The only male doctor at my ob/gyn was visibly angry when I told him my experience getting the IUD. He said, "The women in this practice don't give anesthetic and it makes me furious with them." Way to be a decent human in a sea of assholes, dude.
- This is my experience too, ironically. Lmao. One woman I even chose for her compassionate care awards. I never saw her again. I still generally seek out women doctors for other things.
  
  My guess is that women who have had their pain dismissed for their entire lives fall into the trap of internalizing the dismissal.

  I hate upvoting this comment so much. My wife had some complications with pregnancy that doctors kept just choosing to ignore and sometimes flat out made negative comments about her weight. But when we try to find out "hey, this weight sticks around even when eating crazy healthy and walking 4 miles a day, what gives?" she still just gets blown off and told to eat less cake
- I just googled around a bit and there seem to be a lot of studies showing that the common medications don't do much/ arent worth it. Maybe that's why it wasn't recommended? There seems to be a lack of research into what even causes the pain and how to prevent it
  
  Then we need more studies starting 50 years ago at least. Regardless, placebo is a thing. We give pain meds all the time knowing they do next to nothing with minimal side effects, give the girls some oxy, or robaxin, or fentanyl. Those are the easiest drugs for me to ask a doctor to prescribe for pain, and having a 1 time dose in a doctor's office will not make you an addict.

I'm a man, and, it doesn't take a lot of study to know that pain is very different from emotional stress, especially when it involves GENITALS.
Since being seen by a neurologist for carpal tunnel, i have come to the conclusion that some doctors are just plain sadists. And I wonder if all this maltreatment of women came from some early docs that got together and went "y'know, we could cherry pick things here or there so we can get some good screams out of patients." It worked too well, and they decided to protect it through practice because it was too much fun.
But I know the reality is that medicine is just plain sexist, and historically women were just "less important." It's fucked up.

  A few years ago I was in therapy for my shoulder. A new guy started, and we were small talking. He mentions he hopes the economy doesn't become socialist, because then he won't make as much money being a docter when he's finished with school. We've completely lost the plot.

- I have cystic fibrosis so I’m a professional patient since birth. I don’t actually believe most doctors are sadist, maybe a good chunk of surgeons though… I think it’s more that med school is its own sort of brain washing, the worship of protocol and deep seated beliefs of the quality of their knowledge churns out doctors who have been through the ringer and can become self righteous because of it, it’s incredibly rigorous, you’re sleep deprived, you’re being fed knowledge for hours and hours a day… it makes you incredibly susceptible to accepting knowledge without question. A lot of them need to believe what their doing is humane, is correct, that thier knowledge is valid so it justifies their whatever is happening and their knowledge also already told them how much this hurts, they don’t get knowledge from patients just information.
  The way doctors are trained is a huge part of the problem, the way patient care is approached is just as bad, it goes back to academia as well, most studies do not include women in any capacity so their experiences are not reflected in the knowledge doctors do have. I think most doctors are normal people with good and bad traits and approach medicine in the way they were taught to, medicine as an institution simply does not value the experience of the patient, only the outcome of the treatment on the physical body, as if the mind, where pain happens to happen, is divorced from the body.

I sat in the room as my wife experienced the most brutal pain she has ever gone through. That woman has such a high pain tolerance that she scares me. And yet I felt sick just hearing her. The fact that they don’t anesthetize for this is criminal and fucking embarrassing as a society.
- Even just some novocaine does wonders. I'm due a new one and I keep putting it off. I've had 3. One they gave me (fairly useless) paracetamol. I had one without anything and one with novocaine. Ironically the latter was my first (15 years ago!!). They seem to have gotten worse each time.
  
  Paracetamol?! Not only would that be largely ineffective at preventing pain, it takes 30-60 minutes to start working. The incompetence astounds.

My wife came home from getting hers still in tears from the pain. I offered to go with, but the doctor made her believe it was nothing. Not content in simply hurting my wife, they set the string so it cut my fucking frenulum the next time we had sex! Took us nine months to find and book a competent gyno to fix her razor vag.
The worst part is my wife got the IUD because it was recommended by the gyno after she had a tubal ligation. It was not there to prevent pregnancy. They claimed it would make her period easier, the opposite was true. All that trauma and pain for nothing.
- Wtf?! My doctor suggested Endometrial Ablation and it was PHENOMENAL. Yeah, they put an electrical net inside of my uterus and burned the shit out of me, but it was a one time thing and it stopped my periods, PMDD, mood swings, and lessened the chance of my Endometriosis coming back. More women need to do this. I'm so so happy.

I wish I had received a realistic expectation when I went. Aside from vomiting in the parking lot after, I should have found someone to drive me. I had a very very hard time getting home and I shouldn’t have driven at all. I’m lucky I didn’t cause an accident.

Yes please cause FUCK the "women don't have pain receptors down there"... IUDs and Cervical Cancer cancer biopsies are the 3rd and 4th most painful experiences I've ever had.
#2 is spinal tap, #1 is a labiaplasty.. mine was medically necessary, but I want to scream at everyone who feels they need a labiaplasty to feel beautiful... 1 year of pain, 6 months without orgasms, so many complications, I screamed so loudly they had to sedate me again because I was TERRIFYING people in the hospital. It hurt so badly I thought death was preferable.

When I got mine in they gave me local anesthesia, and it was still the most painful experience of my life. Turns out rummaging around in your innards produces a type of pain unlike anything I've ever felt. I truly can't imagine how awful it must be without any anesthesia.
- I had my uterus inflated with saline for an ultrasound screening before an ablation. It wasn’t a lot of liquid, but it was an absolute screaming amount of pain, and they said it wouldn’t hurt.. I knew it would because I’ve had several iud insertions but they refused when I requested something, anything at all, for the pain..

Don't worry, taking cervical biopsy samples will still be full of pain - why would anyone need painkillers? There are no nerve endings, so there should be no pain

  I have people who Have documented nerve damage and can’t feel anything. I still numb them up, simply because we can have knockdown effects like vagus nerve stimulation even if they can’t consciously feel it. There’s still a response and, it doesn’t cost me much of anything to numb up an area just like normal.

My partner's IUD insertions both times have basically crippled her like the worst menstrual pain she's ever had. Thankfully the second time we had leftover vicodin from a wisdom tooth removal.
It's super fucked up to me that we have medicine that treats pain incredibly effectively but it's gatekept from us by a bunch of fucking nerds. Fuck the prescription drug system. If i want a real painkiller I should be able to go out and get some with no questions asked. If I get addicted then fuck me, i'm an adult, I know what I'm about, and it's not like they couldn't still restrict access i.e. only allow sale of X doses per week or whatever to help account for shit like that. There's no good reason to me to have to convince some fucking nerd that I'm in pain and it's really real and bad enough to need "real drugs" so that that nerd can graciously allow me relief (or just arbitrarily deny it if they feel like it)

My wife got one when we met. Watching her be in so much pain was horrible. She got it out as soon as possible. It took a few more years after that but I got a vasectomy and I couldn't possibly recommend it more highly.
