger your on-board GPS. Install an anti-theft device. Each of the several people I've known who had their cars stolen got 'em back, operable and not totaled, so almost any strategy seems an improvement over a police chase.
