The solution is super simple... PAY THEM. You want volunteers that act like employees in your billion dollar IPO? Pony up the cash or GTFO.
They won't pay mods, because then they'd have more liability. It's all kinds of fucked.

And that new fresh faced moderators are suddenly being faced with a pile of trash and told to have at it, totally unequipped for what faces them?

The final straw on my reddit use was getting banned for a week, from some innocuous semi sarcastic comment I made. Had to reread it like 12 times to make sure that is what I got banned for. The mods are clearly overwhelmed. I almost want to make some burner accounts and go report a bunch of people, say some nasty stuff just to ad to the shit show. It's super obvious over there how much worse the mod situation is if you just read some comments.

The replies to their other posts asking for mods are pretty hilarious.
I am glad to see someone knowledgeable is likely to take over /r/canning. People can get sick or die if things are preserved incorrectly.
But didn’t you know unpaid labor, they’re suckers, “jannies” (as if doing a necessary service nobody else wants to do is insult-worthy instead of commendable), free labor they are so pathetic!11 I’m certainly not going to subject myself to being the first line of defense against trolls spamming NSFL of, so I’m grateful people are willing to do that to make a nice space for people like me. Not disdainful.
Nevermind some communities are like /r/canning where you probably want to avoid legitimately harmful disinformation. It’s definitely a person on a power trip who won’t abandon being a dirty jannie for a taste of power. Fucking bootlicker, living with the reality that people will continue to go to Reddit for information and continuing to remove disinformation instead of letting all the people who still oh my god, use Reddit get misinformed and die from bad preservation techniques. Why not just write a post about leaving and leave Reddit, then? Because a pinned post about where they left for is almost certainly going to be unpinned and deleted by a new moderator that Reddit installs. Also, if it’s unpinned but not deleted, not everyone is going to scroll back far enough to read “hey, we all left Reddit”. Yes, I know, double check your sources when your life could be at risk. Would still rather not be a bad source.
I just wish people could stop with the namecalling. Yes, powertripping mods exist. Not everyone who stayed on Reddit is an awful person.

Stuff like this is why some mods stayed in instead of going private. r/longhair stayed private instead of giving in and got their entire mod team removed. I respect their dedication but I think you can see why some people would want to stay on instead of getting removed: knowing they can avoid letting bad actors in as a consequence of getting replaced by someone who doesn’t care and will do nothing about users getting harassing PMs or comments, or actively wants to, say, turn r/longhair into a fetish community or some sub for a marginalized community into a place for porn of them.

You do not have a right to assemble on a privately owned platform, regardless of what the mods do.
They do if spez says they do, as you said - private platforms make their own rules

Pretty much guaranteed at this point. Only a true bootlicker would sign up for this work at this point. Or someone who just hasn't been paying attention for the last few months.
In the 2nd case they'd probably see reddit's true colours and run pretty early on though...
Sorry Spez, buggers can't be choosers. You have two options: volunteer mods with autonomy, or employees paid to do your bidding.
they can't pay people to do modding, because then they lose their safe harbour. They're basically fucked.
I don't think this is entirely accurate, as sites like Facebook and YouTube have had large mod teams on their payroll for years and still have safe harbor protections for user created content.
What I could see happening in this case, is safe harbor protections no longer applying to accounts with mod privileges, possibly even those who aren't being paid. If Reddit started paying mods, it could be reasonably argued that mod status constitutes an endorsement / publication by Reddit inc for anything a mod account posts. It would also give anyone working as a volunteer mod cause to sue for unpaid wages.
Sec. 230 of the CDA should protect them. The only thing they'd be liable for is paychecks which they really don't want to do.
They can gladly have a few from some communities on Lemmy back. Mod power tripping is unfortunately rearing it’s ugly head here (not this community specifically). Some absolutely shocking mods on some Lemmy.world communities.
