UIUC is something like $30k/yr for in state students. They have a transfer agreement with a local community college for some degrees as do other state colleges. Other in state colleges are much cheaper. UIUC is mostly well off Chicago Suburbs kids. Their local schools are much better funded because school funding comes mostly from local property taxes. Counties south of Chicago have some of the highest property tax rates in the country, including Champaign where UIUC is located. Essentially the rest of the state is is subsidizing rich kids education while they prevent others from getting ahead. Making college free and changing to a progressive tax is a no brainer but the rich people keep voting against it.
Thanks for the insight. College should absolutely be free and I'm disappointed, but not surprised, that both of our main political parties continue to avoid making it happen.
