It's crushing, isn't it?
3 years of college level French... 3 years, classes 4 days a week for 3/4 quarters a year. Visit France the year after graduating, and every. Single. Person. answers me in English. No matter how simple the comment.
People accuse Germans of being rude, but even as I was picking it up with no formal education, Germans would at least try and answer in German when I tried to speak it.
Consequently, I ended up speaking German fluently after 2 years, and still can't understand or be understood in French.
