To be fair, this is probably one of those things that, like a lot of Catholic Church rituals, is steeped in pointless ceremony, like everyone needs to kneel and blink twice when the man with the censure enters the room, and look to the left if the censure is emitting visible smoke, but stand up and clasp their hands if it isn't. Or something like that.

Most of the ceremony here has a point and that's generally preventing the Holy Roman Emperor from fucking with the voting. It's really, really hard to commit Papal electoral fraud because of all the dumb shit.
Actually this is true for a lot of Catholic ritual with the caveat that the point is usually something like "dunking on Marcionites"
